A Three-Year Autoregressive Cross-Lagged Panel Analysis on Nicotine Dependence and Average Smoking

        송태민,안지영,Laura L. Hayman,김계수,이주열,장해란 대한의료정보학회 2012 Healthcare Informatics Research Vol.18 No.2

Objectives: Previous studies have been limited to the use of cross sectional data to identify the relationships between nicotine dependence and smoking. Therefore, it is difficult to determine a causal direction between the two variables. The purposes of this study were to 1) test whether nicotine dependence or average smoking was a more influential factor in smoking cessation; and 2) propose effective ways to quit smoking as determined by the causal relations identified. Methods: This study used a panel dataset from the central computerized management systems of community-based smoking cessation programs in Korea. Data were stored from July 16, 2005 to July 15, 2008. 711,862 smokers were registered and re-registered for the programs during the period. 860 of those who were retained in the programs for three years were finally included in the dataset. To measure nicotine dependence, this study used a revised Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence. To examine the relationship between nicotine dependence and average smoking, an autoregressive cross-lagged model was explored in the study. Results: The results indicate that 1) nicotine dependence and average smoking were stable over time; 2) the impact of nicotine dependence on average smoking was significant and vice versa; and 3) the impact of average smoking on nicotine dependence is greater than the impact of nicotine dependence on average smoking. Conclusions: These results support the existing data obtained from previous research. Collectively, reducing the amount of smoking in order to decrease nicotine dependence is important for evidence-based policy making for smoking cessation.

The Association Between Perceived Stress and Quality of Life in University Students: The Parallel Mediating Role of Depressive Symptoms and Health-Promoting Behaviors

        서은지,안정아,Laura L. Hayman,김춘자 한국간호과학회 2018 Asian Nursing Research Vol.12 No.3

Purpose: This study examined whether depressive symptoms and health-promoting lifestyle behaviors mediate the association between perceived stress and quality of life (QoL) in university students. Methods: Using a cross-sectional survey, Korean university students (N = 187, Mage = 23.97 years; 54.0% Woman) completed structured questionnaires with psychometric adequacy. A parallel multiple mediation model was used to test the mediating effect of depressive symptoms and health-promoting lifestyle behaviors on the relationship between perceived stress and QoL. Results: Total effect of perceived stress, depressive symptoms, and health-promoting lifestyle behaviors on QoL was -.55. Of these, total indirect mediating effect was -.50, whereas direct effect was only -.05 in the parallel mediation model. In particular, depressive symptoms (indirect effect = -.32) and healthpromoting lifestyle behaviors (indirect effect = -.18) completely mediated the relationship between perceived stress and QoL. Conclusion: The results suggest that effective strategies primarily focusing on improving depressive symptoms along with health behaviors are needed to decrease the negative effect of perceived stress on QoL.

Factors Affecting Start-up Behavior and Start-up Performance During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Indonesia

Cristoper Allen PRAMONO,Adler Haymans MANURUNG,Pantri HERIYATI,Wibowo KOSASIH 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.4

The worldwide spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a severe impact on the global economy. The COVID-19 pandemic has spread with alarming speed and. The economic damage is already evident and represents the largest economic shock the world has experienced in decades. This study analyzes the factors that influence behavior and its impact on start-up performance, through technology capabilities, technology development, organizational structure characteristics, and leadership technology. The mixed-method was used in this research to be applied to start-up companies in Jabodetabek with a population of 522 start-ups. Then the sample was selected through purposive sampling technique to obtain a sample of 187 start-ups. Primary data was collected through a questionnaire, then statistical analysis was carried out using Partial Least Square. There are ten variables used in the model as measured by the questionnaire. The results showed that the four factors (agility, entrepreneurship capability, business transformation, and opportunity) significantly influence start-up behavior. The results showed that the start-up behavior significantly influenced technology capabilities, technology development, organizational structure characteristics, and leadership technology. This study also found that start-up behavior had the greatest influence on organizational structure characteristics, partially affect start-up performance, but leadership technology does not have a significant effect on start-up performance.

The Influence of Risk Perception on Destination Attachment and Voluntourism Behavior: Empirical Evidence from Indonesia

PANGARIBUAN, Christian Haposan,MANURUNG, Adler Haymans,SAROSO, Hardijanto,RUSMANTO, Toto Korea Distribution Science Association 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.3

Alternative forms of travel have recently been delivering rewarding experiences and promising sustainable development for the tourism sector. However, it also depends on the uncertainties, consequences, and emotional connection with the destination. So far, the scholars have done limited empirical studies on volunteer tourism in Bali. Thus, this study tries to measure volunteer tourists' behavior by understanding the relationship between destination attachment, risk perception, and voluntourism behavior. Therefore, a study on the inclusivity of tourists' attachment to a particular place and perceived risks in volunteer tourism is an essential need to sustain the tourism industry. Data was analyzed using Partial Least Squares with smartPLS software. This study is based on a sample of ninety-three tourists of generation Z in Bali, Indonesia. Both outer model and inner model evaluation were conducted to ensure the robustness of the proposed model. The findings showed that destination attachment does have a direct and significant effect on voluntourism behavior. As expected, we also find that perceived risk has a significant moderating role on the relationship. Hence, greater efforts are needed to improve the image of the place by highlighting the characteristics of the locations. At the same time, it is necessary to put considerable effort to alleviate unfavorable conditions by creating safe environment surrounding the destination.

Psychological and Social Factors Affecting Internet Searches on Suicide in Korea: A Big Data Analysis of Google Search Trends

        송태민,안지영,송주영,Laura L. Hayman,우종민 연세대학교의과대학 2014 Yonsei medical journal Vol.55 No.1

Purpose: The average mortality rate for death by suicide among OECD countries is 12.8 per 100000, and 33.5 for Korea. The present study analyzed big data extracted from Google to identify factors related to searches on suicide in Korea. Materials and Methods: Google search trends for the search words of suicide, stress, exercise, and drinking were obtained for 2004-2010. Analyzing data by month, the relationship between the actual number of suicides and search words per year was examined using multi-level models. Results: Both suicide rates and Google searches on suicide in Korea increased since 2007. An unconditional slope model indicated stress and suicide-related searches were positively related. A conditional model showed that factors associated with suicide by year directly affected suicide-related searches. The interaction between stress-related searches and the actual number of suicides was significant. Conclusion: A positive relationship between stress- and suicide-related searches further confirmed that stress affects suicide. Taken together and viewed in context of the big data analysis, our results point to the need for a tailored prevention program. Real-time big data can be of use in indicating increases in suicidality when search words such as stress and suicide generate greater numbers of hits on portals and social network sites.

Stock Selection Model in the Formation of an Optimal and Adaptable Portfolio in the Indonesian Capital Market

SETIADI, Hendri,ACHSANI, Noer Azam,MANURUNG, Adler Haymans,IRAWAN, Tony Korea Distribution Science Association 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.9

This study aims to determine the factors that can influence investors in selecting stocks in the Indonesian capital market to establish an optimal portfolio, and find phenomena that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic so that buying interest / the number of investors increased in the Indonesian capital market. This study collection technique uses primary data obtained from the survey questionnaire and secondary data which is market data, stock price movement data sourced from the Indonesia Stock Exchange, Indonesian Central Securities Depository, and Bank Indonesia, as well as empirical literature on behavior finance, investment decision, and interest in buying stock. The method used in this research is the survey questionnaire analysis with the SEM (statistical approach). The results of the analysis using SEM show that investor behavior influences the stock-buying interest, investor behavior, and the stock-buying interest influences investor decision-making. However, risk management does not influence investor-decision making. This occurs when the investigator's psychological capacity produces more decision information by decreasing all potential biases, allowing the best stock selection model to be selected. When the investigator's psychological capacity creates more decision information by reducing biases, the optimum stock selection model can be chosen.

A model for characterizing the frequency-dependent variation in sensitivity with temperature of underwater acoustic transducers from historical calibration data

        Nam, G H,Cox, M G,Harris, P M,Robinson, S P,Hayman, G,Beamiss, G A,Esward, T J,Smith, I M IOP Pub 2007 Measurement science & technology Vol.18 No.5

The performance of underwater electroacoustic transducers often depends on water temperature and, for accurate calibrations, it is necessary to take account of this influence on measurement data. Doing so is particularly important for open-water calibration facilities where the environmental conditions cannot be controlled and seasonal variations in temperature can contribute significant measurement uncertainty. This paper describes the characterization of the sensitivity of underwater electroacoustic transducers in terms of their variation with water temperature. A model containing adjustable parameters is developed for providing frequency-dependent temperature coefficients whose use enables measurement data to be corrected for temperature. Estimates of these coefficients are determined by applying the model to the time history of measurement data obtained over a period of several years. The influence of seasonal temperature variation can then be separated from the slow temporal drift in the transducer sensitivity. The uncertainties associated with the corrected sensitivity values are evaluated.
