        Do Foreign Direct Investment, Energy Consumption and Urbanization Enhance Economic Growth in Six ASEAN Countries?

        The neoclassical economic supporters have suggested that foreign direct investment and raw material (e.g., coal, electricity, gas, and oil) are critical economic growth inputs. Few previous studies have analyzed the relationship between foreign direct investment and energy consumption on economic growth. However, existing studies usually have applied the frequentist inference. The limitation of the frequentist inference is that, if the coefficient of the independent variable is not yet significant, then conclusions might be unreliable. By applying the Bayesian approach, the main aim of this study is to revisit the impact of foreign direct investment, electricity consumption, and urbanization on economic growth in six ASEAN countries from 1980 to 2016. The obtained outcome shows that the impact of electricity consumption is evident and positive on economic growth in both frequentist and Bayesian inferences. However, the influence of foreign direct investment is not identified by frequentist inference, while Bayesian inference provides evidence that foreign direct investment is a moderately positive impact on economic growth. The empirical result from Bayesian inference contributes to the literature on foreign direct investment modeling and could be of significant importance for a more efficient foreign direct investment attracting and achieve sustainability in the long-term.

      • Effective power dispatch capability decision method for a wind-battery hybrid power system

        <P>With integration of a battery energy storage system (BESS) into the wind power system, the wind power variation can be mitigated to dispatch a constant power to the grid. To effectively supply the constant power dispatch to the grid with a limited BESS, the power dispatch capability should be defined primarily at beginning of each dispatching interval to cooperate with the transmission system operator. This study introduces a method to determine the power dispatch capability of a wind-battery hybrid power system with the minimal battery capacity. The power dispatch capability is decided under the condition that the battery power is maintained below its rating and that the state of charge of the battery is guaranteed within a safe range. For economic BESS operation, the battery capacity, including the power and energy ratings, is also determined cost-effectively to obtain the constant power dispatch. Based on the long-term wind power profile, the authors develop the determination process to minimise the battery capacity which ensures that the BESS sufficiently mitigates wind power variation to dispatch the constant power into grid under all wind conditions. To evaluate the proposed determination method, a case study is carried out with a 3-MW wind turbine generator and real wind speed data measured on Jeju Island in Korea.</P>

      • Key Determinants and the Effects of Perceived Value on Online Repurchase Intention of E-Commerce in Vietnam

        The purpose of this paper is to explore how customers’ repurchase intention of e-commerce in Viet Nam which is considered as a potential country in developing this field. This paper focuses to the effects of perceived value on online repurchase intention of e-commerce in Vietnam and what key determinants affect to the perceived value. To test the proposed hypotheses, the quantitative method is applied to collect the data. The partial least square (PLS) was used as a technique to analyze the data included the measurement as well as structural model. Data from this research collected from 261 Vietnamese online shoppers who have already purchased in E-commerce in Vietnam.

        Determinants of Foreign Direct Investment: Evidence from Vietnam

        The paper investigates the determinants of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam in 2000-2019 period. This study uses difference Generalized Methods of Moments (GMM) and Pooled Mean Group (PMG) to analyse panel data officially provided by General Statistical Office of Vietnam. The results show that market size impacts positively significant on FDI attraction: 1% -1.45% (PMG) and 1% -1.25% (GMM). Besides, some other factors have positive influences as labor force, macroeconomic policy, macroeconomic stability and skilled labor. Meantime, the trade openness negatively affects FDI inflows in the short-term, while not being statistically significant in the long-term. Moreover, economic shocks often have a negative impact on FDI inflows. The findings of this study lead to the following recommendations. First, authorities should pay special attention to encourage economic growth rate in Vietnam to expand market size because this is the first priority of foreign investors. Second, authorities need to continue increasing the rate of skilled labor, especially highly qualified management force, engineers and well-skilled workers. Third, the authorities should adjust trade openness to boost the role of its determinant in attracting FDI inflows. Fourth, macroeconomic stability needs to be governed by international standards in order to secure the belief of foreign investors in the long-term.

        Occurrence of metal-rich acidic groundwaters around the Mekong Delta (Vietnam): A phenomenon linked to well installation

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Acidic groundwaters enriched with heavy metals are frequently observed in the coastal plain aquifers. The acidic pHs are observed even in the deep confined aquifers in southern Vietnam. This study geochemically explores the causes of these acidic groundwaters by investigating 41 groundwater samples, 4 soil samples and a 54 m long sediment core and the long-term monitoring data (4189 observations) obtained from 178 wells of the National Groundwater Monitoring Network for the South of Vietnam (NGMNS). The groundwater data show elevated Fe, Mn, Al, Pb, and Zn concentrations as the pH becomes acidic and suggest pyrite oxidation be the major cause for the groundwater acidification. This is further confirmed by pyrite framboids observed in the sediment or soil samples taken from the sites where strongly acidic groundwaters were observed. Results of leaching experiments using sediment and soil samples indicate that high metal concentrations in the acidic pH are associated with the increased metal solubility and mineral dissolution kinetics. The acidification of deep groundwaters is revealed to be associated with well installation, indicating the importance of proper well-installation techniques to protect water quality of deep confined aquifers.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Metal-rich, acidic groundwaters are commonly observed in Mekong Delta area. </LI> <LI> Pyrite oxidation is the major reason for groundwater acidification in the area. </LI> <LI> The pyrite oxidation in deep confined aquifer was induced by well installation. </LI> <LI> Well installation techniques minimizing aquifer disturbance are required. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        An efficient approach for model updating of a large-scale cable-stayed bridge using ambient vibration measurements combined with a hybrid metaheuristic search algorithm

        This paper proposes a novel approach to model updating for a large-scale cable-stayed bridge based on ambient vibration tests coupled with a hybrid metaheuristic search algorithm. Vibration measurements are carried out under excitation sources of passing vehicles and wind. Based on the measured structural dynamic characteristics, a finite element (FE) model is updated. For long-span bridges, ambient vibration test (AVT) is the most effective vibration testing technique because ambient excitation is freely available, whereas a forced vibration test (FVT) requires considerable efforts to install actuators such as shakers to produce measurable responses. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a famous metaheuristic algorithm applied successfully in numerous fields over the last decades. However, PSO has big drawbacks that may decrease its efficiency in tackling the optimization problems. A possible drawback of PSO is premature convergence leading to low convergence level, particularly in complicated multi-peak search issues. On the other hand, PSO not only depends crucially on the quality of initial populations, but also it is impossible to improve the quality of new generations. If the positions of initial particles are far from the global best, it may be difficult to seek the best solution. To overcome the drawbacks of PSO, we propose a hybrid algorithm combining GA with an improved PSO (HGAIPSO). Two striking characteristics of HGAIPSO are briefly described as follows: (1) because of possessing crossover and mutation operators, GA is applied to generate the initial elite populations and (2) those populations are then employed to seek the best solution based on the global search capacity of IPSO that can tackle the problem of premature convergence of PSO. The results show that HGAIPSO not only identifies uncertain parameters of the considered bridge accurately, but also outperforms than PSO, improved PSO (IPSO), and a combination of GA and PSO (HGAPSO) in terms of convergence level and accuracy.

        On the Structured Green Band in ZnO Nanowires

        ZnO nanowires have been synthesized by using the vapor evaporation method. The material source was ZnO powder mixed with graphite. The nanowires have the shape of long rods with diameters ranging from 100 to 300 nm and lengths of several tens of micrometers. The photolu- minescence (PL) was measured from 15 K to 300 K. At room temperature, the PL exhibited a relatively strong deep-level emission around 500 nm (green band) and a small UV emission peak at 380 nm (UV band). At low temperatures, the PL spectrum consisted of a group of sharp UV peaks and a smaller green band having the ne structure of a broad multiphonon side band. The ne structure was observed to include doublets at the higher energy side. The temperature dependences of the peak position and of the full width at half maximum height (FWHM) of the PL spectra for green band were investigated.       • A Novel Transcriptomic Biosignature for Tuberculosis Diagnosis, Treatment Monitoring and Outcome Prediction

        Background Transcriptomic biomarkers have been demonstrated as a promising tool for accurate diagnosis and differential diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). However, little is known about their potential in TB treatment monitoring and outcome prediction. Methods We carried out a comprehensive search for available transcriptomics data. The data was used for the discovery of genes that show significant responses during the treatment of TB. Genes with consistent downtrend alterations were determined. Potential candidates were then subjected to external validation. The potential of the biomarker candidates in TB diagnosis and active TB progression risk evaluation was also evaluated. Results The transcriptome of the TB patients was significantly changed during the treatment. There were 371 significantly expressed genes with the monotonic downtrend alteration in the time series comparison. Among these genes, 10 genes were found to be associated with the TB treatment outcome. The 10-gene signature reflected well the downtrend kinetics of TB patients during the course of treatment. It had potential in predicting cured TB patients, when employed as covariates in a logistic regression model. In addition, biomarker candidates clearly differentiated TB patients from non-TB patients and people with latent infection. Conclusions The 10-gene biosignature had potential in TB diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and outcome prediction.
