Effect of Lactobacillus fermentum MG590 on Alcohol Metabolism and Liver Function in Rats

<B>BACKGROUND:</B><P>The radiosurgical treatment of vestibular schwannomas in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is controversial. The authors investigated the radiologically proven tumor control rate after gamma knife radiosurgery. The factors that affect tumor control and serviceable hearing preservation were analyzed.</P><B>METHODS:</B><P>Thirty-six lesions in 30 patients were included. The median lengths of the clinical and radiologic follow-ups were 48.5 months and 36.5 months, respectively. The median tumor volume was 3.2 cm<SUP>3</SUP>. The mean marginal dose was 12.1 grays (Gy) (range, 8–14 Gy) at an isodose line of 50%±0.6%. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards model were used for the statistical analyses.</P><B>RESULTS:</B><P>The actuarial tumor control rate was 81%, 74%, and 66%, respectively, in the first, second, and fifth years. Five tumors required a salvage surgery because of tumor control failure. A low marginal dose and a young age at radiosurgery were associated with poor tumor control. Of the 16 tumors with which ipsilateral hearing was serviceable, the actuarial serviceable hearing preservation rates were 50%, 45%, and 33%, respectively, in the first, second, and fifth years. Better ipsilateral hearing (Gardner-Robertson grade 1, compared with grade 2) at the time of radiosurgery was associated with significantly greater serviceable hearing preservation.</P><B>CONCLUSIONS:</B><P>Gamma knife radiosurgery for vestibular schwannomas in NF2 patients provided 5-year tumor control in approximately two-thirds of patients and preserved serviceable hearing in approximately one-third. The rates of other cranial nerve deficits were low, and no secondary malignancy was observed. Radiosurgery should be included in treatment options for NF2 patients. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between father absence and children's sex-role stereotypes. The subjects of this study were 36 father absent children and 40 father present boys and girls totaling 76 children. They were 13 years of age. The instrument used for this study was a questionnaire based on The Bem Sex-role Inventory. The data of the present study were analyzed by the statistical method of t-test. The results showed a significant difference between the two groups on some items: 1) on the boys' masculinity scale, father present boys had higher scores that father absent boys on “sincere” and “faithful”; 2) on the boys' feminity scale, father present boys had higher scores than father absent boys on “help a person” but father absent boys had higher scores than father present boys on “compel”; 3) on the girl's masculinity scale, father present girls had higher scores than father absent girls on “help a person” but father absent girls had higher scores than father present girls on “happy” and “talk softly”; 4) on the girls, feminity scale, father present girls had higher scores than father absent girls on “concede”, “friendly”, “sensitive”, and “gentle”. The results were discussed in terms of proverty, the lack of sex-role model caused by father absence, and mother's change in child rearing attitude.

This study was carried out to survey the levels of mercury in root vegetables and assess dietary exposure / risk to the Korean population health. Various samples including Panax ginseng C.A mayer, Codonopsis lanceolata, and Platycodon granditloum were collected from markets across Korea. The concentrations of mercury were measured using automatic mercury analyzer. The analytical and sampling methods in this study were full validated. The mercury content in root vegetables was determined below 100 μg/kg (maximum residue of mercury for salt established in Korea). For risk assessment, probable daily intake was calculated and compared with PTWI (tolerable weekly intake) established by JECFA. The level of overall exposure to mercury for Korean through root vegetables was below 1% of the recommended JECFA levels, indicating of little possibility of risk. Whereas, MFDS was conducted to assess the dietary exposure to mercury from food intake, based on several reports regarding mercury published by MFDS in the 2000s. The mean and 95th percentile for exposure to dietary mercury were 4.29 and 12.48 μg/day, corresponding to 13.6% and 39.7% of PTWI, respectively.
Robotic single-port transumbilical total hysterectomy: a pilot study

<P><B>Objective</B></P><P>To evaluate the feasibility of robotic single-port transumbilical total hysterectomy using a home-made surgical glove port system.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent robotic single-port transumbilical total hysterectomy between January 2010 and July 2010. All surgical procedures were performed through a single 3-4-cm umbilical incision, with a multi-channel system consisting of a wound retractor, a surgical glove, and two 10/12-mm and two 8 mm trocars.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Seven patients were treated with robotic single-port transumbilical total hysterectomy. Procedures included total hysterectomy due to benign gynecological disease (n=5), extra-fascial hysterectomy due to carcinoma <I>in situ</I> of the cervix (n=1), and radical hysterectomy due to cervical cancer IB1 (n=1). The median total operative time was 109 minutes (range, 105 to 311 minutes), the median blood loss was 100 mL (range, 10 to 750 mL), and the median weight of the resected uteri was 200 g (range, 40 to 310 g). One benign case was converted to 3-port robotic surgery due to severe pelvic adhesions, and no post-operative complications occurred.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Robotic single-port transumbilical total hysterectomy is technically feasible in selected patients with gynecological disease. Robotics may enhance surgical skills during single-port transumbilical hysterectomy, especially in patients with gynecologic cancers.</P>

<P>The molecular orientation of antibody layers formed on separate solid matrices (<I>e.g.</I>, gold-coated glass substrate) was characterized by means of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) in static mode. For comparison, three different antibody species, IgG, F(ab′)<SUB>2</SUB>, and Fab, were prepared, biotinylated in random and site-directed fashions, and immobilized on distinct streptavidin-coated surfaces. ToF-SIMS analyses of each antibody layer revealed that the secondary ion intensity peaks measured at the mass-to-charge (<I>m</I>/<I>z</I>) ratio 253, 325, and 647 were unique to the site-directly immobilized antibodies. The ions in the three peaks were detected neither from the streptavidin layer nor from the randomly prepared antibody, indicating that the insolubilized antibody layers constructed in the two different manners had distinct molecular arrangements. The antibody preparations were further tested for their binding characteristics in sandwich-type immunoassays, which showed that the site-directed antibodies consistently enhanced the detection capability comparing to those randomly prepared.
