        We developed an occupational therapy tool to maintain and improve the cognitive function for the elderly who have senile dementia. 86 elderly people took a mininal mental state examination (MMSE) for the therapy to perform the occupational therapy, and divided into three groups based on avarage ages and MMSE values. The occupational therapy was treated three times per week for 10 weeks. The results showed that there were significant differences in the performing scores before and after the treatment ; the scores for the occupational therapy were increased significantly (p<0.001) and the performing time was shortened from 6-week throughout 10-week regimen. This study was to examine the effect on the activity of antioxidant enzymes by occupational therapy. The activities of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, Glutathion-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were increased to the normal standard by the occupational therapy for the elderly having dementia. The recovery of activities of antioxidant enzymes was obvious in severe demented elderly compared to those in normal or mild demented elderly. These results suggest that the occupational therapy had an beneficial effect on the protection against the oxidative stress especially for severe demented elderly, and the occupational tool need to be modified so as to improve the protection against the oxidative stress for normal and/or mild demented elderly.

      • 1920년대 여성운동과 단발에 관하여

        Women's hair style expresses individual women's aesthetic sense, way of thinking and consciousness and further represents social aspects. It provides information about situations of a relevant society and times and values members of the society have. Hair style was also used as a measure for evaluating behaviors of women who received modern education in the period of Chosun's modernization, collectively called 'the new woman'. The new woman who were educated with modern ideas, started women's movements with Western ideas based in order to resolve Japanese colonial rule. Thus the purpose of this study is to determine correlations between such women as participants of the movements and their short-hair(斷髮). Results of the study can be described as follows. First, changes in the view of woman brought by modern education for women led to changes in women's social position and roles, forming a new group of women, collectively called 'the new woman', who took modern education and modern ideas in the 1920s. Women's movements made by group during Japanese colonial rule were different among them according to whether they were based on liberalism or socialism. Second, correlations between feminists and their short-hair(斷髮) varied in accordance with characteristics of women's movements. For liberal feminists, short-hair(斷髮) represented love and faithfulness and at the same time symbolized advanced social position of women and innovated consciousness of life. As far as social feminists were concerned, short-hair(斷髮) was a means of showing their strong wills to achieving women's emancipation, obtaining women's rights and escaping from conventional systems suppressing women. Those feminists returned to long-hair(長髮) in the late 1920s as their short-hair(斷髮) was not socially accepted and supported by old women. This suggests the limit of women's movements at that time. Through the study, this researcher could find that changes in hair style were not just the expression of desires for beauty, but also the clue with which changes in social consciousness could be determined.

        Solar energy converters were used to convert the electrical energy from the solar arrays to a stable and reliable power source. The object of this paper is to analyze and design DC/DC converters of different types in a solar energy system in order to investigate the performance of the converters. A simple method which combines a discrete time control and a PI compensator is used to track the maximum power point of the solar array. The system is kept to operate close to MPPT's thus the maximum possible power transfer from the solar array is achieved. Experimental tests were carried out for buck, boost and buck-boost converters using a simple maximum power point tracking algorithm.

        The yolk protein of spotted flounder, Verasper variegatus was purified by precipitation with cold distilled water, followed by Sepharose CL-6B column chromatography. The purified protein was identified as vitellin by Ouchterlony's immunodiffusion test and immunoelectrophoresis. The purified vitellin from ovarian crude extracts has same antigenic determinants with the female specific serum protein, vitellogenin. The molecular weight of purified vitellin was estimated about 550kD by gel filtration. The vitellin was composed of three major subunits with molecular weight of about 108, 85 and 31 kD, and two minor subunits. The vitellin was identified by western blot analysis using anti-vitellin antibody.

        황색포도상구균 신속 검출용 간이 진단키트

        This study was performed to develop a rapid test kit for pathogenic Staphylococcus in various samples. The rapid detection kit has been fabricated based on nitrocellulose lateral-flow strip. Colloidal gold and Staphylococcus antibodies were used as a tag and a receptor, respectively. Manually spotted Staphylococcus antibody and anti-mouse antibody on the surface of nitrocellulose membrane were used as test and control lines, espectively. Feasibility of the rapid kit to detect Staphylococcus aureus in samples were evaluated. The intensity of the color of the tes line started to increase with the samples in which higher concentration of the cells were contained. The sensitivity of the sensor was 106 cfu/mL Staphylococcus spiked in PBS. Also, the rapid test kit could detect 105 cfu/mL of Staphylococcus in chicken meat extract.

        Evaluation of the Immune Response Following Exposure of Mice to Bisphenol A: Induction of Th1 Cytokine and Prolactin by BPA Exposure in the Mouse Spleen Cells

        Bisphenol A [2, 2 bis (4-hydoxyphenyl) propane; BPA] is a widely used endocrine disruptors and has estrogenic: activities. Although interests on biological effect of BPA are rising, evidences of its effect on immune system are lacking. We investigated that the effect of BPA on immune parameters to postulate the mechanism, and BPA interruptions between neuroendocrine and immune system. BPA was administrated to mice by p.o. (as a drinking water) dose on 0.015, 1.5 and 30 mg/ml for 4 weeks. The BPA treatment did not result in any change in body weight, spleen weight and distribution of lymphocyte subpopulation collected from spleen. BPA induced prolactin production in spleen, and exposure of SPA increased the activity of splenocyte proliferation in response to Con A (p<0.001). The production of a strong Th-1 type cytokine ($IFN-{\gamma}$) was induced while Th-2 type (IL-4) was suppressed by SPA treatment. These were consistent with RT-PCR results of transcription factor GATA-3 and IRF-1. These findings suggested that stimulation of prolactin production by estrogenic effects of SPA would affect cytokine profiles, and lead to imbalanced cellular immune response. In addition, we could speculate that prolactin and cytokine is important mediator involved in network between neuroendocrine and immune system by BPA.

        Original Article ; Blepharoptosis Repair through the Small Orbital Septum Incision and Minimal Dissection Technique in Patients with Coexisting Dermatochalasis

        Purpose: To describe a modified surgical technique for blepharoptosis repair through a small orbital septum incision and minimal dissection, along with the results obtained in patients with coexisting dermatochalasis. Methods: A retrospective chart review included 33 patients (52 eyelids) with blepharoptosis coexisting with dermatochalasis, surgically corrected through a small orbital septum incision and minimal dissection after redundant upper lid skin excision, by placing a single fixation suture between the levator aponeurosis and the tarsal plate. Outcome measures included the pre- and postoperative marginal reflex distances (MRD1), eyelid contour, post-operative complications, and need for reoperation. Results: The pre- and postoperative MRD1 averaged 1.1 ± 0.8 mm and 2.8 ± 1.1 mm, respectively. Of the 33 patients, 9 patients (9 eyelids) underwent surgery on one eyelid for unilateral blepharoptosis and dermatochalasis (Group I), 5 patients (5 eyelids) underwent a simple skin excision blepharoplasty of the contralateral eyelid (Group II), and 19 patients (38 eyelids) underwent bilateral blepharoptosis and dermatochalasis repair (Group III). Of the 14 eyelids that underwent unilateral ptosis repair (Groups I and II), 12 eyelids (85.7%) showed less than a 1-mm difference from the contralateral eyelid. Of the 38 eyelids that underwent bilateral ptosis repair (Group III), 27 eyelids (71.1%), 5 eyelids (13.1%), and 6 eyelids (15.8%) had excellent, good, and poor outcomes, respectively. Overall, 44 eyelids (84.6%) out of a total of 52 eyelids had successful outcomes; the remaining 8 eyelids demonstrated unsatisfactory eyelid contour was corrected by an additional surgery. Conclusions: Blepharoptosis repair through a small orbital septum incision and minimal dissection can be considered an efficient technique in patients with ptosis and dermatochalasis.

      • 흡수식 시스템 적용을 위한 이성분 나노에멀젼(O/S)의 열물성 측정 실험

        이성분 나노에멀젼이란, 흡수식 시스템의 열 및 물질전달 향상을 위해 나노 크기의 오일액적 입자를 작동 유체인 H₂O/LiBr에 분산시킨 것을 의미한다. 본 연구에서는 DLS 법을 이용한 입도 측정과 비정상 열선법을 이용한 열전도도 측정 연구를 수행하였다. 실험 결과 단성분 나노 에멀젼(Oil in water nanoemulsion)의 경우 0.1 vol %의 오일이 분산되었을 때 약 6.4%, 이성분 나노에멀젼(Oil in solution nanoemulsion)의 경우 30 wt% H₂O/LiB의 모유체에 1 vol%의 오일이 분산되었을 때 약 3.6%의 유효열전도도 상승을 나타내었다. 따라서 모유체 보다 낮은 열전도도를 갖는 오일을 나노 크기로 분산시킴으로써 이성분 나노에멀젼의 열전도도를 상승시킬 수 있었다. Binary nanoemulsions, nano-sized oil-droplet suspensions in a binary solution (H₂O/LiBr), are developed to enhance the heat and mass transfer performance of absorption refrigeration systems. In this study, the droplet size and the thermal conductivity of binary nanoemulsions are measured by the DLS method and the transient hot-wire method, respectively. It is found that the measured thermal conductivity of the oil-in-water nanoemulsion enhances up to 6.4 % at 0.1 vol% of oil, and the binary nanoemulsion enhances up to 3.6 % at 1.0 vol % of oil in 30 wt % H₂O/LiBr compared with the estimated one from the Maxwell's model. Therefore it is proposed that the thermal conductivity of the binary nanoemulsion could be enhanced by adding nano-sized droplets of n-decane oil, which has a lower thermal conductivity than that of the base fluid.

      • 흡수식 시스템 적용을 위한 이성분 나노 에멀젼의 입도 및 열전도도 측정

        Binary nanoemulsions, oil-droplet suspensions in binary solution, are developed to enhance the heat and mass transfer performance of absorption system. In this study the formation and stability of n-decane in H2O/LiBr nanoemulsions produced by using C12E4 and TWEEN20. To stabilize the nanoemulsions in a strong electrolyte, gum arabic is used as a steric stabilizer. The droplet size and the thermal conductivity of O/S nanoemulsions are measured by the dynamic light scattering method and the transient hot-wire method, respectively. It is found that the thermal conductivity of O/S nanoemulsion is inversely proportional to the emulsion size in the case of 1 vol % of oil in 10, 30, 50 wt % H₂O/LiBr. The thermal conductivity of O/S nanoemulsion increases up to 2.36 % for the 0.1 vol% of oil emulsion in 30 wt% of H2O/LiBr.
