The potential role of YAP in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

The transcriptional cofactor YAP and its inhibitory regulators, Hippo kinases and adapter proteins, constitute an evolutionarily conserved signaling pathway that controls organ size and cell fate. The activity of the Hippo-YAP pathway is determined by a variety of intracellular and intercellular cues, such as cell polarity, junctions, density, mechanical stress, energy status, and growth factor signaling. Recent studies have demonstrated that YAP can induce the expression of a set of genes that allow cancer cells to gain a survival advantage and aggressive behavior. Comprehensive genomic studies have revealed frequent focal amplifications of the YAP locus in human carcinomas, including head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Moreover, FAT1, which encodes an upstream component of Hippo signaling, is one of the most commonly altered genes in HNSCC. In this review, we discuss the causes and functional consequences of YAP dysregulation in HNSCC. We also address interactions between YAP and other oncogenic drivers of HNSCC.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry(MALDI-TOF MS) is one of the powerful methods that enable analysis of small molecules as well as large molecules up to about 500,000 Da without severe fragmentation. MALDI-TOF MS, thus, has been a very useful an analytical tool for the confirmation of synthetic molecules, probing PTMs, and identifying structures of a given protein. In recent nuclear medicine, MALDI-TOF MS liner ion mode helps researcher calculate the average number of chelator(or linkage) per an antibody conjugate, such as DOTA-(or DFO-) trastuzumab for labeling a medical radioisotope. This simple technique can be utilized to improve the labeling method and control the quality at the development of antibody-based radiopharmaceuticals, which is very effected to diagnosis and therapy for in vivo tumor cells, with radioisotopes like $^{89}Zr$, $^{64}Cu$, and 177Lu. To minimize the error, MALDI-TOF MS measurement is repeatedly performed for each sample in this study, and external calibration is carried out after data collection.
Quantitative Analyses of the Functional Constituents in SanYangSam and SanYangSanSam

Objective: SanYangSam and SanYangSanSam are traditional Korea-medical herbs that are grown from Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer. In our previous studies, we found that the functional compounds in SanYangSam and SanYangSanSam were different and depended on the type and the cultivation environment of ginseng. This study aimed to profile the functional constituents in SanYangSam and SanYangSanSam. Methods: To profile the functional aspects of the many compounds that have therapeutic activities in SanYangSam and SanYangSanSam extracts, we used liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry and quadrupole orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Results: A total of four major compounds were detected; two of which were the natural flavonoids kaempferol and quercetin. Among others, two polyacetylene compounds, including panaxydol and panaxynol, were detected. Conclusion: In this study, we found that panaxydol, one of the polyacetylene constituents of ginseng, is a candidate anti-cancer agent in SanYangSam and SanYangSanSam pharmacopuncture. In addition, we found that the panaxydol levels in the SanYangSanSam extract were over 30 times those in the SanYangSam extract.

Customers have used various skin care and functional cosmetics to prevent their skin aging as well as improve current condition of the skin. It is important to analyzing and understanding their skin to select optimized skin care solutions. The aim of this study is to quantitatively analyze the effect of environment, lifestyle, and innate genes on the current skin condition. For this purpose, degree of hydration, sebum, wrinkles, melanin, dullness and redness in a highly controlled condition were collected in conjunction with a questionnaire survey analyzing their lifestyles and genetic data from about 3000 women. We classified participants based on the types of skin, using 6 kinds of index representing skin properties, questionnaire survey on lifestyle and genetic data with Gaussian Mixture Model and Decision Tree for classification model. Through this study, it was possible to divide the skin of Korean women into 12 clusters according to wrinkles, melanin, redness, dullness and oil/moisture balance with Gaussian Mixture Model. Also, we were able to identify a pattern in which each factor was correlated. Next, we tried to discover factors for predicting skin condition changes through correlation analysis with lifestyle, climate/environment, and innate genes that affect the current skin condition. Ultimate purpose of this study is to predict future skin condition using big data and AI technology. This knowledge will enable us to provide more proactive and personalized solutions not only for cosmetics but also for life care such as lifestyle, eating habits, and environmental response.

Purpose: To investigate the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency electrocautery for conjunctival diseases combined with dry eye syndrome. Methods: Twenty eyes of 16 patients with conjunctival diseases underwent the high frequency electrocautery for conjunctival diseases. Conjunctival evaluation, tear break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer tear production test, ocular surface disease index (OSDI) and visual analogue pain score (VAS) were performed preoperatively, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgery. Results: Mean age was 53.9 ± 19.4 years. There were 2 males and 14 females. Nine eyes with conjunctivochalasis, 6 eyes with chemosis, 1 eye with conjunctival inclusion cyst, 2 eyes with conjunctival nevi and 2 eyes with lymphangiectasis were included. Conjunctival diseases were improved and no severe complication occurred. TBUT increased and OSDI decreased 3 months after surgery. There were no difference in Schirmer test and VAS. Conclusions: High frequency electrocautery is an effective, safe and simple treatment for conjunctival diseases combined with dry eye syndrome.

해양수산업의 미래 경쟁력을 좌우할 수 있는 4차 산업혁명 기술로서 사물인터넷은 개발 속도가 가속화되고 있으며, 이에 따른 해양/수중 IoT의 표준화에 대한 요구가 대두되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 공식표준으로서 국내 TTA 및 국제 ISO/IEC JTC 1에서 활발히 논의되고 있는 해양/수중 IoT 표준화 현황을 제시하고, 향후 표준개발 방향 및 전문가로서의 활동 방향을 예측해 본다.
