The heat generation mechanism of angular contact ball bearing are analyzed. The heat generation rate and ball temperature of angular contact ball bearing are calculated with respect to the various shaft speed, load and lubrication method. The analysis is focused mainly on the predominant sources of heat generation which are spin-moment, gyro-moment, torque due to applied load and viscous friction torque. The viscosity of lubricant is assumed to be a function of the temperature only and the contact between ball and race is assumed to be elastic. Lumped capacitance method is adopted to compute ball temperature. Effective load is calculated iteratively considering the rate of ball expansion due to the temperature rise.

Objective: We analyze pain relief, deformity correction and complication rate after percutaneous kyphoplasty for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Methods: The authors retrospectively reviewed medical records and radiological findings of 32 patients who underwent percutaneous kyphoplasty for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Results: The patients had significant pain improvement with the procedure. The visual analogue scale score reduced from 8.6 to 3.4 significantly after the procedure. The midline vertebral body height significantly increased postoperatively, but mean kyphotic angle did not. There was no serious complication except one case of epidural cement leakage without neurological impairment. Conclusion: Balloon kyphoplasty safely can reduce severe back pain and returned geriatric patients to higher activity levels. The midline vertebral height is restored significantly. However kyphotic deformity correction is not significant as contrary to what we expected from the present study before it was carried out.

Neonatal lupus can occur in infants born to mother with autoimmune disorders through transplacental auto-antibodies. Clinical manifestations in neonatal lupus include cutaneous lesions and hematologic or hepatobiliary findings resembling those seen in systemic lupus erythematosus. In autoimmune state, macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) represent a critical and potentially fatal complication that can result in mortality if not immediately identified and managed with the appropriate care. Here we present a 33-day-old girl diagnosed with neonatal lupus and serious MAS. She was delivered by a primipara mother who did not exhibit any autoimmune symptoms. The patient visited the hospital due to fever and pancytopenia. Laboratory data were compatible with MAS, including pancytopenia, high level of ferritin, soluble interleukin-2, and decreased natural killer cell activity. In addition, autoimmune study showed positive results for anti-nuclear antibody (ANA), anti-Sjogren syndrome antigen A (SSA), and SSB, The autoimmune study for mother also showed positive results for ANA, anti-SSA, and SSB. The patient recovered after she received high dose steroid and supportive care. Our case indicates that neonatal lupus should be taken into consideration when fever, erythematous skin rash, and pancytopenia are observed in infants, even if their mothers have no prior history of autoimmune conditions.

<P>A herringbone groove pattern is applied to a plane disk damper of a hard disk drive to reduce the axial vibration of the disk rotating at high speed. According to the design parameters such as mean radius rm, ridge-groove ratio B, and spiral angle β , the performance of the herringbone groove disk damper is studied numerically in terms of the stiffness and the damping coefficients and the ratio of the axial stiffness to the frictional torque. The dynamic coefficients are calculated from the result of computational fluid dynamics solution of a simple hard disk drive model using four-point central difference scheme. To confirm the numerical results, the nonrepeatable run-out of the disk is measured when a plane or a herringbone groove disk damper is used. It is found that a herringbone groove disk damper increases the stiffness as well as the damping coefficient of the air film by 20% more than those of a plane disk damper.</P>

Signal Processing is often implemented to enhance detection of steel bar after measuring concrete specimen with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). An antenna with 1 GHz center frequency was used to detect a steel bar. Spectrum analysis in frequency domain was performed fourier transforming the measured data in time domain. Frequency spectrum was filtered according to varying cut-off frequency. The data obtained in each specimen was signal-processed and it was confirmed that the ability to analyise information inside concrete was improved. The steel bar inside concrete was image-processed.

Under the pressure to open the service market as proposed by World Trade Organization, we can easily expect our educational systems for allied health professions will experience a lot of changes in near future. Accordingly, we compared our current educational systems for allied health professions with the foreign ones and mapped out some strategies predicting the forthcoming enormous changes. Major investigations and analysis are summed up as follows, The educational programs for allied health professions which was started in 1963 in Korea are stilled remained as 2 to 3 school years, while the systems in advanced countries have already been changed or been changing from 2 year to 4 year college levels. We can hardly find the uniform educational system or school years for the allied health professions in the world except for Korea. Fortunately, university level four-year programs for the profession was established in 1979 in Won-joo for the first time in Korea. However, there are still only few four-year programs in this country. To meet the rapidly changing needs we have faced in the health areas we should supply appropriate health personnel through various efforts. Now we would like to suggest followings, <Educational goals for the allied health professions> 1) reconfirming characteristics for the educational goals of health professions 2) extending school years for the allied health professions 3) strengthening clinical training and internship 4) expanding opportunities for the continuing education through lifelong education 5) upgrading from old-fashioned technologies to advanced technologies 6) cultivating competencies of health professionals for the global competition <Suggestions for the Development of Allied Health Professions> 1) reforming the school years of educational programs for the allied health professions to meet the global standards 2) expanding the role of junior college programs for the allied health professions through the development of intensive courses in the professions. 3) diversifying and specializing the allied health professions mainly through 4 year B.S. degree programs.
Rebleeding of Intramedullary Cavernous Angioma during Pregnancy

The authors report a rare case of aggravated myelopathy due to rebleeding of intramedullary cavernous angioma during pregnancy. A 29-year-old woman with a intramedullary cavernous angioma of the lower thoracic spinal cord was initially managed with a conservative treatment. She suffered the progressive paraparesis 16 months later during the 3rd trimester of her pregnancy. The follow-up magnetic resonance imaging revealed rebleeding of the previous cavernous angioma. The entire lesion was resected with a standard microsurgical technique after delivery, and her neurological symptoms subsequently resolved. Key words:Cavernous angioma;Rebleeding;Pregnancy.
