        Experimental Study on Interfacial Shear Performance of RC Beams Added to Existing RC Columns

        The primary objectives of this study were to experimentally investigate the shear characteristicsof the interface between an existing RC column and a reinforced concrete (RC) beam added to the existing RC column, and to propose a formula for estimating the shear capacity of the beam-column interface. The major test variables consisted of concrete strength, added steel reinforcement ratio and shear span to depth ratio. Failure characteristics, displacements at the loading point, slips of the beam-column interface, and shear capacities of the beam-column interface were analyzed. Test results indicate that both the shear capacity of the beam-column interface and the corresponding interfacial slip increased with a decrease in shear span to depth ratio. In addition, as concrete strength grew, the shear capacity of the beam-column interface increased, but the interfacial slip corresponding to the interfacial shear capacity remained almost unchanged. Moreover, both the shear capacity of the beam-column interface and the corresponding interfacial slip increased with an increase in the longitudinal steel reinforcement ratio of the added RC beam. A formula for predicting the shear capacity of the beam-column interface was developed. The test results validate the proposed formula and provide important guidance for the design of the RC beam added to the existing RC column.

        Standardizing and optimizing acupuncture treatment for irritable bowel syndrome: A Delphi expert consensus study

        Background: Acupuncture has been widely utilized for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, heterogeneity is large among therapeutic strategies and protocols. The aim of this study was to propose some down-to-earth recommendations and establish an optimized protocol for acupuncture practice in IBS. Methods: A panel of 74 traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) acupuncturists participated in clinical issue investigation. Subsequently, systematic reviews concerning acupuncture for IBS were screened within 3 databases. An initial consensus questionnaire was formed from the results of clinical issue investigation and literature review. Ultimately, a Delphi vote was carried out to determine these issues. 30 authoritative experts with extensive experience were requested to respond with agreement, neutrality, or disagreement for the items. Consensus achievement on a given item was defined as greater than 80% agreement. Results: Following a 2-round Delphi survey, there were 19 items reaching consensus; of which 5 items (26.32%) achieved thorough consensus, and significant agreement was reached for the other 14 items. These items can be classified into the 3 major domains: 1) clinical outcomes that acupuncture can bring for favorable intervention population (5 items), 2) suitable therapeutic principles and parameters of acupuncture (13 items), 3) possible adverse events in the treatment (1 item). Conclusion: Without any ready-made guidelines and lacking of homogeneity in the published literatures, such expert consensus could be valuable for TCM acupuncturists in daily practice and patients with IBS to obtain appropriate and standardized acupuncture treatment. In addition, it also points out the clinical focus which need to be further explored in future trials.

        Geophysical methods for the investigation of a closed dumping ground

        Reclamation of closed dumping grounds is a potential solution to solve land scarce problems. Traditional geotechnical investigations of closed dumping grounds face some problems, such as the emission of hazardous liquids and gases, and the lack of ground information due to the discontinuity between two boreholes. Thus, noninvasive and continuous investigation methods are needed to supplement traditional geotechnical investigations. In this paper, two types of geophysical investigation methods, Seismic Analysis of Surface Waves (SASW) and 2D Resistivity, were carried out to study noninvasive and continuous site investigations for dumping grounds. The two geophysical methods are able to profile the distribution of physical properties of the fill and original materials, by which the extent of the dumping ground can be found and some anomalies in the subsurface can be located. Boreholes were used to assist in locating the dumping material-ground interfaces. The results show that dumping material-ground interfaces obtained from the two geophysical methods are roughly consistent. Moreover, attempt is made in the paper to use the geophysical methods to classify the types of dumping materials. The results show that the classification of dumping materials using the geophysical methods follows the results of the manual sorting of the dumping materials from a borehole.

        Robotic assisted adrenalectomy: Is it ready for prime time?

        Adrenal surgery is undergoing continuous evolution and minimally invasive surgery is increasingly being used for the surgical management of adrenal masses. With robotic-assisted surgery being a widely accepted surgical treatment for many urological conditions such as prostate carcinoma and renal cell carcinoma, the use of the robot has been expanded to include robotic-assisted adrenalectomy, offering an alternative minimally invasive platform for adrenal surgery. We performed a literature review on robotic-assisted adrenalectomy, reviewing the current surgical techniques and perioperative outcomes.

        Molecular cloning of the duck MEF2C gene cDNA coding domain sequence and its expression during fetal muscle tissue development

        Myogenic enhancer transcription factor 2c (MEF2c), one of the members of the MEF2 family of transcription factors, plays an important role in mammalian muscle development. However, the role of MEF2c in avian muscle development still remains unclear. To understand the function of MEF2c in avian muscle development, we first cloned the duck MEF2c coding domain sequence (CDS) and analyzed MEF2c expression in duck muscle tissues of embryos from 10 days of incubation to 1 week after birth using real-time PCR technology. The results showed that the duck MEF2c CDS consists of 1,398nucleotides that encode 465 amino acids. The MEF2c duck protein contains a MADS domain, a MEF2 domain and a HJURP_C domain with high homology to related proteins in other organisms. Different expression levels of MEF2c were found in skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscle. Therefore, these results indicated that duck MEF2c has two conserved domains (a MADS and a MEF2 domain), is an indispensable regulator of muscle development, and plays an important role in the development of duck muscle.

        OsMSR15 encoding a rice C2H2-type zinc finger protein confers enhanced drought tolerance in transgenic Arabidopsis

        Zinc nger proteins (ZFPs) play important roles in plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. Through microarray analysis, an Oryza sativa L. multi-stress-responsive gene, OsMSR15, was identied and subsequently cloned from rice Pei’ai 64S (Oryza sativa L.). Expression of OsMSR15 was strongly up-regulated by cold, drought and heat stresses in different tissues at different developmental stages of rice. OsMSR15 contains two C2H2-type zinc nger motifs, a nuclear localization signal (B box), a Leu-rich domain (L-box) and a conserved EAR-motif close to its C-terminus. The OsMSR15-GFP fusion protein was localized to the nucleus. Yeast-one hybrid assay showed that OsMSR15 possesses transcriptional activation ability. Expression of OsMSR15 in Arabidopsis conferred drought tolerance, and transgenic plants showed hypersensitivity to exogenous ABA during the seed germination and post-germination stages. Transgenic plants also showed higher levels of free proline, less electrolyte leakage and increased expressions of a number of stress-responsive genes, including LEA3, RD29A, DREB1A and P5CS1 under drought stress. The obtained results indicate that OsMSR15 is an important regulator involved in plant response to drought stress.

        천진 ‘니런장’ 전통 복 문화 인물 캐릭터의 시각적 분석

        중국 전통 복(福) 문화는 중국의 수천 년 역사 문명과 더불어 긴 역사를 가진다. 복 문화는 중국의 민속문화에서 유래한 것으로 내용이 풍부하고 의미가 아름다우며, 사람들의 삶에 대한 열망과 미래에 대한 염원을 담고 있다. 현재 중국에 현존하는 채색 조각 공예품은 많지 않다. 천진의 ‘니런장(泥人张)’은 채색 조각 공예 공법을 전승해 온 대표적인 공예품 중의 하나로 180년 이상의 역사를 가진다. 본 논문에서는 천진 ‘니런장(泥人张)’ 채색 조각 작품 중 복(福) 문화 주제의 창작을 하나의 작품으로 분류하고. 전통 복 문화에서 ‘오복(五福)’에 따라 복문화 작품을 다섯 종류로 나눠 시각 기호학적 관점으로 분석한다. 분석을 통해 천진 ‘니런장(泥人张)’ 수공예가 특징을 정리 분석하여 중국 전통공예 발전에 적합한 길을 모색하고자 한다. 중요한 문화 형태인 복(福) 문화의 시각적 분석을 통해 현대인의 복(福) 문화에 대한 욕구를 이해하고, 캐릭터 디자인에 응용하고자 한다. 전통문화 디자이너들은 전통 공예품을 계승 발전시킬 때 중국 전통 복(福) 문화의 중요한 역할을 충분히 인지하고 그것을 디자인에 충분히 적용해야 한다. 현대인에 맞는 미적 감각과 디자인 요소를 결합하여 전통적인 복(福) 문화 의미의 역할을 수행해야 한다. 천진(天津) ‘니런장(泥人张)’의 전통 복(福) 인물 캐릭터 문화 운용에 대한 시각적 분석은 신세대 중국 전통 수공예를 위한 객관적이고 합리적인 새로운 방법이 될 것이다. Chinese traditional color sculpture technology has a history of thousands of years. Up to now, there are few existing color sculpture technologies in China. Tianjin “clay figurine Zhang” color sculpture is one of the representatives of color sculpture technology inheritance. At present, it has a history of more than 180 years. Chinese traditional blessing culture has a history of thousands of years. Because it expresses beautiful significance, it has been loved by people since ancient times. Among China’s traditional handicrafts works, many works are created with traditional culture and folk culture as materials, and take the traditional Fu culture as the main creative basis, expressing people’s longing for a better life and hope for a better future. Taking the color sculpture works of “clay figurine Zhang” in Tianjin as an example, this paper gives an example of the typical cases of traditional Fu culture in the color sculpture works of “clay figurine Zhang”, and analyzes the specific application of traditional Fu culture elements in the color sculpture works of “clay figurine Zhang” from the perspective of persona vision. Thus, we can further understand the reasons for the inheritance and development of Tianjin “clay figurine Zhang” color sculpture, and explore a road suitable for the development of Chinese traditional handicrafts.

      • Neurotrophic Artemin Promotes Motility and Invasiveness of MIA PaCa-2 Pancreatic Cancer Cells

        Objective: To analyze the capacity of neurotrophic artemin to promote the motility and invasiveness of MIA PaCa-2 pancreatic cancer cells. Methods: MIA PaCa-2 was cultured in vitro and studied using transwell chambers for motility and invasiveness on treatment with different concentrations of aArtemin or its receptor $GFR{\alpha}3$ were also determined. Expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and epithelial cadherin (E-cadherin) was quantified using RT-PCR and Western blotting. Results: MIA PaCa-2 pancreatic cancer cell motility and invasiveness was significantly increased with artemin and its receptor $GFR{\alpha}3$ with dose dependence (P<0.01). MMP-2 production was also significantly increased (t = 6.35, t = 7.32), while E-cadherin was significantly lowered (t = 4.27, t = 5.61) (P <0.01). Conclusion: Artemin and its receptor $GFR{\alpha}3$ can promote pancreatic cancer cell motility and invasiveness and contribute to aggressive behavior. The mechanism may be related to increased expression of MMP-2 molecule and down-regulation of E-cadherin expression.
