Competency Gap in the Labor Market: Evidence from Vietnam

LE, Quan Thai Thuong,DOAN, Tam Ho Dan,NGUYEN, Quyen Le Hoang Thuy To,NGUYEN, Doang Thi Phuc Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.9

The relationship between education and work is of the greatest concern to individuals and society because they are the key drivers of growth and development. In the context of Industry 4.0, labor and educators are facing the challenges of big changes in the workplace. How to prepare undergraduate students for the world of employment has become the most important mission of higher education providers. This paper explored the competency gap in the labor market in Vietnam from the perspective of employees who have been dissatisfied with the current status. First, a qualitative method with the Delphi technique was applied to confirm this consensus in an employees' competency model. Then, the satisfaction level for each competency criterion was explored by applying the advance quantitative method, namely, best non-fuzzy performance approach. Lifelong learning was ranked first, followed by creativity and innovation, foreign languages, expertise and digitalization, adaptability, and finally, organizing and managing ability. Critical thinking and problem-solving were perceived to have the biggest gap. The order of competency satisfaction is useful in explaining the mismatch between education quality and labor market demand. The findings provide valuable guidelines for education managers who seek to bridge the competency gap and improve education quality.

Potential to mitigate ammonia emission from slurry by increasing dietary fermentable fiber through inclusion of tropical byproducts in practical diets for growing pigs

        Quan Hai Nguyen,Phung Dinh Le,Channy Chim,Ngoan Duc Le,Veerle Fievez 아세아·태평양축산학회 2019 Animal Bioscience Vol.32 No.4

Objective: Research was conducted to test the effect of including fiber-rich feedstuffs in practical pig diets on nutrient digestibility, nitrogen balance and ammonia emissions from slurry. Methods: Three Vietnamese fiber sources were screened, namely cassava leaf meal (CL), cassava root residue (CR), and tofu by-product (TF). Accordingly, a control diet (Con) with 10% of dietary non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) and three test diets including one of the three fiber-rich feedstuffs to reach 15% of NSP were formulated. All formulated diets had the same level of crude protein (CP), in vitro ileal protein digestible and metabolisable energy, whereas the in vitro hindgut volatile fatty acid (VFA) production of the test diets was 12% to 20% higher than the control diet. Forty growing barrows with initial body weight at 28.6±1.93 kg (mean±standard deviation) were allocated to the four treatments. When pigs reached about 50 kg of body weight, four pigs from each treatment were used for a nitrogen balance trial and ammonia emission assessment, the remaining six pigs continued the second period of the feeding trial. Results: The TF treatment increased fecal VFA by 33% as compared with the control treatment (p = 0.07), suggesting stimulation of the hindgut fermentation. However, urinary N was not significantly reduced or shifted to fecal N, nor was slurry pH decreased. Accordingly, ammonia emissions were not mitigated. CR and CL treatments failed to enhance in vivo hindgut fermentation, as assessed by fecal VFA and purine bases. On the contrary, the reduction of CP digestibility in the CL treatment enhanced ammonia emissions from slurry. Conclusion: Dietary inclusion of cassava and tofu byproducts through an increase of dietary NSP from 10% to 15% might stimulate fecal VFA excretion but this does not guarantee a reduction in ammonia emissions from slurry, while its interaction with protein digestibility even might enhance enhanced ammonia emission.

Biocompatible membrane from the natural rubber-grafted-(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and its metal removal application

        Thu Ha Nguyen,Thi Lan Pham,Anh Quan Cao,Tuan Anh Nguyen,Xuan Minh Vu,Thi My Hanh Le,Van Thuan Le,Seiichi Kawahara,Dai Lam Tran 한국고분자학회 2024 Macromolecular Research Vol.32 No.4

This study describes the preparation and characterization of a green and safe membrane based on a natural polymer for metal adsorption. Natural rubber-grafted-(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) with a special nanostructure was synthesized by graft copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) onto the surface of natural rubber (NR) particles using tert-butylhydroperoxide/tetraethylenepentamine as initiators. Optimal conditions for achieving high conversion and grafting efficiency were identified. Characterization of the as-synthesized samples was performed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, tensile measurement, swelling degree determination, and cytotoxicity testing. The results revealed that HEMA formed a nanoscale matrix surrounding NR particles, which improved the tensile strength, thermal resistance, and swelling degree of the as-prepared samples. Cytotoxicity testing demonstrated that the membrane was safe for human use, as it did not exhibit toxicity to Vero cells at concentrations up to 1024 μg/mL. Furthermore, the membrane displayed a high adsorption capacity toward Fe3+ and was well described by Koble-Corrigan isotherm model and the first–second-order kinetic equation. Moreover, the membrane demonstrated excellent recyclability maintaining its adsorption ability towards Fe3+ ions over five consecutive cycles. Overall, these findings may recommend the NR-HEMA membrane as a promising candidate for metal removal applications.

α-Calcium sulfate hemihydrate bioceramic prepared via salt solution method to enhance bone regenerative efficiency

Dieu Linh Tran,Anh Phuong Nguyen Hong,Ngoc Hoi Nguyen,Ngoc Trinh Huynh,Bao Ha Le Tran,Cam Tu Tran,Minh Dung Truong,Quan Dang Nguyen,박기동,Dai Hai Nguyen 한국공업화학회 2023 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.120 No.-

α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-HH) was synthesized by salt solution methods to prepare a promising biomaterial for bone tissue repair and regeneration. The successful synthesis of α-HH was evaluated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) scanning. The sterility of α-HH before and after irradiation with gamma ray was firstly confirmed by Colonies Forming Units (CFU) counting assay, to target the surgical grade application. In vitro tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, crystal violet (CV) and acridine orange (AO) staining was performed to assess the initial cytotoxicity and cell attachment ability of α-HH. Further in vivo implantation into rabbit distal femoral condyles defect exhibited the ability of salt solution-synthesized α-HH to promote the localization of osteocytes and osteoblasts, which improve the bone tissue repair and regeneration. The findings suggested that α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate synthesized by salt solution method is a potential material that can be used as bone substitutes.

Determinants of Intra-Industry Trade between Vietnam and Countries in TPP

NGUYEN, Ha Minh,QUAN, Binh Quoc Minh,LE, Huong Van,TRAN, Thinh Van Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.1

Intra-industry trade (IIT) has played an important role in international trade of Vietnam as a result of rapid growth of the country. This article investigates the level of IIT between Vietnam and 11 trading partners in Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) over the period 2000-2014. Although there have been a large number of empirical researches contributed to the determinants of IIT, most of them only pay attention on developed countries where the trade flows are similar due to similar demand structure and production technology. Until now, there is no study on intra-industry trade between Vietnam and countries in TPP that Vietnam recently signed a trade agreement in early 2016. IIT is measured by the Grubel-Lloyd index. The index shows that the extent of intra-industry trade between Vietnam and the trading countries is not high due to the level of economic development and the market size. The determinants of IIT are examined using a panel regression model. In the empirical analysis, the results indicate that Vietnam's intra-industry trade is positively correlated with country size, while it is negatively correlated with income dissimilarity, the trade openness, and geographical distance. This study contributes to the new theoretical trade theory on the evidence of developing country's IIT.

Evaluation of Recurrent Neural Network Variants for Person Re-identification

Cuong Vo Le,Nghia Nguyen Tuan,Quan Nguyen Hong,Hyuk-Jae Lee 대한전자공학회 2017 IEIE Transactions on Smart Processing & Computing Vol.6 No.3

Instead of using only spatial features from a single frame for person re-identification, a combination of spatial and temporal factors boosts the performance of the system. A recurrent neural network (RNN) shows its effectiveness in generating highly discriminative sequence-level human representations. In this work, we implement RNN, three Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) network variants, and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) on Caffe deep learning framework, and we then conduct experiments to compare performance in terms of size and accuracy for person reidentification. We propose using GRU for the optimized choice as the experimental results show that the GRU achieves the highest accuracy despite having fewer parameters than the others.

      • Facial landmarks detection for evaluating facial paralysis using a modern active shape model

        Hung Phuoc Truong,Quan Manh Le,Thinh Long Nguyen,Yong-Guk Kim 한국HCI학회 2018 한국HCI학회 학술대회 Vol.2018 No.1

Facial nerve palsy makes patients lose voluntary muscles movement typically at one side of the human face and then it makes them difficult to interact with people using natural facial expressions. Detection of such symptom and evaluation of how serious it is should be a big challenge for standard face models. We propose a new method by which facial landmarks of the palsy face can be detected and measure the degree of the symptom using Discriminative Bayesian Active Shape Model (DB-ASM). Each patient was asked to make a few facial actions, such as eye closing, E-action and O-action with his mouth. We use facial landmarks detection method in measuring displacement ratios reflecting the structure of regions of eyebrows, eyes and mouth, respectively. There are three steps for this: annotating face model, fitting facial landmarks and measuring symmetry indices on the face. The present dataset contains many videos collected from 14 patients and 6 healthy persons. Experimental result suggests that the model with DB-ASM is useful as a facial landmarks predictor for facial paralysis patients.

      • Robust masonry crack segmentation and measurement based on deep learning

        L. Minh Dang,Le Quan Nguyen,Shin Jihye,Hyeonjoon Moon 한국차세대컴퓨팅학회 2022 한국차세대컴퓨팅학회 학술대회 Vol.2022 No.10

Masonry is a common type of construction that uses mortar to bind individual units, such as brick or building stones, together to construct the structure. Even though masonry structures are durable, multiple factors such as the quality of mortar, workmanship, and harsh environment could greatly reduce the structural integrity, leading to defects and even human loss. Thus, it is crucial to perform the maintenance process regularly. Previously, the maintenance relied mainly on inspectors, who inspected the masonry structures to find cracks and determine the seriousness. However, this process is error-prone, costly, and time-consuming. As a result, this study proposes a fully automated masonry crack segmentation framework that robustly identifies various types of masonry cracks. In addition, the length of the segmentation cracks, which has been ignored in previous studies, is also computed.

Study on DPPH Free Radical Scavenging and Lipid Peroxidation Inhibitory Activities of Vietnamese Medicinal Plants

Phan Thi Anh Dao,Nguyen Xuan Hai,Nguyen Trung Nhan,Tran Le Quan,Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai 한국생약학회 2012 Natural Product Sciences Vol.18 No.1

Among 90 Vietnamese medicinal plant extracts investigated for their antioxidant activity by DPPH assay at various concentrations from 10 - 100 ?g/mL, 67 showed an inhibition rate over 50% at 100 ?g/mL; 47 had greater than 50% inhibition at 50 ?g/mL; 17 showed over 50% inhibition at 25 ?g/mL. 8 extracts which exhibited strong inhibitory activity more than 50% inhibition at 10 ?g/mL were further tested for lipid peroxidation inhibition by TBA assay. They displayed activity with IC50 values from 30.6 to 158.9 ?g/mL. Until now, this is the first report on antioxidant activity of the female flower of Borassus flabellifer, and the stem of Combretum latifolium, Embelia ribes, Spatholobus parviflorus, and Tetrastigma erubescens. Fractionations of the EtOAc extract prepared from S. parviflorus led to the isolation of protocatechuic acid (1), ferulic acid (2), epicatechin (3), and gallic acid (4). These compounds showed significant DPPH inhibitory activity with IC50 values from 6.5 to 23.6 ?M.
