Development of a WLAN Based Monitoring System for Group Activity Measurement in Real-Time

In recent years, there has been a rise in epidemiological evidence suggesting the health benefits of a physically active lifestyle. However, it is not always easy for individuals to personally recognize the optimal conditions for exercise and physical activity. Wearable acceleration-based pedometers have become widely used in estimating the amount of physical activity, and to a limited extent,providing information regarding exercise intensity, but they have never been used to assess adaptation to exercise. In order to realize simultaneous activity monitoring for multiple users exercising outdoors, we developed a prototype wireless local area network (WLAN) based system. In our system, a WLAN is deployed outside, and a user wearing a smart phone and monitoring device exercises freely within the coverage area of the wireless network. By doing so, the developed system is able to monitor the activity of each user andmeasures various parameters including those related to exercise adaptation. In a demonstration experiment, the developed system was evaluated and used to monitor users enjoying a Nordic walk, after which users were immediately able to receive their exercise report. In this paper, we discuss the requirements and issues in developing an activity monitoring system and report the findings we obtained through the demonstration experiment.
Blood vessel remodeling in the cerebral cortex induced by binge alcohol intake in mice

Ethanol is toxic to the brain and causes various neurological disorders. Although ethanol can directly exert toxicity on neurons, it also acts on other cell types in the central nervous system. Blood vessel endothelial cells interact with, and are affected by blood ethanol. However, the effects of ethanol on the vascular structures of the brain have not been well documented. In this study, we examined the effects of binge levels of ethanol on brain vasculature. Immunostaining analysis indicated structural alterations of blood vessels in the cerebral cortex, which became more tortuous than those in the control mice after ethanol administration. The interaction between the blood vessels and astrocytes decreased, especially in the upper layers of the cerebral cortex. Messenger RNA expression analysis revealed a unique downregulation of Vegfa mRNA encoding vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A among VEGF, angiopoietin, endothelin family angiogenic and blood vessel remodeling factors. The expression of three proteoglycan core proteins, glypican-5, neurocan, and serglycin, was also altered after ethanol administration. Thus, binge levels of ethanol affect the expression of VEGF-A and blood vessel-supporting proteoglycans, resulting in changes in the vascular structure of the cerebral cortex.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of concomitant arthroscopic lateral release (LR) in open wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) by comparing the pre- and postoperative radiological parameters of patellar position and orientation. Materials and Methods: The study was comprised of 19 knees undergoing OWHTO and concomitant LR and 18 knees undergoing OWHTO alone. Radiological parameters for patellar position and orientation included the Caton-Deschamps index (CDI), Blackburne-Peel index (BPI), patellar tilting angle (PTA), patellar lateral shift (PLS), and patellofemoral distance (PFD), which were evaluated in the preoperative period and at one year after surgery. Results: Patellar height was significantly reduced after surgery as indicated by the decrease in BPI (p=0.03) in the OWHTO/LR group, and decrease in CDI (p=0.03) and BPI (p=0.04) in the OWHTO alone group. PTA and PLS were significantly reduced after the combined OWHTO/LR procedure (p=0.04 and p=0.04, respectively). By contrast, no significant changes were detected when isolated OWHTO was performed. Conclusions: OWHTO induced a postoperative decrease in patellar height in both groups. Regarding the change in patellofemoral alignment, concomitant LR in OWHTO significantly decreased lateral patellar tilt and shift, while no significant difference in those parameters were noted in the OWHTO alone knees.

Purpose: To evaluate the postoperative change in patellar position after medial closed distal femoral osteotomy (DFO) performed for valgus osteoarthritic knees. Methods: The study included 21 consecutive knees in 20 patients undergoing DFO. A minimum of 2-year followup data was obtained for all subjects with a mean follow-up period of 42 months (range 31–59 months). The patellar position was evaluated on plain radiographs preoperatively, 1-year postoperatively, and 2-year postoperatively. For patellar height, the modified Insall–Salvati Index (mISI), modified Caton–Deschamps Index (mCDI) and modified Blackburne–Peel Index (mBPI) were measured on the standing lateral radiographs. Patellofemoral alignment on the axial plane was assessed on skyline views with 30° flexion based on the measurements for lateral patellar tilt (LPT) and lateral patellar shift (LPS). Measured values at pre- and postoperative phases were statistically compared using a two-way analysis of variance. Results: All indices including mISI, mCDI, mBPI, LPT and LPS showed no statistically significant postoperative changes. Conclusion: Medial closed-wedge DFO performed for valgus osteoarthritic knees did not significantly influence patellofemoral alignment either on the sagittal or axial plane. Therefore, to highlight the clinical relevance of our findings, medial closed-wedge DFO for the valgus knee does not adversely affect the patellofemoral joint.

As a method of instruction of information morals education, Tamada and others proposes the method of instruction by three sorts of knowledge, and also supposes that the method called “feedback method” of making one's act examine from a victim's position is effective to the student of low information morals (Tamada et al.1987). In this research, the new teaching materials which combined a feedback method and virtual reality (VR) technology were developed, and the effect was verified. In order for the student of low information morals to make it specifically look back upon the act performed within VR from a victim's position, within VR, the subject's head shot was attached to the face of the avatar which serves as an assailant, and victim experience was carried out. As a result, before and after carrying out victim experience, improvement in the consciousness to information morals and reduction of the act contrary to information morals were seen.

Objective: Glycemic control varies based on lifestyle factors and stress coping mechanisms, which are influenced by personality. The psychological factors associated with glycemic control have not yet been established in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The relationship between a 5-factor model of personality and glycemic control was evaluated in individuals with T2DM. Methods: The subjects were 503 Japanese outpatients with T2DM. Glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels, depressive status, insomnia and personality traits were assessed. Lifestyle factors of the patients, such as habitual alcohol consumption and smoking, were also included in the analyses. ResultsBecause the influence of insulin therapy on HbA1c is so strong, we stratified the patients according to : insulin use. Simple regression analysis showed a significant correlation between HbA1c and neuroticism in patients who did not use insulin. After adjustment for confounders, multiple regression analyses revealed that none of the personality factors, including neuroticism, were found to be associated with HbA1c. Conclusion: These findings suggest that personality traits do not have a large impact on glycemic control. Further studies are required to confirm the relationships between psychological factors and glycemic control using a longitudinal study design.
