        Fiber-optic Fabry-Perot Interferometric(FFPI) sensor was embedded in the scaled down reinforced concrete structure and its characteristics were investigated. The intrinsic FFPI consists of two internal mirrors 11 mm apart in the optical fiber and TiO_(2) thin film was sputtered for the mirrors. The sensor showed excellent optical interference characteristics and the phase shift of the sensor output signal was proportional to the external loads applied to the structure. Three sensors at different points were multiplexed by the TDM method, so the deformation to the external loads at each point in the structure could be simultaneously monitored.

        1993년 4월 22-24일에 관측된 황사현상에 대한 종관분석

        The Yellow Sand Events observed over the Korean peninsula during 22-24 April, 1993 were examined using the synoptic data and GMS visible image to identify the transport path of the Yellow Sand and the main factor governing the duration of the Yellow Sand phenomenon. The 850 hPa convergence chart and the 700 hPa trajectory analyses of the air mass laden with Yellow Sand particles suggested that the Yellow Sand particles observed over Korea were probably transported from the Gobi Desert and the Loess Plateau. The duration of the Yellow Sand Events was about 35-40 hours rather shorter than normal as the high pressure system centered near the Mongolia region moved rapidly toward the Yellow Sea, which drove away the Yellow Sand particles over the Korean peninsula toward the Japan Islands, furthermore the low-level stratification of the air mass over the Korean. peninsula showed the unstable atmospheric condition leading to atmospheric diffusion of the particles. The trajectory analyses and the GMS visible image indicated that the long-range transport of the air mass laden with the Yellow Sand particles of this case was more dependent on the 700 hPa air flow than on the 850 hPa air flow.

      • 태백산맥의 지형적인 효과와 관련된 활강풍에 대한 민감도 실험

        The sensitivity study has been performed using ARPS(Advanced Regional Prediction System) for the strong downslope winds case of 11 February 1996 to find out the main factors influencing the strength of the downslope winds near Yeongdong area located downstream of the Taebaek mountains. The main things identified are the effects of the presence of the inversion layer and its variation of height of the layer, the role of wind shear, and the importance of the terrain shape. The sensitivity experiments suggested that the Taebaek mountain ridges with gentle upward slopes and of the winds are not so sensitive to the variation of height of the inversion layer, the inversion layer near the mountain crest was favorable for the generation of strong downslope winds. In addition, strong downslope winds was also simulated without the wind shear in the atmospheric lower layer, suggesting the less importance of the shear to the generation of the strong winds.

      • 3차원 애니메이션을 이용한 가상쇼핑공간의 인터페이스 디자인에 관한 연구

        최근 인터넷의 급격한 보급에 따라 가상 환경하에서의 전자상거래 시장이 급격한 신장세를 보이고 있다. 이에 따라 각 기업에서도 마케팅 수단으로서의 사이버 스페이스의 중요성을 인식하여, 가상공간 상에서의 제품구매 과정과 소비패턴의 분석 및 상품 시뮬레이션 기법의 개발에 집중적인 투자를 하고 있다. 이와 같이 가상공간 상에서의 사이버쇼핑을 위한 잠재 소비자의 수효가 급증함에 따라 보다 많은 소비자들에게 개개인의 감성적 취향에 적합한 제품환경을 제공하기 위한 웹기반하에서의 쇼핑공간의 계획과 인터페이스의 구축이 무엇보다 필요하다. 전자상거래는 실물을 손으로 만져보고 눈으로 확인하는 과정을 통해 이루어지던 기존의 상거래 방식이 아닌 가상의 공간 속에서의 제공되는 인터페이스를 통해서 이루어지는 형식이기 때문에 현실감이 현저히 떨어지는 것이 제약 조건이다. 이러한 제약을 극복하기 위한 지원시스템의 개발여부가 전자상거래의 성공여부를 가름하는 중요한 요인으로 되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 2차원 컴퓨터 그래픽스와 애니메이션 기술을 이용하여 컴퓨터 안에 가상의 쇼핑공간을 구축하고 이 공간을 Walkthrough하는 것에 의해 실제의 쇼핑공간에 보다 근접한 현실감을 느낄 수 있는 전자상거래 지원 시스템을 제안하였다. 연구는 인터넷상에서의 소비자 구매행동을 분석하고, 실제 웹사이트에 구축하기 위해, 디자인 개념 설정, 타겟 설정, 디자인 적용, 업로드 등의 프로세스 구축과 3차원 인터넷 쇼핑몰을 개발하는 순으로 진행하였다.

      • Pressure Swing Adsorption을 이용한 공기의 산소 농축에 관한 연구

        This study is to analyze a pressure swing adsorption process in packed beds with 5A molecular sieve zeolite for production of oxygen rich gas from air. The experimental unit employed consists of two fixed beds and a purge tank and it is operated cyclically. Product oxygen concentration was monitored experimentally at varying adsorption and desorption pressure, degree of recovery and feed flow rate. To determine the optimum cycle time and the bed length, mass transfer zone (MTZ) concept was adapted. It was found that the optimum bed length is about twice the MTZ length under steady state operation. As the cycle is repeated, the oxygen concentration in the product is increased slowly until a-stable concentration is reached. Also, as the adsorption pressure is increased and/or the feed flow rate is decreased, the product oxygen concentration is increased. But the rate of concentration increase became rather small when adsorption pressure is increased to above 3 atm. When the saturated bed is depressurized to a subatmospheric pressure with a vacuum pump, this process can generate up to 89% of oxygen from air but the recovery of oxygen is rather poor.

        지단백과 알부민 및 이들의 변형물질이 메산지움세포 증식에 미치는 영향

        목 적 : 혈청 지단백과 알부민은 그 자체로써 또는 산화나 당화 과정에 의한 변형을 거쳐 사구체 질환을 진행시킬 수 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 그 기전은 분명하지는 않으나 메산지움세포 증식과 관련이 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 저자들은 비교적 간단한 흡광도측정법을 이용하여 지단백과 알부민 및 그들의 변형물질들이 각각 메산지움세포 증식에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 방 법: 정상인의 혈청 지단백을 원심분리 하여 저밀도지단백, 고밀도지단백, 초저밀도지단백을얻고, 산화 저밀도지단백, 당화 저밀도지단백, 그리고 혈청 알부민과 당화 알부민을 각각 농도를 달리하여 배양 중인 인간 메산지움세포에 가한 후 흡광도를 측정함으로써 메산지움세포의 증식정도를 알아보았다. 양성 대조군으로 interleukin-1β를 이용하였다. 결 과: 저밀도지단백은 농도 증가시 50 μg/mL와 100 μg/mL에서 세포의 증식을 보였으며,고밀도지단백과 초저밀도지단백은 농도에 따른 유의한 변화가 없었다. 산화 저밀도지단백은5 μg/mL에서부터 세포의 증식을 초래한 후 10 μg/mL와 25 μg/mL에서도 이를 유지하였다. 당화 저밀도지단백은 농도 증가에 따라 10 μg/mL와 100 μg/mL에서 세포의 증식을 억제하였다. 알부민은 농도 500 μg/mL에서 세포 증식을 억제하다가 고농도(1,000 μg/mL)에서는 영향이 없었으며, 당화 알부민 역시 100 μg/mL의 적은 농도에서는 억제효과를 보였으나 고농도(1,000 μg/mL)에서는 오히려 증식을 일으키는 결과를 보였다. 결 론: 저농도에서 저밀도지단백과 산화 저밀도지단백은 사람 메산지움세포의 증식을 초래하였으며, 당화 저밀도지단백은 증식을 억제하였다. 알부민은 일정농도까지 사람 메산지움세포의 증식을 억제하다가 고농도에서는 영향이 없었으며, 당화 알부민도 일정농도까지 증식 억제 효과가 있다가 고농도에서는 오히려 증식을 초래하는 양상을 보였다. Background : Modified lipoproteins may be involved in nephro- and glomerulosclerosis. Diabetic nephropathy-like lesions have also been induced in a rat model by glycated and glycoxidized albumin. In cultured rat or human mesangial cells, enhanced cell proliferation and production of mesangial matrix in response to lipoproteins and their modified forms have been demonstrated by [3H]-thymidine incorporation and cell counting assays. But these methods are relatively complex and most of them have used only one or two of the lipoprotein, albumin and their modified forms. Methods : We investigated the effects of native and modifed lipoproteins, and albumin on cultured human mesangial cell proliferation using non-radioactive colorimetric method by MTS/PMS assay. Lipoproteins added were low density lipoprotein(LDL), high density lipoprotein(HDL), very low density lipoprotein(VLDL), oxidized LDL(oxidation with copper sulfate in vitro) and glycated LDL and we also used albumin, glycated albumin, and interleukin-1β as a positive control. Results : Interleukin-1β promoted the proliferation of cultured human mesangial cells up to concentration 20 ng/mL. LDL induced the proliferation of mesangial cells in a concentration-dependent manner up to concentration 100 μg/mL. HDL and VLDL had no significant proliferative effect. Oxidized LDL caused the proliferation of mesangial cells at low concentration up to concentration 25 μg/mL. Addition of glycated LDL resulted in a concentrationdependent inhibition of mesangial cells. Albumin and glycated albumin inhibited the proliferation of mesangial cells at low concentration of 100 μg/mL, but cell growth was increased at higher concentrations. Conclusion : We demonstrated the effects of the single and modified proteins on the proliferation of cultured human mesangial cell by relatively simple colorimetric method.       • Risk factors and prognostic impact of venous thromboembolism in Asian patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

        <P>Although the overall risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is high in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), risk identification is limited. The goal of this study was to estimate the incidence, risk factors and prognostic implications of VTE, and to evaluate a genetic link between oncogenes and the risk of VTE in Asian patients with NSCLC. A total of 1,998 consecutive patients with NSCLC were enrolled and analysed retrospectively. Since the effects of therapeutics on VTE development were modified by stage, stratified analyses were performed. When comparing overall survival in terms of VTE development, a propensity score-matching method was adopted to minimise potential confounding. The six-month and two-year cumulative incidences of VTE were 4.2% and 6.4%, respectively. The risk of VTE increased 2.45-fold with each advancing stage in NSCLC (p<0.001). The independent predictors of VTE were advanced age, pneumonectomy and palliative radiotherapy in localised NSCLC and ineligibility for surgery and palliative radiotherapy in locally advanced NSCLC. Adenocarcinoma histology (vs squamous cell) and former/current smoking status were significant predictors of VTE in metastatic NSCLC. A significant association between VTE and decreased survival was observed only among patients with localised NSCLC. EGFR mutations (p=0.170) and ALK rearrangements (p=0.159) were not associated with VTE development in lung adenocarcinoma. In conclusion, the two-year cumulative incidence of VTE is 6.4% in Asian patient with NSCLC. The significant predictors of VTE are different across stages of NSCLC. The prognostic impact of VTE on poor survival was limited to localised NSCLC.</P>

        Decisions for extent of gastric surgery in gastric cancer patients: Younger patients require more attention than the elderly

        <B>Background and Objectives</B><P>There is a prevailing belief that young patients with gastric adenocarcinomas have a more aggressive disease.</P><B>Methods</B><P>We reviewed the prospectively collected database of 753 gastric adenocarcinomas patients who had undergone curative gastrectomy. Clinicopathological factors and the survival rates for each pathological TNM stage were compared between patients younger than 40 years of age and the others.</P><B>Results</B><P>Fifty-four (9.8%) patients were younger than 40 years of age. The overall accuracy of the intra-operative stage was 62.5%; 54.0% in the young patients and 63.5% in older patients (P = 0.006). Intraoperative under-staging was more commonly seen in the younger patients when compared to the older patients. These trends were more prominent in patients with surgical stage I disease. Age proved to be an independent risk factor influencing the accuracy of intraoperative staging using a logistic regression analysis. There was no difference in overall 3-year survival rate between the two age groups for each pathological TNM stage.</P><B>Conclusions</B><P>The present study showed that intra-operative under-staging was more common in young patients with gastric cancer, especially with stage I disease.       • Polymorphisms in Interleukin-1β and Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Genes Are Associated with Kidney Failure in Korean Patients with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus

        Background/Aim: Cytokines play an important role in the pathogenesis of kidney diseases. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of interleukin (IL)-1 cluster genes on diabetic nephropathy in Korean patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods: We investigated -511 C/T polymorphism of IL-1β and tandem repeat polymorphism in intron 2 of IL-1 receptor antagonist in type 2 DM patients with end-stage kidney failure as compared with patients without nephropathy. Results: The IL1B2 allele was found more frequently in patients with kidney failure than in controls (57.4 vs. 46.1%, p<0.05). An excessive homozygous carriage of IL1B2 was found in patients with kidney failure when compared with controls (30.5 vs. 18.3%, p<0.05). The allelic frequency of IL1RN^(*)2 was also higher in cases than in controls without nephropathy (8.4 vs. 2.8%, p<0.05). The carriage rate of IL1RN^(*)2 was significantly associated with an increased risk of kidney failure (15.8 vs. 5.6%; OR 3.19, 95% CI 1.24-8.17). The risk of kidney failure was highest in those carrying both IL1RN^(*)2 and IL1B2 (OR 3.90, 95% CI 1.34-11.40). Conclusion: IL1B2 and IL1RN^(*)2 genotypes of the IL-1 cluster genes are associated with diabetic nephropathy in Korean patients with type 2 DM.
