Humidity-Sensitive Properties of Self-Assembled Polyelectrolyte System
Lee Chil-Won,Kim Jong-Gyu,Gong Myoung-Seon The Polymer Society of Korea 2005 Macromolecular Research Vol.13 No.3
Polyelectrolyte membranes for humidity-sensing were fabricated using a layer-by-layer adsorption process based on the spontaneous self-assembly of alternating layers of cationic and anionic polymers on a silanized ITO patterned glass substrate. The substrate is dipped successively into dilute solutions of a polyanion and a polycation. The homopolymers and copoymers of diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DDA), allylamine hydrochloride (AA), 2-[(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethyl ammonium chloride (METAC) and vinylbenzyl tributyl phosphonium chloride(VTBPC) were used as the polycations. In this experiment, it was found that the resistance varied according to the chemical structure of the polycation. The resistance varied from $10^7$ to $10^5$ $\Omega$, as the humidity was increased from 60 (relative humidity) to $95\%$RH, which is the range of RH values required for a dew sensor operating at high humidity.

To find microorganisms producing esterase inhibitors, microbes were isolated from soil samples that were collected at different locations in Korea and screened for inhibitory activities. One of the inhibitor-producing strains was named strain DMC-498. This strain was found to be a new species of the genus Streptomyces by comparison with the characteristics of morphology and metabolisms of the other species of the genus.
Humidity Sensitivity of Hybrid Polyelectrolytes Prepared by the Sol-Gel Process
Lee Chil-Won,Park Hyung-Seok,Kim Jong-Gyu,Gong Myoung-Seon The Polymer Society of Korea 2005 Macromolecular Research Vol.13 No.2
Thin-film humidity sensors were prepared using inorganic/organic hybrid polyelectrolytes, which were prepared from the sol-gel reaction of copolymers of [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethylpropylammonium bromide (MEPAB), n-butyl methacrylate (BMA), and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TSPM) with tetraethyl ortho-silicate (TEOS). The humidity-sensitive polyelectrolytes were composed of the copolymers having the following mole ratios of MEPAB, BMA, and TSPM: 60/30/10, 55/30/15, and 50/30/20. We found that the impedance varied with the content of MEPAB or TEOS; it ranged from $10^{7} to 10^{3}\Omega$ between 20 and $95\%$ relative humidity, which is the range required for a humidity sensor operating at ambient humidity. In addition we investigated a number of characteristics of these humidity sensors, such as their hysteresis, response time, temperature dependence, frequency dependence, water durability, and long-term stability.

SC-E3 is a novel herbal formula composed of five oriental medicinal herbs that are used to treat a wide range of inflammatory diseases in Korean traditional medicine. In this study, we sought to determine the effects of SC-E3 on free radical generation and inflammatory response in lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) treated RAW 264.7 macrophages and the molecular mechanism involved. The ethanol extract of SC-E3 showed good free radical scavenging activity and inhibited LPS-induced reactive oxygen species generation. SC-E3 significantly inhibited the production of the LPS-induced inflammatory mediators, nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2, by suppressing the expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2, respectively. SC-E3 also prevented the secretion of the proinflammatory cytokines, IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6, and inhibited LPS-induced NF-κB activation and the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. Furthermore, SC-E3 induced the expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) by promoting the nuclear translocation and transactivation of Nrf2. Taken together, these results suggest that SC-E3 has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and that these effects are due to the inhibitions of NF-κB and MAPK and the induction of Nrf2-mediated HO-1 expression in macrophages. These findings provide scientific evidence supporting the potential use of SC-E3 for the treatment and prevention of various inflammatory diseases.

Cathodic shift and improved photocurrent performance of cost-effective Fe2O3 photoanodes

We successfully fabricated cost-effective and efficient pulse electrodeposited Fe2O3 photoanodes for PEC water splitting application. Surface modifications of Fe2O3 by oxygen evolution catalysts like cobalt phosphate (Co-Pi), a monoclinic BiVO4 or both showed cathodic/anodic shift in photocurrent with significantly improved photo-response. Dependence of lasing threshold on Q factor in a deformed microcavity laser.
Lee, Ji-Won,Yu, Hyeon-Hye,Yi, Chang-Hwan,Kim, Chil-Min Optical Society of America 2014 Optics letters Vol.39 No.9

The relationship between lasing threshold and quality (Q) factor is investigated. When a deformed microcavity laser composed of a circular arc and an isosceles trapezoid is excited by current injection, various modes lase in ten emission directions. The lasing modes are classified into four groups, and the lasing threshold of each mode group is obtained according to emission spectra. The Q factor of each mode group is obtained from the resonance by comparing the far-field patterns of resonances with those of mode groups. Through the study, we find that the lasing threshold strongly depends on the Q factor.

The structure–property relationship of pyridoindole-type host materials for blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs) was investigated by synthesizing three pyridoindole derivatives modified with dibenzofuran, dibenzothiophene, and 9-phenylcarbazole. The 9-phenylcarbazole moiety was better than dibenzofuran or dibenzothiophene to manage the energy levels and charge-transport properties of the pyridoindole-derived host materials. The PCb-PCz host with the 9-phenylcarbazole moiety showed balanced charge density in the emitting layer and exhibited a high external quantum efficiency of 29.7% in blue PHOLEDs.

Graphic Abstract
