The Idea of the University in Korea:A Re-Imagination

This paper is an attempt to argue for the necessity of thinking about the idea of the university as a precondition for discussing the future of the university in Korea. The prevailing discourse on university reform calls for professionalization of learning and utilization of knowledge, subsuming education process under the capitalist logic of marketization and competition. I argue that this is one-sided and even dangerous as it neglects the role of higher education in formation and cultivation of the mind. Furthermore, it intensifies the sense of crisis in higher education in general and in humanities divisions in particular. Rather than simply accepting the market forces of change as the inevitable future of universities in Korea, this future has to be an open question to be discussed and debated. The work of re-imagining the university in Korea that I present here requires two historical examinations: First, an examination of the history of universities in the West as a history of ideas about the university; second, an examination of the Confucian higher education, embodied through the education at Sunggyungwan, as a model of higher education whose merits have to be discussed and evaluated. I conclude this paper by suggesting that the question of “What Is a University?” is a necessary question and that the future of higher education in Korea has to begin by responding to this very question.
홍화자(紅花子) 약침료법(藥鍼療法) 가미한 한방치료로 호전된 마미증후군(馬尾症候群) 환자(患者) 1례(例)

갑작스러운 요통과 양측하지통, 하지의 근력 감소, 대소변 장애 및 운동, 감각장애로 양방병원에서 마미증후군으로 진단받고 추긍판 절제술과 감압술을 시행 후 임상적인 호전을 보이지 않은 환자 1례에 대해 紅花子 藥鍼療法을 중심으로 복합적인 한방치료를 시행한 결과 요통에 대한 VAS와 요통점수표, ODI 항목에서는 각 항목 모두에서 현저한 호전 양상을 나타내었다. 운동기능 및 보행에 있어서 입원 당시에 보행기에 의지하여 보행하였는데 치료 후에는 단독으로 보행이 가능하고 일상적인 가벼운 생활도 가능해지게 되었다. 배뇨기능에 있어서도 자발적인 배뇨가 가능할 정도로 완전회복 되었다. 하지만 배변의 상태는 입원 당시와 치료 후에는 변의가 느껴지는 것 이외에 자발적인 배변은 이루어지지 않았다. 감각 기능의 회복에 있어서도 온통각, 압촉각과 하지 냉감은 호전 양상을 보였으나 안장 감각과 괄약근의 기능은 거의 회복되지 않았다. 본 연구를 기초로 하여 향후 수술이나 양방적인 치료 후에 발생할 수 있는 후유증의 관리에 있어서 紅花子 藥鍼에 대한 더욱 심도있는 후속 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다. Objectives: This study was to investigate the effect of the Carthami Semen Herbal acupuncture therapy on a Cauda equina syndrome patient who has a complex of low back pain, bilateral sciatica, saddle anesthesia and motor weakness in the lower extremity and paraplegia with bladder and bowel incontinence. Methods: Oriental Medical Therapy was performed on the Cauda equina syndrome patient from July 15th 2004 to July 29th 2004. The patient was treated with Carthami Semen Herbal acupuncture at BL22, BL23, BL25, BL28 and GV3 in combination with herbal medicine and conventional body acupuncture. We evaluated The Visual Analog Scale(VAS), Improvement index, The Oswestry Diability Index(ODI), gaiting, dyschezia, bladder incontinence, duration of urination and area of anesthesia, Digital Infrared Thermographic Imaging(DITI) before and after treatment. Results: 1. After treatment, VAS, Improvement index, ODI were improved each from 10 to 2, from 21 to 73, from 333 to 166. 2. After treatment, gaiting, bladder incontinence, duration of urination and area of anesthesia and DITI were improved well, but dyschezia was remained. Conclusions: From this case it is thought Carthami Semen herbal acupuncture therapy is very effective to Cauda Equina Syndrome and further study is needed for the confirmation of the effect of Carthami Semen Herbal acupuncture.
수술 전 심전도분석과 어린이 사시 수술 중 서맥의 발생정도와의 상관관계

Background : Severe bradycardia occurring in strabismus surgery is unpredictable and may lead to cardiac arrest. If we identify patients who have risk of severe bradycardia during strabismus surgery, it is helpful to provide a more meticulous anesthesia. In this study, we investigated the correlation between the degree of bradycardia and indices of power spectral analysis and nonlinear dynamic data analysis of preoperative ECG. Methods : ECG was collected for twenty minutes from strabismus patients (n = 93). No premedicants were administered. After administration of anesthesia and traction of extraocular muscle, the lowest heart rate was recorded. We calculated the correlation coefficient between the power spectral density, approximate entropy and correlation dimension of preoperative ECG and the difference between preoperative and lowest HR. Results : As the difference between the preoperative heart rate and the intraoperative bradycardia increased, the preoperative ECG showed a low total power (r = 0.27, P = 0.016), low low-frequency power (r = 0.31, P = 0.049), low high-frequency power (r = 0.30, P = 0.007) and high ratio of low to high-frequency power (r = 28, P = 0.03). There was no correlation between bradycardia and approximate entropy and correlation dimension, respectively. Conclusions: There was a correlation between indices of power spectral analysis of preoperative ECG and degree of bradycardia during strabismus surgery. Therefore we take into consideration preoperative ECG and its analytic indices in order to provide careful preparation for high risk patients who exhibit a tendency to severe bradycardia. Kinetics of Recombinant ${\beta}$-Secretase and Its Application to Inhibitor Screening

${\beta}$-Secretase (${\beta}$-SEC) is one of the prime targets for therapeutic intervention of Alzheimer's disease. We previously described the expression of human ${\beta}$-SEC in Trichoplusia ni BTl Tn5B1-4 cells transformed with cDNAs encoding ${\beta}$1,4-galactosyltransferase (GalT) and Gal${\beta}$1,4-GlcNAc ${\alpha}$2,6sialyltransferase (ST). To extend this work we investigated the kinetics of recombinant ${\beta}$-secretase and the feasibility of recombinant ${\beta}$-secretase for its inhibitor screening application. Recombinant ${\beta}$-SECs were purified from cultures of Tn5B1-4${\beta}$SEC and Tn5B1-4${\beta}$SEC/GaIT-ST cells. Recombinant ${\beta}$-SEC from Tn5B1-4${\beta}$SEC/GaIT-ST cells exhibited a higher $K_{cat}/K_M$ value compared to the control Tn5B1-4${\beta}$SEC cells. We also attempted to screen the compounds inhibiting the activity of recombinant ${\beta}$-secretase among the metabolites isolated from Chrysanthemum coronarium L. Based on the inhibition analysis using purified ${\beta}$-SEC from Tn5B1-4${\beta}$SEC/GaIT-ST cells, 3-0-[${\beta}$-D-galactopyranosyl (1${\longrightarrow}$6)-${\alpha}$-D-galactopyranosyl]-glyceride was the best inhibitor among the compounds tested. The concentration at half-maximum inhibition values ($IC_{50}$) of this compound was estimated to be 2.8 ${\mu}M$.
