Factors Associated with Blue-collar Workers’ Risk Perception of Cardiovascular Disease
황원주,홍외생,Mija Kim 한국간호과학회 2012 Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Vol.42 No.7
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the contribution of actual cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, as well as,individual, psychosocial, and work-related factors as predictors of CVD risk perception among Korean blue-collar workers. Methods: The participants were 238 Korean blue-collar workers who worked in small companies. Data were collected through a survey; anthropometric and blood pressure measures; and blood sampling for lipid levels. Results: Blue-collar workers had high actual CVD risk and low CVD risk perception. The significant predictors of risk perception included perceived health status, alcohol consumption, knowledge of CVD risk, actual CVD risk, decision latitude, and shift work. The model explained 26% of the variance in CVD risk perception. Conclusion: The result suggests when occupational health nurses are giving routine health examination in small companies, they can enhance CVD risk perception in blue-collar workers by providing essential information about CVD risk factors and personal counseling on the individual worker’s CVD risk status.

This study investigated a systematic literature review on local and international literatures focusing on Participatory Action Research(PAR), Community Based Participatory Research(CBPR) in workplace and community. Eighty percent of the 10 studies reviewed included research involving health professionals, community networks, workers, and university researchers. Health promotion programs varied from health and safety awareness, smoking cessation, diabetes management, physical activity, self-efficacy enhancement, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders and mental health. PAR, CBPR are required to participate actively in research through community collaboration to promote health. We can solve problems at the community level. And identified sustainable effects when developing and implementing a health promotion program. PAR and CBPR are expected to continuously pursue change by adjusting the scope of individuals, organizations, communities, and institutional dimensions. They are also expected to be implemented for workers in the various workplace.

Seromas commonly occur or recur after reconstructive surgery in patients with pressure ulcers, often leading to infection, increasing the risk of wound dehiscence and flap necrosis, and therefore requiring an additional surgical procedure. Various strategies have been employed to treat seroma, such as retaining as much of the fascia as possible, using progressive tension sutures, inserting suction drains, utilizing sclerotherapy, or applying compression via dressings or specialized garments. However, despite these efforts, seroma prevention remains difficult. In the current report, we describe three cases in which we administered Viscum album extract to prevent and treat seromas that developed following pressure ulcer reconstruction. V. album extract sclerotherapy was performed in a patient with a recurrent seroma, a patient with a persistent seroma, and a patient wishing to undergo sclerotherapy immediately postoperatively as a prophylactic treatment. The seromas resolved shortly after initiating treatment, and recurrence was not observed at any of the subsequent outpatient follow-up visits. These cases suggest that sclerotherapy with V. album extract following pressure ulcer reconstruction can suppress development of seromas and lower the risk of recurrence.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze health status of women working in traditional marketplace and their needs for public healthcare services. Methods: A descriptive survey of 500 women working at three traditional marketplaces was conducted. Results: street vendors’ health status were much poorer than store merchants’. Furthermore, psychosocial factors like job stress and depression were increased in street venders. Thus, the public healthcare programs required by them included exercise programs (28.2%) and health checkup (26.8%). In addition, 31.2% of the participants reported that they needed visiting nursing care services. The rate of occupational health and safety or employment insurances was as low as 10.8%. Conclusion: Effective interventions including psychosocial factors for women workers at traditional marketplaces need to be developed based on these results. Also, it is recommended that public health care services such as outreach services and visiting nursing care services for women working at traditional marketplaces be provided. Furthermore, institutional provisions such as insurances for protecting these vulnerable groups’ health are needed.
