An improved sparsity-aware normalized least-mean-square scheme for underwater communication

        Anand Kumar,Prashant Kumar 한국전자통신연구원 2023 ETRI Journal Vol.45 No.3

Underwater communication (UWC) is widely used in coastal surveillance and early warning systems. Precise channel estimation is vital for efficient and reliable UWC. The sparse direct-adaptive filtering algorithms have become popular in UWC. Herein, we present an improved adaptive convex-combination method for the identification of sparse structures using a reweighted normalized leastmean-square (RNLMS) algorithm. Moreover, to make RNLMS algorithm independent of the reweighted l1-norm parameter, a modified sparsity-aware adaptive zero-attracting RNLMS (AZA-RNLMS) algorithm is introduced to ensure accurate modeling. In addition, we present a quantitative analysis of this algorithm to evaluate the convergence speed and accuracy. Furthermore, we derive an excess mean-square-error expression that proves that the AZA-RNLMS algorithm performs better for the harsh underwater channel. The measured data from the experimental channel of SPACE08 is used for simulation, and results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm. The simulation results confirm that the proposed algorithm for underwater channel estimation performs better than the earlier schemes.

Resource-efficient load-balancing framework for cloud data center networks

Kumar, Jitendra,Singh, Ashutosh Kumar,Mohan, Anand Electronics and Telecommunications Research Instit 2021 ETRI Journal Vol.43 No.1

Cloud computing has drastically reduced the price of computing resources through the use of virtualized resources that are shared among users. However, the established large cloud data centers have a large carbon footprint owing to their excessive power consumption. Inefficiency in resource utilization and power consumption results in the low fiscal gain of service providers. Therefore, data centers should adopt an effective resource-management approach. In this paper, we present a novel load-balancing framework with the objective of minimizing the operational cost of data centers through improved resource utilization. The framework utilizes a modified genetic algorithm for realizing the optimal allocation of virtual machines (VMs) over physical machines. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework improves the resource utilization by up to 45.21%, 84.49%, 119.93%, and 113.96% over a recent and three other standard heuristics-based VM placement approaches.

        Anand Kumar,Dinesh K. Sharma,Rajeev Lochan,Saurabh Dewan,Suman Negi 국립중앙과학관 2020 Journal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity Vol.13 No.2

Asian black francolin (Francolinus francolinus asiae) is an important bird species in the northwestern Himalayanregion, inhabiting diverse subtropical to lower temperate habitat types. The relative abundance, habitat preference, and some aspects of breeding ecology are studied here at eleven sites in different habitattypes along elevation gradient. The abundance of species at different altitude was worked both throughtransect trails of different lengths and point counts at some spots. At each study site, maximum activityhabitats were marked and selected for breeding ecology study. Sighting of black francolin was minimal inApril (0.585 0.185 birds/Km) and maximum in May (2.339 0.015 birds/Km). Data on breeding timings, nest site selection, clutch size, incubation period, and hatching success were collected. Breeding period ofblack francolin extended from March up to late July with peak egg-laying between May to June. Twelvenests were monitored throughout the breeding season using binoculars from a distance and camera traps, wherever possible and without disturbing the species. The average size of nest was 20.063 1.452 cmranging from of 18.80 cm to 22.30 cm in width. Mean clutch size was 5.417 0.793 eggs/nest. The hatchingsuccess was 86.15% with 56 successfully hatched eggs, whereas the fledging success was 83.92%.

On-Farm and Processing Factors Affecting Rabbit Carcass and Meat Quality Attributes

        Sethukali Anand Kumar,김혜진,Dinesh Darshaka Jayasena,조철훈 한국축산식품학회 2023 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.43 No.2

Rabbit meat has high nutritional and dietetic characteristics, but its consumption rate is comparatively lower than other meat types. The nutritional profile of rabbit meat, by comparison with beef, pork, and poultry, is attributed to relatively higher proportions of n-3 fatty acids and low amounts of intramuscular fat, cholesterol, and sodium, indicating its consumption may provide health benefits to consumers. But, the quality attributes of rabbit meat can be originated from different factors such as genetics, environment, diet, rearing system, pre-, peri-, and post-slaughter conditions, and others. Different rabbit breeds and the anatomical location of muscles may also affect the nutritional profile and physicochemical properties of rabbit meat. However, adequate information about the effect of those two factors on rabbit meat is limited. Therefore, cumulative information on nutritional composition and carcass and meat quality attributes of rabbit meat in terms of different breeds and muscle types and associated factors is more important for the production and processing of rabbits. Moreover, some studies reported that rabbit meat proteins exhibited angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory characteristics and antioxidant properties. The aim of this review is to elucidate the determinants of rabbit meat quality of different breeds and its influencing factors. In addition, the proven biological activities of rabbit meat are introduced to ensure consumer satisfaction.

Comparison of Radiological and Clinical Outcomes between Expandable and Non-expandable Cages Following Cervical Corpectomy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

        Das Anand Kumar,Purohit Devendra Kumar,Gupta Ajay,Kataria Rashim 대한척추외과학회 2023 Asian Spine Journal Vol.17 No.3

Anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion is considered the mainstay of surgical treatment in cervical pathology. Expandable and nonexpandable cages are preferred over autogenous bone graft because of donor-related morbidity. However, the choice of the cage type remains a debatable topic as studies report conflicting results. Thus, we evaluated the outcomes of expandable and non-expandable cages following cervical corpectomy. Studies were searched in various electronic databases (MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus, and Cochrane) between 2011 and 2021. Forest plot was made to compare the radiological and clinical outcomes between expandable and non-expandable cages following cervical corpectomy. Altogether, 26 studies (1,170 patients) were included in the metaanalysis. The mean change in segmental angle was significantly greater in the expandable cage group than in the non-expandable cage group (6.7° vs. 3.0°, <i>p</i> <0.001). The mean subsidence rate was lower in the expandable cage group (6% vs. 41%, <i>p</i> <0.001). The mean fusion rate was lower (93% vs. 98%, <i>p</i> =0.06) and the mean displacement rate was significantly higher in the expandable cage group (29% vs. 5%, <i>p</i> <0.05). The mean reoperation rate was higher in the expandable cage group (16% vs. 2%, <i>p</i> >0.05). The improvement in segmental angle is better with expandable cages. Higher subsidence is a major problem with non-expandable cages, but it seems to be beneficial as evidenced by the high fusion rate and minimal effect on clinical outcome in patients with this cage.

        Manoj Kumar Sharma,Sumeet Kainth,Sachin Kumar,Ankit Bhardwaj,Hemant Kumar Agarwal,Rakhi Maiwall,Kapil Dev Jamwal,Saggere Muralikrishna Shasthry,Ankur Jindal,Ashok Choudhary,Lovkesh Anand,Rajender Mal 대한간학회 2019 Clinical and Molecular Hepatology(대한간학회지) Vol.25 No.2

Background/Aims: The aim of this study was to study the efficacy and safety of zolpidem for sleep disturbances in patients with cirrhosis. Methods: Fifty-two Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) class A or B cirrhotics with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index >5 were randomized to either zolpidem 5 mg daily (n=26) or placebo (n=26) for 4 weeks. Results: The therapy of 4 weeks was completed by 23 patients receiving zolpidem (3 stopped treatment due to excessive daytime drowsiness) and 24 receiving placebo (2 refused to continue the study). In the zolpidem group, after 4 weeks of therapy, there was significant increase in total sleep time (TST) and sleep efficiency compared to baseline and improvement in polysomnographic parameters of sleep initiation and maintenance (i.e., decrease in sleep latency time, decrease in wake time, and decreases in number of arousals and periodic limbs movements per hour of sleep), without any significant change in sleep architecture. Conclusions: Four weeks of 5 mg daily zolpidem in CTP class A or B cirrhosis patients with insomnia led to significant increases in TST and sleep efficiency and improvement in polysomnographic parameters of sleep initiation and maintenance without any significant change in sleep architecture.

Removal of acid red-94 from aqueous solution using sugar cane dust: An agro-industry waste

Monoj Kumar Mondal,Ravi Shankar Singh,Anand Kumar,Brij Mohan Prasad 한국화학공학회 2011 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.28 No.6

The feasibility for the removal of Acid Red-94 by sugar cane dust, an agro-industry waste, has been investigated as an alternative for costly adsorbents. The effect of various experimental parameters (adsorbate concentration, solution pH and temperature) on removal of Acid Red-94 has been studied under batch mode of operation. Maximum removal upto 98.73% was achieved at a pH value of 2.0 and temperature 19±0.5 ℃ in case of 10.0mg/l initial dye concentration. Adsorption kinetics has been described by Lagergren equation and adsorption isotherms by classical Langmuir and Freundlich models. The kinetic studies suggest that the rate of uptake of Acid Red-94 on sugar cane dust was mainly diffusion controlled. Various thermodynamic parameters have been calculated and the temperature dependence indicates exothermic nature of adsorption process. The results indicate that sugar cane dust could be used as an eco-friendly and cost-effective adsorbent in the removal of Acid Red-94 from aqueous solution.

        Mirizzi’s syndrome

        Ashok Kumar,Ganesan Senthil,Anand Prakash,Anu Behari,Rajneesh Kumar Singh,Vinay Kumar Kapoor,Rajan Saxena 한국간담췌외과학회 2016 한국간담췌외과학회지 Vol.20 No.1

Backgrounds/Aims: Mirizzi’s syndrome (MS) poses great diagnostic and management challenge to the treating physician. We presented our experience of MS cases with respect to clinical presentation, diagnostic difficulties, surgical procedures and outcome. Methods: Prospectively maintained data of all surgically treated MS patients were analyzed. Results: A total of 169 MS patients were surgically managed between 1989 and 2011. Presenting symptoms were jaundice (84%), pain (75%) and cholangitis (56%). Median symptom duration s was 8 months (range, <1 to 240 months). Preoperative diagnosis was possible only in 32% (54/169) of patients based on imaging study. Csendes Type II was the most common diagnosis (57%). Fistulization to the surrounding organs (bilio-enteric fistulization) were found in 14% of patients (24/169) during surgery. Gall bladder histopathology revealed xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis in 33% of patients (55/169). No significant difference in perioperative morbidity was found between choledochoplasty (use of gallbladder patch) (15/89, 17%) and bilio-enteric anastomosis (4/28, 14%) (p=0.748). Bile leak was more common with choledochoplasty (5/89, 5.6%) than bilio-enteric anastomosis (1/28, 3.5%), without statistical significance (p=0.669). Conclusions: Preoperative diagnosis of MS was possible in only one-third of patients in our series. Significant number of patients had associated fistulae to the surrounding organs, making the surgical procedure more complicated. Awareness of this entity is important for intraoperative diagnosis and consequently, for optimal surgical strategy and good outcome.

Allocation of DG in Distribution Network Using Parameter Independent JAYA Algorithm

        Pandey Anand Kumar,Kirmani Sheeraz,Kumar Ankesh,Akhtar Iram 대한전기학회 2023 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.18 No.3

Integration of DGs in the distribution network has led to challenges in making the system reliability, and other parameters improve. This paper gives a detailed discussion on the placement of DG in the distribution system using the new algorithm ‘JAYA’ having no control parameter which makes the algorithm simple than previous used algorithms and also give best solutions according to the study. Three system parameters are considered for DG placement solution: active power loss reduction, voltage deviation reduction and voltage stability index maximization. The methodology is presented to calculate the optimal values for varying load profiles i.e. constant, residential, commercial and industrial. Type-1 DG placement is considered for placement. Simultaneous improvement of all factors using weight based multi-objective function is used. Standard test system IEEE-33 and 69 bus is used to validate the applicability of the methodology and compared to other optimization methods, the results presented proves the JAYA to be better optimization of optimal DG calculation as the method is simple, feasible and have good applicability with other nature inspired and meta-heuristic methods.
