The objectives of this study are to predict CANDU moderator temperatures by using the CUPID code and to validate the CUPID against STERN 2D experimental data. In this study, both single and two phase flows in the Calandria vessel were calculated by using the CUPID code. KAERI has been developing the CUPID Code. It adopts three-dimensional, transient, two-phase and three-field model, and includes various physical models and correlations of the interfacial mass, momentum and energy transfer for the closure relations of the two-fluid model. The CUPID code validated using the single-phase flow experimental data that were performed in the STERN Lab.

The instable oil price makes seek the more efficient energy machine and energy system. CHP(combined heat and power) system is the most favorable alternative choice among the energy saving systems but the severe emission regulation for the CHP system is an another challenge thing. Because of the need for the Ultra Low NOx CHP system, the efforts for reducing the toxic emission including NOx and CO are continuously investigated. The cogeneration hybrid system was developed by the need for the low NOx CHP system at the previous work, but the huge amount of the total fuel considering conventional CHP system, the after-burner which is a component of the cogeneration hybrid system was optimized to minimize the fuel consumption. In this experiment, the after-burner was re-optimized by the fuel supply minimization and engine exhaust gas-fuel flow distribution optimization. All the condition was optimized and adjusted to meet the exhaust gas condition, below 1% O₂ amount and 300-2000ppm CO. The optimized cogeneration hybrid system can meet the current NOx level and exhaust gas regulation and it will achieve the clean combustion gas and efficient cogeneration system.

Background/Aims: Two different methods of colon transit time studies (4-day method and 7-day method) are commonly used in Korea. The aim of this study was to define the normal values and to compare the clinical usefulness of the two methods. Methods: Seventy-five healthy volunteers and 101 patients with chronic constipation were enrolled in this study. Radio-opaque markers were given for 3 days and simple abdominal radiographs were obtained on the 4th and 7th days. Colon transit times estimated by only 4th-day film (CTT-4) and by both 4th and 7th-day films (CTT-7) were compared. Results: The upper limits of normal volunteers without constipation were 56 hours in CTT-4 and 61 hours in CTT-7. In selecting constipated patients with delayed transit, the results of both methods were comparable (kappa=0.823, p<0.01). However, the 4-day method could not differentiate patients with severely delayed transit from patients with mildly delayed transit. Conclusions: Four-day method is useful in selecting constipated patients with delayed transit but it does not give relevant information on the severity of delayed transit. Seven-day method can be used in selecting patients with severely delayed transit. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2001;38:241-246)

This paper presents a high sensitive force sensing module to measure machining forces for a tip-based nanopatterning instrument. The force sensing module utilizing a leaf spring mechanism and a capacitive displacement sensor has been designed to provide a measuring range from 80μN to 8N. This force sensing module is mounted on a PZT driven in-feed motion stage with 1 ㎚ resolution. The sample can be moved by a X-Y scanning motion stage with 5 ㎚ resolution. In the patterning experiments, the machining forces were controlled and monitored by the force sensing module. Then, the patterned sample was measured by AFM. Experimental results demonstrated that the developed force sensing module can be used as an effective sensing device in the nanopatterning operation.

N/A Background: Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) is a potent inhibit or of epithelial cell growth. However, carcinoma cells, unlike normal cells, can escape from negative regulation by TGF-β through lack of expression or mutation of TGF-β receptor gene. In this study, we investigated the role of TGF-β1 and TGF-β type 2 receptors (TβR-2) in the progression of gastric cancer. Methods: We analyzed TGF-β1 and TβR-2 mRNA expression semi-quantitatively, measured by comparative RT-PCR using GAPDH, in 23 patients who underwent gastric resection for gastric cancer. We analyzed the relationship between the clinicopathologic findings and the level of the TGF-β1 and TβR-2 mRNA expression in carcinoma tissues and in adjacent normal tissues of gastric cancer. Results: (1) TGF-β1 and TβR- 2 mRNA were expressed in all of the carcinoma tissues and adjacent normal tissues without statistical difference in the level of the expression. (2) The level of TGF-β1 mRNA expression was higher in patients with early gastric cancer , negative lymph nodes or negative perineural invasion. There was no significant correlation between the level of TGF-β1 mRNA expression and several parameters such as age, gender, tumor size, differentiation, Lauren's classification, and vascular invasion. (3) There was no significant correlation between the level of TβR-2 mRNA expression and several prognostic variables described above. (4) There was significant correlation between the level of TGF-β1 and TβR-2 mRNA in carcinoma tissues. Conclusion: The above data indicates that TGF-β1 may contribute in the early stages of gastric carcinogenesis. Further studies are required to clarify the role of TGF-β1 in gastric carcinogenesis.
