        A Kinetic Study of the Fe(Ⅲ)-Catalyzed Aquation of Bis(malonato)Diaquochromate(Ⅲ) Ion

        The bis(malonato)diaquochromate(III) ion, $Cr(C_3H_2O_4)_2^-$ in acidic solution hydrolyzes to give $Cr(C_3H_2O_4)^{+}.$ This reaction is catalyzed by ferric ion and the rate law for this cation catalyzed-aquation in a $HClO_4/NaClO_4$ medium, $I = 1.00 M, is-d[Cr(C_3H_2O_4)_2^-]/dt = ({\kappa}_1[Fe^{3+}] + {\kappa}_2[H^+])[Cr(C_3H_2O_4)_2^-]$ where ${\kappa}_1(25^{\circ}C) = 4.72×10^{-5} M^{-1}sec^{-1} ({\Delta}H^{\neq} = 22.5 Kcal/mol, {\Delta}S^{\neq} = - 2.58 eu) and {\kappa}_2(25^{\circ}C) = 4.75{\times}10^{-5} M^{-1}sec^{-1} ({\Delta}H^{\neq} = 21.2 Kcal/mol, {\Delta}S^{\neq} = - 7.13 eu).$ Rapid preequilibrium association of basic Cr-bound oxygen with $Fe^{3+},$ followed by rate-determining ring opening, is proposed to account for the ${\kappa}_1,$ hydrolysis pathway.

        Gecko Proteins Exert Anti-Tumor Effect against Cervical Cancer Cells Via PI3-Kinase/Akt Pathway

        Anti-tumor activity of the proteins from Gecko (GP) on cervical cancer cells, and its signaling mechanisms were assessed by viable cell counting, propidium iodide (PI) staining, and Western blot analysis. GP induced the cell death of HeLa cells in a dose-dependent manner while it did not affect the viability of normal cells. Western blot analysis showed that GP decreased the activation of Akt, and co-administration of GP and Akt inhibitors synergistically exerted anti-tumor activities on HeLa cells, suggesting the involvement of PI3-kinase/Akt pathway in GP-induced cell death of the cancer cells. Indeed, the cytotoxic effect of GP against HeLa cells was inhibited by overexpression of constituvely active form of Akt in HeLa cells. The candidates of the functional proteins in GP were analyzed by Mass-spectrum. Taken together, our results suggest that GP elicits anti-tumor activity against HeLa cells by inhibition of PI3-kinase/Akt pathway.

        청소년기의 자의식 및 체중조절행동과 의복행동과의 관련연구

        The purpose of this study were 1) to identify the effects of age and sex of Korean adolescents on the psychological variables(body attitudes, public/private self-consciousness, self-esteem), weight control practices, and clothing behaviors, and 2) to identify the relationships between psychological variables and weight control practices, and the effects of the variables on clothing behaviors in the adolescent' groups classified by sex and age. The results of this study were as follows: 1) Two factors of body attitudes were identified: Body-shape consciousness and Physical attractiveness. Four factors of clothing attitudes were identified: Clothing interest/dressing for others, Clothing exhibition, Dressing for self, and Psychological clothing-dependence. 2) There were significant effects of sex on all of the research variables. Age was found to have effects on Physical attractiveness, self-esteem, public/private self-consciousness, Clothing exhibition, and Psychological clothing-dependence. 3) In the relationships between psychological variables and weight control practices, Body-shape consciousness was negatively correlated with Physical attractiveness in all groups. Also, Body-shape consciousness had effects on weight control practice in all subject groups. 4) Public self-consciousness had direct/indirect effects on the Clothing interest/dressing for others in all subject groups. Private self-consciousness had direct/ indirect effects on dressing for self in high school boys and girls. Body-shape consciousness had indirect effects on Preference for up-to date style in male college students group, whereas weight control practices had effects on the Preference for up-to date style in female college students group. Self-esteem was found to have the effects on clothing behavior in college students groups. Among clothing attitude factors, Clothing exhibition had distinct Vol. 21, No.8, (1997) effect on the Preference for up-to date style in all subject groups, and Clothing interest/dressing for others had effects on Clothing exhibition and Psychological clothing-dependence in high school boys and girls.

        Clinical outcomes of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding according to the risk indicated by Glasgow-Blatchford risk score-computed tomography score in the emergency room

        Background/Aims: Acute upper gastrointestinal (UGI) bleeding is a significant emergency situation with a mortality rate of 2% to 10%. Therefore, initial risk stratification is important for proper management. We aimed to evaluate the role of contrast- enhanced multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) for risk stratification in patients with acute UGI bleeding in the emergency room (ER). Methods: This retrospective study included patients with UGI bleeding in the ER. Glasgow-Blatchford risk score-computed tomography (GBS-CT) was assessed using a combination of GBS and the MDCT scan scoring system. Results: Of the 297 patients with UGI bleeding, 124 (41.8%) underwent abdominal MDCT. Among them, 90.3% were classified as high-risk by GBS, and five patients died (4.0%). Rebleeding occurred in nine patients (7.3%). The high-risk GBS-CT group had significantly higher in-hospital mortality (10.5% in high-risk vs. 1.4% in moderate risk vs. 0% in low-risk, p = 0.049), transfusion amount (p < 0.001), and endoscopic hemostasis (p < 0.001) compared to the moderate- and low-risk groups. Conclusions: Adding MDCT scans to the existing validated prognosis model when predicting the risk of UGI bleeding in patients in the ER plays a significant role in determining in-hospital mortality, transfusions, and the need for endoscopic hemostasis.

        Rasch 모형을 통한 대학생의 이문화 적응 태도 분석

        The objective of this study was to investigate Korean college students` perceptions and attitudes about coping with hypothetical multi-cultural situations, applying the Rasch measurement modeling. A secondary objective was to examine the construct validity and reliability of the instrument developed for measuring cross-cultural adaptability. A sample of 120 undergraduate students at a large university was asked to respond to the 20 item Likert-type questionnaire concerning their perceptions of possible steps they would take, given the hypothetical multi-cultural situations. The results showed the instrument measured the construct of cross-cultural adaptability with 4 subscales: respect and attention for different cultures, positive acceptance of some aspects of foreign cultures, objective recognition of one`s attitudes towards foreign cultures, and empathy towards foreign cultures. In particular, the results indicated that the subjects needed to be more self-aware of various multi-cultural aspects and more empathetic to multi-culturalism beyond their baseline respect and interest in multi-culturalism. The principal implication of this study is that educational institutions including Korean colleges should provide educational programs to help college students shift from basic levels of simple understanding of multi-culturalism to higher levels of multi-cultural empathy.

        대장 선종과 대장암에서 MMP-2, HIF-1α 및 VEGF의 발현

        목적: 대장암 발생 과정 중 초기 기저막 파괴에 관여하는 MMP-2와 신생혈관 형성에 관여하는 HIF-1α와 VEGF가 대장암 발생 및 각 진행단계에서 발현하는 양상 및 예후 관련 인자와의 연관성을 알아보고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법: 대장선종 32예, 조기 대장암 11예와 진행 대장암 36례의 대장내시경 생검 조직에서 MMP-2, HIF-1α와 VEGF의 mRNA 발현을 역전사 중합효소 연쇄반응을 이용하여 주변의 정상 조직을 기준으로 반정량적으로 측정하였으며, 이 중 암 수술 조직 11예에서 gelatin zymography와 Western blot을 이용하여 활성형 MMP-2 단백과 HIF-1α 단백 발현을 관찰하였다. 결과: MMP-2 mRNA 발현은 대장 선종에 비해 진행 대장암에서 증가하였고(p<0.001), 대장 선종에서 조기 대장암과 진행 대장암으로 갈수록 증가하였다(p<0.05). 대장암에서 MMP-2 mRNA 발현은 림프관 침습이 있는 경우와 중등도와 저분화도일 때 및 병기가 진행함에 따라 증가하였다(p<0.05). Gelatin zymography 결과, 11예 중 10예(91%)의 암조직에서 활성형 MMP-2 단백이 발현되었다. HIF-1α와 VEGF mRNA 발현은 대장 선종에 비해 조기 대장암과 진행 대장암에서 증가하였으나(p<0.05; p<0.001), 조기 대장암과 진행성 대장암 사이에 차이가 없었다. Western blot 결과, 11예 중 9예(82%)의 암조직에서 HIF-1α 단백이 발현되었다. HIF-1α mRNA 발현은 MMP-2 mRNA 및 VEGF mRNA 발현과 유의한 상관관계가 있었다(r=0.52, p< 0.001; r=0.76, p<0.001). 결론: 이번 연구는 대장암 발생 및 진행에 있어서 MMP-2, HIF-1α와 VEGF의 발현 및 상호 연관성을 확인할 수 있었으며, 이들 인자들의 발현이 대장 내 신생물의 악성화 단계 및 악성 병변의 진행을 예측할 수 있는 한 방법이 될 수 있을 것으로 생각한다. Background/Aims: This study was aimed to investigate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in colonic adenoma-carcinoma sequence. Methods: Thirty-two tissue samples of colon adenoma, 11 of early colon cancer and 36 of advanced colon cancer were collected by colonoscopic biopsy. Normal colonic tissues were also collected from the same subjects. The mRNA expression levels of MMP-2, HIF-1α, and VEGF were quantitated using semiquantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reactions. The protein expressions of activated MMP-2 and HIF-1α were examined by gelatin zymography and by Western blot in surgically resected cases, respectively. Results: The expression level of MMP-2 mRNA showed a progressive increase in the advance of the colorectal adenoma-carcinoma sequence (p<0.05). In colon cancer tissues, the expression level of MMP-2 mRNA showed an increasing trend according to differentiation, lymphatic invasion and Dukes` stage (p<0.05). The protein expression of activated MMP-2 was observed in 10 of 11 (91%) cases of cancer tissues. The mRNA expression levels of HIF-1α and VEGF were greater in tissues of early and advanced colon cancer compared with colon adenoma (p<0.05; p<0.001). The protein expression of HIF-1α was observed in 9 of 11 (82%) cases of cancer tissues. The mRNA expression level of HIF-1α showed a positive correlation with MMP-2 and VEGF, respectively (r=0.52, p<0.001; r=0.76, p<0.001). Conclusions: MMP-2, HIF-1α, and VEGF may be useful in detecting early carcinogenesis and progression of colon cancer. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2007;50:9-18)

        세치제내 SLS함유에 따른 타액과 세균변화

        이 연구는 세치제 내 함유되어 있는 SLS의 함유여부에 따라 구강 내 타액과 세균수의 변화정도를 비교분석 하여 향후 보다 양질의 세치제 개발을 위한 기초자료를 제공하고자 하였다. SLS의 함유량을 2.2%와 0.0%의 세치제 를 제조하여 각각 30명으로 구성된 두 집단의 실험대상자에게 4주간 사용하게 하고 실험 전 후의 타액과 구강 내 세 균 수의 변화 차이를 보았다. 연구결과 SLS의 배합여부는 타액, 세균수의 변화에 현저한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 또한 SLS 배합여부는 타액량과 구강 내 세균수의 관련성이 없는 결과를 보였다. 하지만 실험대상자들이 사용한 세치제에 대한 만족도 조사에서는 SLS가 함유되지 않은 그룹 보다 SLS가 함유된 그룹에서 만족도가 현저하게 높은 것으로 나 타났다. 만일 SLS가 선호감 때문에 이용되고 있다면 SLS의 적정 함유량에 대한 구체적 개선방안을 모색하여 할 것 이다. Dentifrices comtaining SLS of 2.2% and 0.0% were applied to 60 subjects for 4 weeks in this study. Dentifrice is used for salivary and oral bacteria amount change according to its SLS contents in toothpaste. The results were as follows. Anaysis of LSL contents befor and after the after experiment in salivary and bacterial count oral cavity didn't show significant difference in time interval. There was no correlation between salivary flow rate and bacterial count in the oral cavity according to content of SLS. Dentifrice of 2.2% content satisfied the subjects much more than that of 0.0% content(p<0.001).
