Helicobacter pylori infection was the cause of chronic gastritis, duodenal ulcer and gastric MALT lymphoma. The eradication rates of H. pylori using antibiotics are around 80%. Lactobacilli have been demonstrated to have in vivo and in vitro inhibitory effects on H. pylori infection. We aimed to evaluate the inhibitory effect of L. lactis CBT-8 and its extract on H. pylori in human stomach. Thirty-five H. pylori-infected volunteers(30-49 yr)were randomized into two groups which were treated with L. lactis CBT-8 and its extract(Group A n=17) or milk containing L. lactis CBT-8(Group B, n=18). They underwent 13C-urea breath tests before and after treatment. The DOB30 of group A(n=14) was decreased 41.0% after treatment(26.0±4.9 before, 15.3±2.1 after treatment)(p<0.05). the DOB30 of group B(n=13) was decreased 22.3% after treatment(22.0±2.2 before, 17.1±1.7 after treatment)(p<0.05). In conclusion, L. lactis CBT-8 was effective in suppressing H. pylori infection in human stomach.

Nowadays many products using nano-technology have been released and nano-technology would be more prospected in all kinds of industries especially cosmetic manufacturing and ingredient fields. In cosmetics, the saturated lecithin, one of the main surfactants to make liposome, has been used for its stability but it has been substituting by unsaturated lecithin which has excellent skin affinity and penetration. So we studied to develop nano-liposome below 50㎚ with unsaturated lecithin. To make stable nano-liposome, many factors including solvent like propylene glycol, pH balance, homogenizing pressure and liposome stabilizer like surfactant are important especially stearate series surfactants have positive effect in liposome size and long term stability. But in liposome with saturated lecithin, surfactant has negative effect and appropriate amount of oil should be used to be stable. So we could conclude that unsaturated lecithin is suitable than saturated lecithin to make nano-liposome.

Hypereosinophilic syndrome is characterized by persistent blood eosinophilia of 1,500/ul or more in the absence of known causes and multiorgan dysfunction by eosinophil-related tissue damage. In Korea, some cases of hypereosinophilic syndrome with hepatic involvement have been described with prolonged benign clinical courses. Most of them were diffuse or multifocal lesions in imaging studies, and a few case presenting as a single mass has been described. Here we report a case of hypereosinophilic syndrome with hepatic involvement in a 65-year-old man who presented with multifocal mass lesions. By abdominal US and CT scan, multiple, ill-defined nodules were detected in throughout the liver. Liver biopsy revealed severe eosinophilic hepatitis, suggestive of hypereosinophilic syndrome. Hepatic mass lesions improved after steroid administration for several weeks.
The antimicrobial activity of as-prepared silver-loaded phosphate glasses and zirconium phosphate

The antimicrobial activities of silver-loaded zirconium phosphate (JDG) and silver-loaded phosphate glasses (ZZB) against Escherichia coli were studied. Although the silver content in JDG was higher than that in ZZB, ZZB suspensions showed better antimicrobial property than JDG suspensions, especially at low concentrations. The antimicrobial activity was analyzed using minimum inhibitory concentrations, bacterial inhibition ring tests, and detection of silver ions in the suspensions. Furthermore, the amounts of silver ions in suspensions with/without bacterial cells were analyzed. Results revealed that only a portion of released silver ions could be adsorbed by E. coli cells, which are critical to cell death. The damaged microstructures of E. coli cells observed by transmission electron microscopy may further prove that the adsorbed silver ions play an important role in the antimicrobial process.

<P>A rapid biological synthesis of multifunctional gold nanoparticle (AuNp) and monodisperse silver nanoparticle (AgNp) was achieved by an aqueous extract of black <I>Panax ginseng</I> Meyer root. The physicochemical transformation into black ginseng (BG) greatly enhanced the pharmacological activities of white ginseng and its minor ginsenoside content. The optimal temperature conditions and kinetics of bioreduction were investigated. Formation of BG-AuNps and BG-AgNps was verified by ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry at 548 and 412 nm, respectively. The biosynthesized BG-AgNps were spherical and monodisperse with narrow distribution, while BG-AuNps were icosahedral-shaped and moderately polydisperse. Synthesized nanoparticles exhibited long-term stability in buffers of pH 7.0–8.0 and biological media (5% bovine serum albumin) at an ambient temperature and at 37°C. BG-AgNps showed effective antibacterial activity against <I>Escherichia coli</I> and <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I>. BG-AuNps and BG-AgNps demonstrated increased scavenging activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radicals. In addition, BG-AuNps and BG-AgNps were nontoxic to HaCaT and MCF-7 cells; the latter showed no cytotoxicity at concentrations lower than 10 µg/mL. At higher concentrations, BG-AgNps exhibited apparent apoptotic activity in MCF-7 breast cancer cell line through reactive oxygen species generation and nuclear fragmentation.</P>
Molecular discrimination of Panax ginseng cultivar K-1 using pathogenesis-related protein 5 gene
Wang, Hongtao,Xu, Fengjiao,Wang, Xinqi,Kwon, Woo-Saeng,Yang, Deok-Chun The Korean Society of Ginseng 2019 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.43 No.3
Background: The mixed-cultivation of different Panax ginseng cultivars can cause adverse effects on stability of yield and quality. K-1 is a superior cultivar with good root shape and stronger disease resistance. DNA markers mined from functional genes are clearly desirable for K-1, as they may associate with major traits and can be used for marker-assisted selection to maintain the high quality of Korean ginseng. Methods: Five genes encoding pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins of P. ginseng were amplified and compared for polymorphism mining. Primary, secondary, and tertiary structures of PR5 protein were analyzed by ExPASy-ProtParam, PSSpred, and I-TASSER methods, respectively. A coding single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based specific primer was designed for K-1 by introducing a destabilizing mismatch within the 3' end. Allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time allele-specific PCR assays were conducted for molecular discrimination of K-1 from other cultivars and landraces. Results: A coding SNP leading to the modification of amino acid residue from aspartic acid to asparagine was exploited in PR5 gene of K-1 cultivar. Bioinformatics analysis showed that the modification of amino acid residue changed the secondary and tertiary structures of the PR5 protein. Primer KSR was designed for specific discrimination of K-1 from other ginseng cultivars and landraces. The developed real-time allele-specific PCR assay enabled easier automation and accurate genotyping of K-1 from a large number of ginseng samples. Conclusion: The SNP marker and the developed real-time allele-specific PCR assay will be useful not only for marker-assisted selection of K-1 cultivar but also for quality control in breeding and seed programs of P. ginseng.
