Public concern about the adverse health effects of air pollution has grown rapidly in Korea, and there has been increasing demand for research on ways to minimize the health effects of air pollution. Integrating large epidemiological data and air pollution exposure levels can provide a data infrastructure for studying ambient air pollution and its health effects. The Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES), a large population-based study, has been used in many epidemiological studies of chronic diseases. Therefore, KoGES cohort data were linked to air pollution data as a national resource for air pollution studies. Air pollution data were produced using community multiscale air quality modeling with additional adjustment of monitoring data, satellite-derived aerosol optical depth, normalized difference vegetation index, and meteorological data to increase the accuracy and spatial resolution. The modeled air pollution data were linked to the KoGES cohort based on participants’ geocoded residential addresses in grids of 1 km (particulate matter) or 9 km (gaseous air pollutants and meteorological variables). As the integrated data become available to all researchers, this resource is expected to serve as a useful infrastructure for research on the health effects of air pollution.

정연세,Hong Seung-Woo,장현만,Ki Tae-Kyung,Kim Hyoung-Jin,Kim Young Jin,권면,Lee Jinho,Tshoo Kyoungho,Shin Taeksu 한국물리학회 2023 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.82 No.6
RAON (Rare isotope Accelerator complex for ON-line experiments), started by the Rare Isotope Science Project (RISP) in Dec 2011, is the fagship rare isotope accelerator facility in Korea to promote the fundamental science of rare isotopes and the application. The construction of facility buildings and installation of the low-energy superconducting linac (SCL3) including injector system, ISOL (Isotope Separation On-Line) for the rare isotope production, a recoil spectrometer KoBRA, and MR-TOF for the mass measurement system were fnished in 2021. Expecting the completion of the frst phase of the RAON construction project in 2022, the beam commissioning experiments of low-energy superconducting linac (SCL3) and the ISOL system are underway. The status and overview of the RAON accelerator facility are reported in this paper.

The emergences of multi-drug resistant bacteria such as Acinetobacter baumanni have emphasized the necessity of new antibiotics. Peptidyl deformylase (PDF) catalyzes the removal of the formyl group from the N-terminal formylated methionine residue present in all nascent polypeptides in bacteria. In this study, the PDF gene from Acinetobacter baumannii K0420859 was cloned and its protein was overexpressed in E. coli, purified, and crystallized. The purified protein was crystallized using the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion method and the crystal diffracted to 2.4 Å resolution. The crystal belonged to the trigonal space group P3 2 with unit cell parameters of a = b= 39.4 Å and c = 187.9 Å. Two protomers were presented in the asymmetric unit with a corresponding V M of 2.10 Å 3 Da -1 and a solvent content of 41.5%.

We review three examples (an on-chip transmission line resonator [1], a phase-locked loop [2], and an analog-to-digital converter [3]) of design tradeoffs which can in fact be circumvented; the key in each case is that the parameters that seem to trade off with each other are actually separated in time or space. This paper is an attempt to present these designs in such a way that this common approach can hopefully be applied to other circuits. We note reader that this paper is not a new contribution, but a review in which we highlight the common theme from our published works [1-3]. We published a similar paper [4], which, however, used only two examples from [1] and [2]. With the newly added content from [3] in the list of our examples, the present paper offers an expanded scope.

Background: Lipocalin-2 (LCN2), a small glycoprotein, has a pivotal role in diverse bio-logical processes such as cellular proliferation and differentiation. We previously report-ed that LCN2 is implicated in osteoclast formation induced by receptor activator of nu-clear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL) and macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF). In the present study, we used a knockout mouse model to further investigate the role of LCN2 in osteoclast development. Methods: Osteoclastogenesis was assessed using pri-mary bone marrow-derived rnacrophaqes, RANKL and M-CSF signaling was determined by immunoblotting, cell proliferation by bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) enzyme-linked irn-munosorbent assay (ELISA), and apoptosis by cell death detection ELISA. Bone morpho-metric parameters were determined using a micro-computed tomography system. Re-sults: Our results showed that LCN2 deficiency increases tartrate-resistant acid phospha-tase (TRAP)-positive multinucleated osteoclast formation in vitro, a finding that reflects enhanced proliferation and differentiation of osteoclast lineage cells, LCN2 deficiency promotes M-CSF-induced proliferation of bone marrow macrophages (BMMs), osteo-clast precursors, without altering their survival. The accelerated proliferation of LCN2-de-ficient precursors is associated with enhanced expression and activation of the M-CSF receptor, c-Fms. Furthermore, LCN2 deficiency stimulates the induction of c-Fos and nu-clear factor of activated T cells c1 (NFATc1), key transcription factors for osteoclastogene-sis, and promotes RANKL-induced inhibitor of kappa B (IKBa) phosphorylation. Interest-ingly, LCN2 deficiency does not affect basal osteoclast formation in vivo, suggesting that LCN2 might playa role in the enhanced osteoclast development that occurs under some pathological conditions. Conclusions: Our study establishes LCN2 as a negative modula-tor of osteoclast formation, results that are in accordance with our previous findings.

As the types of teacher working in school are getting diverse, the number of contracted teacher is increasing as well. The major purpose of the study is to derive the problems of contract teacher system, especially of term-based teacher and instructor, by analyzing it in terms of collection, management, and evaluation, and finally to explore policy measures. In the process of operating the current contract teacher, such as term-based teacher or instructor, there are some limitations as follows: difficulty in securing and ensuring the fairness of the employment process, lack in guiding personnel affairs and in providing systematic training, and absence in managing job performance. To improve these limitations, the study suggests to find ways for fair recruitment, to build systematic personnel management system, to secure stable status of contract teachers, to provide systematic and continued teacher training, to establish evaluative criteria and standards, and to conduct survey for exalting consumers’ satisfaction of education.

In this Letter, we report Ge p-i-n avalanche photodetectors (APD) with low dark current (sub 1 μA below V(R)=5??V), low operating voltage (avalanche breakdown voltage=8-13??V), and high multiplication gain (440-680) by exploiting a point defect healing method (between 600C and 650C) and optimizing the doping concentration of the intrinsic region (p-type ~101? cm?3). In addition, Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical capacitance voltage analyses were performed to investigate the junction interfaces in more detail. This successful demonstration of Ge p-i-n APD with low dark current, low operating voltage, and high gain is promising for low-power and high-sensitivity Ge PD applications.
