      • p16 Expression as a Surrogate Marker for HPV Infection in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma can Predict Response to Neo-Adjuvant Chemotherapy

        Background: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a common cancer in the north east of India. The present study concerned the prevalence of human papilloma virus (HPV) in the ESCC in north eastern India and its impact on response to chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: p16 expression, a surrogate marker for HPV infection was assessed in 101 pre-treatment biopsies of locally advanced ESCC, reported from a comprehensive cancer centre in north east India, using immunohistochemistry. All patients received neo-adjuvant chemotherapy. Response was assessed clinically and histopathologically with attention to p16 expression. Results: p16 was expressed in 22% of ESCC (22 out of 101) and was more prevalent in patients who were more than 45 years of age (P=0.048). p16 positive tumors appeared more commonly in the upper 2/3 of the thoracic esophagus (18 in 22). Nine of the 22 (41%) p16 positive tumors achieved pathologic complete response following neo-adjuvant chemotherapy (P=0.008). There was a trend towards reduced mortality in this group (P=0.048). Some 9 of the 20 (45%) patients who achieved pathologic complete response were p16 positive. Conclusions: Expression of p16 in ESCC correlates with higher rate of pathologic complete remission in patients undergoing neo adjuvant chemotherapy and could be a predictive marker for response assessment.

        Coenzyme Q10: a progress towards the treatment of neurodegenerative disease

        Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10, or ubiquinone) is an electron carrier of the mitochondrial respiratory chain (electron transport chain) with antioxidant properties. In view of the involvement of CoQ10 in oxidative phosphorylation and cellular antioxidant protection a deficiency in this quinone would be expected to contribute to disease pathophysiology by causing a failure in energy metabolism and antioxidant status. Indeed, a deficit in CoQ10 status has been determined in a number of neuromuscular and neurodegenerative disorders. Primary disorders of CoQ10 biosynthesis are potentially treatable conditions and therefore a high degree of clinical awareness about this condition is essential. A secondary loss of CoQ10 status following HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statins) treatment has been implicated in the pathophysiology of the myotoxicity associated with this pharmacotherapy. CoQ10 and its analogue, idebenone, have been widely used in the treatment of neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disorders. These compounds could potentially play a role in the treatment of mitochondrial disorders, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Friedreich’s ataxia, and other conditions which have been linked to mitochondrial dysfunction. This article reviews the physiological roles of CoQ10, as well as the rationale and the role in clinical practice of CoQ10 supplementation in different neurological diseases, from primary CoQ10 deficiency to neurodegenerative disorders. These will help in future for treatment of patients suffering from neurodegenerative disease.

        The main aim of this paper is to introduce an extension of the generalized ${\tau}$-Gauss hypergeometric function $_rF^{\tau}_s(z)$ and investigate various properties of the new function such as integral representations, derivative formulas, Laplace transform, Mellin trans-form and fractional calculus operators. Some of the interesting special cases of our main results have been discussed.

        Background: Successful aging (SA) was fi rst defi ned by Rowe and Kahn as avoidance of disease and disability, maintenance of physical and cognitive function and engagement in social and productive activities. More recently, spirituality has been recognized as an important contributor to SA. Unlike religiosity, spirituality has a more experiential and existential focus upon an individual`s internalized faith, value and beliefs and their infi uence upon daily behaviour. Most of the existing studies on spirituality and SA have been performed outside Asia. The aim of this study was to examine the role of spirituality in SA in a multiethnic community in Singapore. We hypothesised that spirituality is positively correlated with attributes of SA (resilience, better cognitive functions, optimism, mastery, satisfaction with life, and self-rated SA). Methods: Singapore Successful Aging Study (SSOSA) was a sub-study added to the second wave of a large population-based study of aging and health (Singapore Longitudinal Aging Studies-SLAS). Cross-sectional survey of 489 community living Singaporeans aged 65 years and older. We collected data on sociodemographic characteristics, and measures of the SA attributes using standardized culturally appropriateinstruments. Results: Our sample comprised Chinese (85%), Malay (10%), and Indians (5%). On hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis, spirituality was signifi cantly correlatedwith female gender, ethnicity (Malays and Indians), resilience, optimism, and better cognitive status after controlling for age, marital status, education, income, depression, and chronic medical conditions. Conclusions: Spirituality is one of the major determinants in the attributes of SAoptimism, resilience, and better cognitive function. More importantly, gender and ethnicity play a key role in the expression of these attributes.

        A Multi-Perspective Benchmarking Framework for Estimating Usable-Security of Hospital Management System Software Based on Fuzzy Logic, ANP and TOPSIS Methods

        One of the biggest challenges that the software industry is facing today is to create highly efficient applications without affecting the quality of healthcare system software. The demand for the provision of software with high quality protection has seen a rapid increase in the software business market. Moreover, it is worthless to offer extremely user-friendly software applications with no ideal security. Therefore a need to find optimal solutions and bridge the difference between accessibility and protection by offering accessible software services for defense has become an imminent prerequisite. Several research endeavours on usable security assessments have been performed to fill the gap between functionality and security. In this context, several Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) approaches have been implemented on different usability and security attributes so as to assess the usable-security of software systems. However, only a few specific studies are based on using the integrated approach of fuzzy Analytic Network Process (FANP) and Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) technique for assessing the significant usable-security of hospital management software. Therefore, in this research study, the authors have employed an integrated methodology of fuzzy logic, ANP and TOPSIS to estimate the usable - security of Hospital Management System Software. For the intended objective, the study has taken into account 5 usable-security factors at first tier and 16 sub-factors at second tier with 6 hospital management system softwares as alternative solutions. To measure the weights of parameters and their relation with each other, Fuzzy ANP is implemented. Thereafter, Fuzzy TOPSIS methodology was employed and the rating of alternatives was calculated on the foundation of the proximity to the positive ideal solution.

        Perspective of Membrane Technology in Dairy Industry: A Review

        Membrane technology has revolutionized the dairy sector. Different types of membranes are used in the industry for various purposes like extending the shelf life of milk without exposure to heat treatment, standardization of the major components of milk for tailoring new products as well increasing yield and quality of the dairy products, and concentrating, fractionation and purification of milk components especially valuable milk proteins in their natural state. In the cheese industry, membranes increase the yield and quality of cheese and control the whey volume, by concentrating the cheese milk. With the advancement of newer technology in membrane processes, it is possible to recover growth factor from whey. With the introduction of superior quality membranes as well as newer technology, the major limitation of membranes, fouling or blockage has been overcome to a greater extent.

        Removal of tannic acid from aqueous solution by magnetic carbohydrate natural polymer

        Adsorptive removal of tannic acid (TA) form aqueous solution by synthesized magnetic lignocellulosic adsorbent was investigated. SEM, EDAX, and FTIR analysis were performed to characterize the magnetic saw dust (MSD). The effect of various operational parameters such as contact time, concentration and solution pH etc were studied. The optimum adsorption of TA was observed at pH 4. Results revealed that the Temkin isotherm model fitted well to the adsorption equilibrium data and obeyed the pseudosecond order kinetics model. The values of free energy change and activation energy suggested that physical forces were involved in the adsorption of TA onto MSD.
