When the lungs are infected with bacteria, alveolar macrophages (AMs) are recruited to the site and play a crucial role in protecting the host by reducing excessive lung inflammation. However, the regulatory mechanisms that trigger the recruitment of AMs to lung alveoli during an infection are still not fully understood. In this study, we identified a critical role for NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4) in the recruitment of AMs during Staphylococcus aureus lung infection. We found that NOX4 knockout (KO) mice showed decreased recruitment of AMs and increased lung neutrophils and injury in response to S. aureus infection compared to wild-type (WT) mice. Interestingly, the burden of S. aureus in the lungs was not different between NOX4 KO and WT mice. Furthermore, we observed that depletion of AMs in WT mice during S. aureus infection increased the number of neutrophils and lung injury to a similar level as that observed in NOX4 KO mice. Additionally, we found that expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM1) in NOX4 KO mice-derived lung endothelial cells was lower than that in WT mice-derived endothelial cells. Therefore, we conclude that NOX4 plays a crucial role in inducing the recruitment of AMs by controlling ICAM1 expression in lung endothelial cells, which is responsible for resolving lung inflammation during acute S. aureus infection.

Thermal shock phenomenon has been known as a major reason of filter cracking. In this study, the thermal shock phenomenon was simulated in a light duty diesel engine with a PM loaded filter by rapid switching the engine operating conditions from 3500rpm of full load to idle. This study compares the thermal shock characteristics of platinum coated and uncoated cordierite filters and suggests safe PM loading amount against the thermal shock.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The low survival rate of patients with glioblastoma is in part due to the heterogeneity in the cell population of glioblastoma that includes cancer stem cells (CSCs). CSC niches include a hypoxic core that is also closely linked to self-renewal ability, migration, and drug resistance. Here, we report a CSC culture method in three-dimensional microfluidic cell culture devices under gravity-driven perfusion, which we dub hypoxia chips (H-chips). In H-chips, glioblastoma cells, U87, spontaneously formed spheroids within 12h, even without any addition of growth factors. Compared to monolayer-cultured cells in dishes, spheroids in H-chips showed higher expression of CSC markers, such as hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), CD133, and nestin. Spheroids in H-chips were more resistant to doxorubicin than monolayer-cultured ones in dishes. Transcriptional profiling revealed that the expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6), one of the inflammatory cytokines, was higher in spheroids in H-chips than in monolayer-cultured cells in dishes. IL-6 depleted cells failed to form spheroids in H-chips, and their drug resistance decreased. These results suggest that in H-chips, glioblastoma cells increased the production of IL-6, and promoted spheroid formation and other cancer stem cell properties, such as drug resistance. Our microfluidic cell culture method is highly useful for recapitulating CSC niches.</P>
Associated Injuries in Spine Trauma Patients: A Single-Center Experience

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and characteristics of associated injuries in patients with spine trauma. Methods: Data of 3,920 consecutive patients admitted to a regional trauma center during a 3-year period were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Of the 3,920 patients who were admitted to the trauma center during the 3-year study period, 389 (9.9%) had major spinal injuries. Among these 389 patients, 303 (77.9%) had associated injuries outside the spine. The most common body region of associated injuries was the extremities or pelvis (194 cases, 49.4%), followed by the chest (154 cases, 39.6%) and face (127 cases, 32.6%). Of these 303 patients, 149 (64%) had associated injuries that required surgical treatment such as laparotomy or internal fixation. Associated injuries were more common in patients with lumbar injuries (93.3%) or multiple spinal injuries (100%) than in those with lower cervical injuries (67.4%). There was a significant correlation between the location of the spinal injury and the body region of the associated injury. However, distant associated injuries were also common. Conclusions: Associated injuries were very common in spinal injury patients. Based on demographic groups, the trauma mechanism, and the location of spinal injury, an associated injury should be suspected until proven otherwise. Using a multidisciplinary and integrated approach to treat trauma victims is of the paramount importance.

Fluid is treated as one of the most important medicine in the hospital. In this study, wearable fluid cradle has developed to avoid inconvenience that patients had such as behavioral restrictions, blood reflux and safety issues. The purpose of this study is to keep the cradle to be perpendicular to the ground no matter the pose of patients using gyro sensor. It would successfully remove unnecessary inconveniences that patients should have endured with old cradle.
전원도시 이론에 기반한 지속가능한 도시재개발사업 구조에 관한 연구 - 미국 배터리 파크 시티와 허드슨 야드 개발사업을 중심으로 -

Sustainability is an important topic from the perspective of cities as a common international task related to the survival of humanity. Especially, this topic is critical from an urban redevelopment perspective. The garden city model, suggest by Howard, provides the theoretical foundation needed for sustainable city construction. This paper proposes a sustainable urban redevelopment structure to analyzing the garden city model and cases evaluated as successful redevelopment projects: Battery Park City and Hudson Yards. Our proposal is as follows: First, urban redevelopment projects should adopt the land or superficies lease method. This method creates a positive feedback system that converts profits from the land into public resources and reinvests them to the city. Second, a public corporation should establish for each urban project. This corporation manages urban development projects as well as maintains the city after the project is complete. This method can alleviate the inefficiency and agency problems from a bloated organization that has excessive authority. Third, the government should reflect the above proposal to smart city construction, a new urban paradigm. The usability of the garden city model proves through the United States case. Therefore, adopt our proposal can strengthen city construction competitiveness.
불소수지의 무전해 동도금을 위한 단계적 플라즈마 전처리법에 관한 연구

Low temperature plasma treatment with different gases and rf powers were performed to improve the adhesion strength between polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) and electroless deposited copper. According to the research, H₂ plasma having hydrogen radical was more effective in surface polarity modification than O₂ plasma due to the defluorination reaction. However, surface roughness of PTFE was more increased with O₂ than H₂ plasma. PTFE treated with 120W-O₂ plasma and 250W-H₂ plasma, consecutively showed rougher surface than single step 250W-H₂ plasma treated one and more hydrophilic than single step 120W-O₂ plasma treated one. And it showed 5B tape test grade, which is better adhesion property than 1B or 3B obtained by single step plasma treatment. In addition, adhesion strength between PTFE and Cu deposit is also deeply affected by residual water on its interface.

한국형발사체 3단 엔진 개발을 위한 중간 단계로 액체산소-케로신 추진제 7톤급 액체로켓엔진의 파워팩 시험이 수행되었다. 연소기를 제외한 7톤 엔진시스템을 이용한 파워팩 시험의 시험결과를 제시하였다. 액체산소-케로신 추진제 엔진시스템의 시동 절차를 개발하기 위해 연소기를 오리피스로 모사하는 조건에서의 파워팩 시험기의 예냉, 파이로시동기를 이용한 시동 및 가스발생기 점화, 터보펌프 정격 구동이 성공적으로 수행되었다. 본 7톤 엔진 파워팩 시험 결과는 한국형발사체 3단용 7톤 액체로켓엔진 점화/시동 절차를 개발하는데 활용되었다. As an interstage of the 7tonf LOx/Kerosene liquid rocket engine development for KSLV-II 3<SUP>rd</SUP> Stage Engine, powerpack test of 7 tonf engine are performed. The results of powerpack test using 7-tonf engine system except combustion chamber are presented. For the development of startup sequence of LOx-Kerosene engine system, chilldown procedure, startup using pyrostarter, ignition of gas generator, and nominal operation is successfully performed. The results of 7tonf powerpack test were used for the determination of startup and ignition sequence of 7tonf engine system for KSLV-II 3<SUP>rd</SUP> Stage.
