<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We report a novel method to significantly improve the C6H6-sensing performance of Si nanowires through the combination of TeO2 branches and Pd sensitization. The morphological investigation revealed that TeO2 branches were densely formed on the stem nanowires (NWs). The sensor responses of the Pd-functionalized branched NWs exhibited superior sensor responses of 55.19 to C6H6 gas. In particular, Pd nanoparticles enhanced the sensor response to C6H6 gas most efficiently, increasing the sensor response by 173.5%. Possible mechanisms for the sensing of the Pd-decorated branched nanowires will be associated with resistance modulation along the branch TeO2 nanowires (including catalytic Pd effects), at the networked homojunctions between the branch TeO2 nanowires, at the boundaries of the TeO2 nanograins, and at the Pd/TeO2 heterojunctions.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We report a novel method to significantly improve the C6H6-sensing performance of Si nanowires through the combination of TeO2 branches and Pd sensitization. </LI> <LI> Pd nanoparticles enhance the sensor response most efficiently in regard to C6H6 gas. </LI> <LI> The sensor responses of the Pd-functionalized branched nanowires exhibited superior sensor responses of 55.19 to C6H6 gas. </LI> </UL> </P>

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The endoscopic techniques for treating a small rectal neuroendocrine tumor (NET) are performed in most large centers; however, the endoscopic management of this condition is not well established. This study was designed to determine the long-term prognosis of endoscopically resected NET. METHODS: We prospectively studied patients with endoscopically treated rectal NET in Seoul St Mary’s hospital, between January 2000 and June 2010. The long-term outcomes were analyzed in association with the pathological complete resection and resection procedures. RESULTS: Seventy-seven patients (48 men and 29 women; mean age, 52.3 years; range, 23–77 years) were included. The average NET size was 7.0±2.8 mm (range, 3–16 mm). There was no procedure-related complication. En-bloc removal was achieved for all lesions, and the rate of histological complete resection was 75.3% (58/77). Histological complete resection rates were 71.4% (10/14) by conventional endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), 74.1% (43/58) by a two-channel EMR, and 100.0% (5/5) by endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). Among six patients with incomplete histological resection, two underwent additional EMR, two underwent transanal endoscopic microsurgery, and two underwent low anterior section with lymph node dissection. The remaining 13 patients with ‘possible’ remnant NET underwent regular endoscopic surveillance without additional resection. In the latter group, only one patient had local recurrence, detected on regular colonoscopic surveillance, after 56 months and was treated with additional EMR. All of the patients are alive and 98.7% (76/77) of the patients are free from disease during the follow-up periods. CONCLUSION: Endoscopic resection is a safe and effective modality and may potentially be used for the treatment of NETs smaller than 15 mm in diameter, those confined to the submucosal layer, and those without metastasis. Local treatment was believed to be curative in cases with complete histological resection. In addition, this treatment may have an excellent prognosis in patients with ‘possible’ remnant NET.

<P>This paper presents the latest results in the use of soluble materials, such as organic semiconductors (OSCs) and gate-dielectrics, for simplified processing of organic thin film transistors (OTFTs). In this work, the fabrication of a solution-processed OTFT, with 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) and TIPS-pentacene mixed with poly(4-vinylbiphenyl) (PVBP) as the OSC, and propyleneglycolmonomethyletheracetate (PGMEA) as the gate-dielectric, is described. From electrical measurements, we observed exemplary I-V characteristics for these TFTs. Device performance characteristics have been obtained, including the charge carrier mobility (micro) of 1.47 x 10(-2) cm2Ns, threshold voltage (V(T)) of -11.36 V, current on/off ratio (I(ON/OFF)) of 1.08 x 10(4), sub-threshold swing (SS) of 2.13 V/decade for an OTFT with PVBP blended TIPS-pentacene and micro of 1.39 x 10(-4) cm2/Vs, V(T) of 0.7 V, I(ON/OFF) of 1.64 x 10(3), SS of 4.21 V/decade for an OTFT without polymer binder, individually.</P>

Alkaline Weight Reduction Monitoring of Sea-island Type Polyarnide Microfiber Fabrics
Kwon Yoon-Jung,Koh Joon-Seok,Oh Myung-Joon,Kim Sung-Dong The Korean Fiber Society 2006 Fibers and polymers Vol.7 No.1
The alkaline dissolution behavior of sea-island type polyarnide microfibers were successfully monitored using a cationic dye staining method. Weight reduction behavior of the alkali-treated microfiber fabrics and the treated fabrics stained with cationic dye were investigated in a comparative manner. The termination of dissolution monitored by both methods was also confirmed by scanning electron microscopy.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Complex metal oxides such as functionalized branched nanowires (NWs) are a new category of nanocomposites with unique properties for gas sensing applications. In the present work, we studied the gas sensing properties of Cr2O3-functionalized ZnO-branched SnO2 NWs, inspired by their high surface area and numerous resistive points. These NWs were studied and compared with pristine SnO2 NWs and ZnO-branched SnO2 NWs. To prepare the functionalized NWs, ZnO-branched SnO2 NWs were sputter-coated with a Cr layer and then annealed at 500°C to produce isolated Cr2O3 NPs on the ZnO branches. Results of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and lattice-resolved transmission electron microscopy collectively showed that Cr2O3-functionalized ZnO-branched SnO2 NWs were successfully formed. Cr2O3 functionalization was found to greatly improve the sensors’ response to NO2 gas. Furthermore, the sensors’ good selectivity was demonstrated by testing them in the presence of various interfering gases. The underlying gas sensing mechanisms are discussed herein in detail. We believe that the Cr2O3-functionalized ZnO-branched SnO2 NWs reported herein are promising sensors for the highly sensitive and selective detection of NO2 gas.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Cr2O3-functionalized ZnO-branched SnO2 nanowires were successfully prepared. </LI> <LI> Cr2O3 functionalization was found to greatly improve the sensors’ response to NO2 gas. </LI> <LI> Underlying gas sensing mechanisms are discussed in terms of the Cr2O3 spillover effect, the formation of Cr2O3/ZnO heterojunctions, and the creation of defects. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Curvature and Hand Comfort for Unimanual Operations
( Sung Hee Ahn ),( Sanghyun Kwon ),( Yu Shin Lee ),( Myung Hwan Yun ) 한국감성과학회 2014 춘계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.-
To design handheld devices, physical comfort is one of the most crucial requirements. Recently, curved handheld touchscreens were released for enhancing comfort, but the effect has not been proved yet. Regarding user behavior with the device, it has been observed that 1/3 of user population of smartphone operate the device unimanully in a previous research. This study aimed to verify the effect of curvature on comfort when using handheld touchscreen devices. Comfort level was measured employing both the subjective rating and EMG methods. Three mock-ups of handheld touchscreen device with different curvatures were utilized. One was flat device and the others had curvatures of 400R and 100R. An experiment was conducted on tapping, typing and dragging tasks. The results indicated that curvature of the handheld touchscreen devices did not affect muscle activities, but subjective comfort level. Overall, this study suggests that there may be other design elements more important than curvature of handheld touchscreen determining comfort of touch screen use.
