Exploring the Factors Influencing Student Engagement in University English Classes

        Xiaohui Zhang,Hyun-Ju Kim 한국영어교육학회 2024 ENGLISH TEACHING(영어교육) Vol.79 No.1

This study investigated student engagement by conceptualizing learning engagement and examining the inner mechanism that operates in the university English learning context. This study administered a questionnaire to 376 college students, and data analysis was conducted with SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 24.0. The findings revealed that student engagement can be conceptualized into behavioral, cognitive, affective, and interactive engagement. The results confirmed that cognitive engagement positively affected behavioral engagement, whereas affective engagement did not. Affective engagement had positive effects on both cognitive engagement and interactive engagement. Interactive engagement positively affected cognitive engagement but did not affect behavioral engagement. Further, the results showed that cognitive engagement acted as a full mediator between affective engagement and behavioral engagement, as well as between interactional engagement and behavioral engagement. The findings of this study propose implications for optimizing English teaching to facilitate student engagement and ultimately enhancing their learning satisfaction along with improving academic outcomes.

Compressive Properties of High-distance Warp-knitted Spacer Flexible Composite

        Xiaohui Zhang,Yuanyuan Yu,Andrews Boakye,Pibo Ma 한국섬유공학회 2018 Fibers and polymers Vol.19 No.5

This paper mainly introduces a high-distance warp-knitted spacer flexible composite material which is a special material consisting of high-distance warp-knitted spacer fabric and some coating materials. It introduces the designing process as well as the preparation of high-distance warp-knitted flexible composite material. In order to comprehend the influence of internal pressure on the material, the mechanical properties under 100 %, 80 % and 60 % gas pressure have been explored. A compression test under these three kinds of gas pressure was carried out and the related force displacement diagram, the stress-strain curve and the energy strain curve which directly reflects the variation of the mechanical properties of the composites material under the different gas pressure were obtained and presented. A deep investigation and analysis was conducted into knowing the compressive properties of the material and how they are affected by the gas pressure. The experimental results obtained shows that the compressive properties of the high-distance warp-knitted space flexible material is dependent on the amount of gas inserted. Again the compressive strength of the material keeps growing stronger with an increase in the intensity of the gas pressure.

Exploring Factors of English Teachers' Effective Teaching Behavior in Blended Learning Contexts

        Xiaohui Zhang,김현주 한국영어평가학회 2023 영어평가 Vol.18 No.1

This study aims to investigate effective teaching behavior (ETB) for undergraduate students among college teachers in China and to analyze their perceptions of ETB that contribute to academic success. In this study, a questionnaire was used with 152 college students as participants, and data analysis was conducted using SPSS ver. 23, including t-test, ANOVA, and factor analysis. The results revealed that teachers’ perception of ETB in blended learning (BL) contexts consists of four dimensions: classroom teaching organization, online learning management, diversified assessment, and individualized instruction. Among these dimensions, classroom teaching organization was perceived as the most effective, followed by online management, while diversified assessment and individualized teaching were considered less effective in implementing ETB in teaching practice. Furthermore, the study identified two categories of factors affecting ETB: internal factors of teachers (beliefs, capacity, and motivations) and external factors (online platforms, institutional environment, and students’ performance). The research findings suggest that the online platform factor and environment factor have the highest correlation coefficient with ETB, while the teacher factor has the lowest. Based on the findings, the study proposes implications and suggestions, such as building online resources and enhancing the multifaceted roles of instructors in BL contexts, to optimize teaching practices in higher education and enhance students’ satisfaction and academic achievement.

Effects of confinement on physiological and psychological responses and expression of interleukin 6 and brain derived neurotrophic factor mRNA in primiparous and multiparous weaning sows

        Zhang, Mingyue,Li, Xiang,Li, Jianhong,Sun, Hanqing,Zhang, Xiaohui,Bao, Jun Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2017 Animal Bioscience Vol.30 No.9

Objective: The present study aimed to investigate whether the long-lasting, recurrent restricting of sows leads to the physiological and psychological reaction of discomfort. Methods: Sows (Large White) that had experienced restricting for about 0.5 or 3 years and agematched sows kept in a group housing system (loose sows) were compared. Pupillary light reflex parameters were measured at the weaning stage. Immediately after slaughter, blood samples were taken to measure serum cortisol levels, and the brain was dissected, gene expression in the hippo-campus, frontal cortex and hypothalamus was analyzed. Results: The serum cortisol levels were higher in the confined sows than in the loose sows. The full maturity, but not the young adolescent, confined sows had longer latency time in the onset of pupil constriction than their loose counterparts. Real-time polymerase chain reaction analyses revealed an increased expression of interleukin 6 mRNA in the hippocampus and decreased expression of brain derived neurotrophic factor mRNA in hippocampus and hypothalamus and to a lesser extent in the frontal cortex of the full maturity confined sows, compared with the full maturity loose sows. Conclusion: Taken together, these data indicated that recurrent restricting stress in full maturity sows leads to the physiological and psychological reaction of discomfort.

Porcine parvovirus nonstructural protein NS1 activates NF-κB and it involves TLR2 signaling pathway

        Xiaohui Jin,Yixin Yuan,Chi Zhang,Yong Zhou,Yue Song,Zhanyong Wei,Gaiping Zhang 대한수의학회 2020 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.21 No.3

Background: Porcine parvovirus (PPV) is a single-stranded DNA virus that causes porcine reproductive failure. It is of critical importance to study PPV pathogenesis for the prevention and control of the disease. NS1, a PPV non-structural protein, is participated in viral DNA replication, transcriptional regulation, and cytotoxicity. Our previous research showed that PPV can activate nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway and then up-regulate the expression of interleukin (IL)-6. Objectives: Herein, the purpose of this study is to determine whether the non-structural protein NS1 of PPV also has the same function. Methods: Real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, western blot, immunofluorescence assay and small interfering RNA (siRNA) were used. Results: Our findings demonstrated that PPV NS1 protein can up-regulate the expression levels of IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, PPV NS1 protein was found to induce the phosphorylation of IκBα, then leading to the phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of NF-κB. In addition, the NS1 protein activated the upstream pathways of NF-κB. Meanwhile, TLR2-siRNA assay showed TLR2 plays an important role in the activation of NF-κB signaling pathway induced by PPV-NS1. Conclusions: These findings indicated that PPV NS1 protein induced the up-regulated of IL-6 expression through activating the TLR2 and NF-κB signaling pathways. In conclusion, these findings provide a new avenue to study the innate immune mechanism of PPV infection.

Renal surface reconstruction and segmentation for image‑guided surgical navigation of laparoscopic partial nephrectomy

        Xiaohui Zhang,Xuquan Ji,Junchen Wang,Yubo Fan,Chunjing Tao 대한의용생체공학회 2023 Biomedical Engineering Letters (BMEL) Vol.13 No.2

real-time for laparoscopic image-guided navigation. The stereo vision method for intraoperative tissue 3D reconstructionhas the most potential for clinical development benefiting from its high reconstruction accuracy and laparoscopy compatibility. However, existing stereo vision methods have difficulty in achieving high reconstruction accuracy in real time. Also, intraoperative tissue reconstruction results often contain complex background and instrument information that preventsclinical development for image-guided systems. Taking laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) as the research object, thispaper realizes a real-time dense reconstruction and extraction of the kidney tissue surface. The central symmetrical Censusbased semi-global block stereo matching algorithm is proposed to generate a dense disparity map. A GPU-based pixel-bypixelconnectivity segmentation mechanism is designed to segment the renal tissue area. An in-vitro porcine heart, in-vivoporcine kidney and offline clinical LPN data were performed to evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of our approach. The algorithm achieved a reconstruction accuracy of ± 2 mm with a real-time update rate of 21 fps for an HD image size of960 × 540, and 91.0% target tissue segmentation accuracy even with surgical instrument occlusions. Experimental resultshave demonstrated that the proposed method could accurately reconstruct and extract renal surface in real-time in LPN. Themeasurement results can be used directly for image-guided systems. Our method provides a new way to measure geometricinformation of target tissue intraoperatively in laparoscopy surgery.
