Vol.13 No.3
This study aims to explore the changes of the best practice contest project for parents’ participation in education organized by Ministry of Education from 2009 to 2019, and to analyze the contents of 85 best practices selected from the 2019 contest. Since 2015, as the purpose of contest has focused more on finding best practices to support parents’ participation, the proportion of schools and parent support centers has increased in the contest while the proportion of parents’ associations has decreased considerably. The field of contest has been gradually integrated around the subjects, and the relatively high proportion of volunteering activity and parents’ education showed that parents participated as educational assistants or consumers rather than educational entities. Among the activities included in the selected best practices in 2019, the proportion of parents’ education was the highest, while cases with higher rankings showed a leading participation in school curriculum by parents. It was discussed the necessity for expanding the proportion of parents’ association gradually at the contest in the future and improving the quality of parents’ education which can be linked to school participation.

Tropical forests play a critical role in mitigating climate change, and therefore, an accurate and precise estimation of tropical forest carbon (C) is needed. However, there are many uncertainties associated with C stock estimation in a tropical forest, mainly due to its large variations in biomass. Hence, we quantified C stocks in an intact lowland mixed dipterocarp forest (MDF) in Brunei, and investigated variations in biomass and topography. Tree, deadwood, and soil C stocks were estimated by using the allometric equation method, the line intersect method, and the sampling method, respectively. Understory vegetation and litter were also sampled. We then analyzed spatial variations in tree and deadwood biomass in relation to topography. The total C stock was 321.4 Mg C $ha^{-1}$, and living biomass, dead organic matter, and soil C stocks accounted for 67%, 11%, and 23%, respectively, of the total. The results reveal that there was a relatively high C stock, even compared to other tropical forests, and that there was no significant relationship between biomass and topography. Our results provide useful reference data and a greater understanding of biomass variations in lowland MDFs, which could be used for greenhouse gas emission-reduction projects.
The role of openness in open collaboration: A focus on open-source software development projects
Lee, Saerom,Baek, Hyunmi,Oh, Sehwan Electronics and Telecommunications Research Instit 2020 ETRI Journal Vol.42 No.2
Open-source software development projects are well suited for exploring new ideas and acquiring knowledge from developers outside of the project. In this paper, we examine the impact of external developers on innovation in open-source software development from the perspective of organizational learning theory. We examine the roles of external and internal developers, who "explore" and "exploit," respectively, on the innovation performance of 17 691 open-source software development projects whose data is stored in the GitHub platform. The results indicate that a multifaceted strategy, in which the exploitation successfully supports the exploration, is most effective for their success. The results also indicate that the role of exploration decreases after the release of the software.
Fabrication of Controllable Cellulose-based Films by Using Ionic Liquid
Vol.2021 No.10
Cellulose-based films are potential alternatives for synthetic polymer films due to their inherent biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this study, to prepare cellulose-based composite films, cellulose was blended with various biopolymers by co-dissolution in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, followed by coagulation with ethanol. Various cellulose-based films were obtained by blending bacterial cellulose, cyclodextrin, dextran, starch, agarose, agar, arabic gum, carrageenan, chitosan, tragacanth gum, xanthan gum, xylan, lignin, gelatin, collagen, and silk. According to the blended biopolymer type, the cellulose-based films showed different physicochemical properties including surface morphology, thermal properties, optical properties, and hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity. These distinct characteristics of the cellulose-based films affected the adsorption efficiency for dyes and proteins and the cytotoxicity for TCMK-1 normal kidney cell. Hence, the cellulose-based films blended with biopolymers have potentials as novel basic materials for biosensors, biomedical, bioelectronics, and biocatalysts owing to their controllable properties depending on blended biopolymer type.
