        This study was purposed to find out whether or not college students could distinguish facts from opinions and they could think critically in order to make judgment and evaluation, given challenging arguments and evidence in relation to Haeckel’'s recapitulation theory and the vestigial organs. The subject were 79 students who majored in sciences at a college of education. They read reading materials and completed both a critical analysis table and a questionnaire about the activity itself. The responses were analyzed through the qualitative analysis. When students were asked to identify both the supporting evidence and the challenging evidence about the two theories, many of them did opinions as well as the facts for the evidence. The criteria students listed for evaluating supporting and challenging evidence were accuracy, objectivity, logic, and fact. Students were asked to evaluate the evidence on the ground of the definition of scientific method. The most frequent response in the case of supporting evidence was that the related observations could not be conducted, but only deducted from the theory, and therefore the evidence was not consistent with the definition of scientific method. However, in the case of challenging evidence, students responded that relatively observable evidence was provided; scientists tried to draw a conclusion from several investigations; the challenging evidence was more consistent with the scientific method. Among the general responses for the activities, over 80% students replied positively to items such as stimulating thought, understanding challenging evidence against evolution, the change of view on evolution, the possibility of application of this activity in classrooms as pre-teachers, the interest on the activities, understanding of scientific methods and the curiosity about the evidence. The results suggest that using challenging evidence, teachers could foster students’critical thinking ability, and that evolution theory and evidence could be an effective topic for this kind of activity.

        보광 광원 종류에 따른 약광기 품종별 오이 접목묘의 생육과 묘소질 및 정식 후 초기 과실 수량

        상품성 있는 오이를 수확하기 위해서는 고품질의 묘를 사용해야 한다. 약광기 온실에서 묘를 생산하는 것은 묘의 생육에필요한 광이 불충분하여 상품성이 저하될 수 있다. 이는 광질이 다른 인공광을 사용한 보광을 통해 약광 조건을 해결하여고품질의 묘를 생산할 수 있다. 본 연구는 약광기에 오이 접목묘의 생육과 묘소질에 적절한 보광 광원을 구명하고자 진행되었다. 오이는 ‘낙원성청장’, ‘신세대’, ‘굿모닝백다다기’ 3가지 품종을 접수로 사용하였다. ‘흑종’ 호박을 대목으로 사용하였다. 종자는 2023년 1월 26일 파종하였고, 2023년 2월 9일에접목하였다. 접목 활착 후 오이묘를 RB LED(red and blue LED, red:blue = 8:2), W LED(white LED, R:G:B = 5:3:2), 그리고 HPS를 광원으로 이용하여 처리하였다. 무처리구를대조구로 사용하였다. 보광은 일출 전 2시간, 일몰 후 2시간 동안 19일간 처리하였다. 경경과 지하부의 생체중과 지하부는보광 광원 처리별 유의적인 차이가 없었다. W LED에서 초장과 하배축장이 짧아졌다. 하지만, 엽장, 엽폭, 엽면적 그리고지상부의 생체중과 건물중은 RB LED에서 가장 높은 값을 나타냈다. 충실도, 순동화율, 그리고 작물생장률과 같은 묘소질은 RB LED와 W LED에서 증가하는 경향을 보였다. 정식 후, 대부분의 생장은 유의적인 차이가 없었지만, 초기 과실 수량은 전체적으로 대조구보다 실험구에서 많았고, RB LED와 W LED에서 과실 수량이 가장 많았다. 결론적으로 약광기 오이접목묘에 RB LED와 W LED를 보광 광원으로 사용하는 것은 묘의 생육, 묘소질, 그리고 초기 과실 수량을 증가시킬 수있다. To harvest marketable cucumbers, high quality seedlings must be used. Producing seedlings in the greenhouse during the low radiation period decreases marketability due to insufficient light for growth. Supplemental lighting with artificial light of different quality can be used to improve low light conditions and produce high quality seedlings. Therefore, this study was conducted to select the appropriate supplemental light sources on the growth and seedling quality of grafted cucumber seedlings during the low radiation period. Three cultivars of cucumber were used as scions for grafting; ‘NakWonSeongcheongjang’, ‘Sinsedae’, and ‘Goodmorning baekdadagi’. Figleaf gourd (Cucurbita ficifolia) ‘Heukjong’ was used as the rootstock. The seeds were sown on January 26, 2023, and grafted on February 9, 2023. After graft-taking, cucumbers in plug trays were treated with RB light-emitting diodes (LED, red and blue LED, red:blue = 8:2), W LED (white LED, R:G:B = 5:3:2), and HPS (high-pressure sodium lamp), respectively. Non-treatment was used as the control. Supplemental lighting was applied 2 hours before sunrise and 2 hours after sunset for 19 days. The stem diameter and fresh and dry weights of roots did not differ significantly by supplemental light sources. The plant height and hypocotyl length were decreased in W LED. However, the leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, and fresh and dry weights of shoots were the highest in the RB LED. Seedling qualities such as crop growth rate, net assimilation rate, and compactness were also increased in RB LED and W LED. After transplanting, most of the growth was not significant, but early yield of cucumber was higher in LED than non-treatment. In conclusion, using RB LED, W LED for supplemental light source during low radiation period in grafted cucumber seedlings improved growth, seedling quality, and early yield of cucumber.         MYB class transcription factors bind to the tuber-specific and sucrose-response element of a class-I patatin promoter

        Class-I patatin genes, which encode the potato storage protein patatin, are tuber specific in their expression, and several promoter elements directing the tissuespecific expression of the patatin genes have been known for long time. However, the identity of the relevant transcription factors is still unknown. In this study, we show that K box, one of the protein-binding sites in a class-I patatin gene promoter, is a novel cis-regulatory element required for the tuber-specific expression of the gene. Subsequently, we isolated K-box-binding factors by yeast one-hybrid screening. Analysis of the factors revealed that they are MYB class transcription factors, which we named TSF1–4 (tuber-specific and sucrose-inducible elementbinding factors 1–4). TSFs possess transcriptional activity to various degrees, and overexpression of TSF2, which possesses the highest transcriptional activity, induced the ectopic expression of patatin genes in potato leaves. Our results strongly suggest that TSFs could play regulatory function in the expression of patatin genes in planta.

      • 교통소음의 영향인자에 관한 연구

        In recent years methods for evaluating the noise of different types of vehicles have been developed, In contrast, international methods to measure traffic noise do not exist, nor are there methods to seperately measure the influence of the road surface on traffic noise. The aim of this study is to evaluate the suitability of stationary and mobile techniques for measureing traffic noise on different road surfaces by directly comparing the results obtained from both techniques. The results show that significant differences were observed in the levels of noise emitted from various types of road pavements. The relative differences found in the two methods were broadly comparable, It can be concluded that both methods have advantages and disadvantages. The results bring into question the suitability of the stationary method for characterizing the influence of road surface on traffic noise, as the latter method relies on fixed reception points. Therefore. it seems that for characterizing the influence of road surface on traffic noise the trailer method is most suitable, while for characterizing the noise level at the receiver alongside the road, the traffic method is preferable.

To James,the value in America is always unambiguous,where people pay a price for their moral conduct.In this regard, the main characters in james's works embody what James thinks is the American characteristics as represented in Christopher Newman's overconfidence , Isabel Archer's naive assumption of life,and Lambert Strether's excessive moral consciousness.James's concern,however,is not in the presentation of Americans whose ideas are thwarted in the different world of Europe.His real concern is to emphasize the complex fate of Americans:the danger and conflict that Americans inevitably get because of their limited social and cultural assets.Naturally Americans can be an easy victim to the outside world for the mirror image they have made.Because of the lack of the sense of history , culture,and various social institutions, Americans must get involved with other world to find out their defects as people and as a country.

      • 아파트의 騷音·振動 調査 에 關한 硏究

        With improvement of the social life, noise and vibration, two of the habitat factors occurring in apartment buildings, gradually become more of a social problem. Causes of the pollution and its propagation paths are investigated in this study and counter measures are proposed to reflect at the early stage of planing and design through a case study for future apartment building design. Noise and vibration caused by the mechanical facilities of the apartment building are measured. The conclusions of this study are as followings. 1. The major causes of noise and vibration are combustion gas and heating apparatus, respectively. Noise and vibration may be delivered to the households by a complex process of the facilities. 2. To reduce the noise and vibration, countermeasures for propagation paths are provided and the estimated reduction of noise and vibration is presented in this study. 3. The building floors in this study are made of light-weight prefabricated concrete slab. Its isolation capacity of a crashing sound is L-80. This is the average level within 17 buildings made of light-weight forming concrete.

        Ultrasonographic features differentiating thyroglossal duct cysts from dermoid cysts

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify ultrasonographic features that can be used to differentiate between thyroglossal duct cysts (TGDCs) and dermoid cysts (DCs). Methods: We searched surgical pathology reports completed between January 2004 and October 2015 and identified 66 patients with TGDCs or DCs who had undergone preoperative ultrasonography. The ultrasound images were reviewed by two radiologists who were blinded to the pathological diagnosis. They evaluated the following parameters: dimensions, shape, margin, location in relation to the midline, level in relation to the hyoid bone, attachment to the hyoid bone, the depth of the lesion in relation to the strap muscles, internal echogenicity, internal echogenic dots, multilocularity, the presence of a longitudinal extension into the tongue base, posterior acoustic enhancement, the presence of internal septae, and intralesional vascularity. Results: There were 50 TGDCs and 16 DCs. TGDCs were significantly more likely than DCs to have an irregular shape, an ill-defined margin, attachment to the hyoid bone, an intramuscular location, heterogeneous internal echogenicity, multilocularity, and longitudinal extension into the tongue base. Conclusion: Ultrasound findings may inform the differential diagnosis between TGDCs and DCs.

      • 월출산국립공원 수질특성에 관한 연구

        Because mountain streams have narrow widths and steep slopes compared to streams and lakes, hours of immobility are considerably short, and the quality of mountain streams has been greatly influenced by rainfall, land-use, components of the streambed and types of forests. During the summer when heavy rainfall occurs, eroded earth and sand flow into mountain streams and cause temporarily high turbidity. It is also the cause of eutrophication, which is frequently found in downstream. As evaluation standards for the quality of mountain streams were not established in Korea, this quality was evaluated by examining some items based on quality standards for drinkable water and research on the influences of pollution in mountain streams, which showed that these were seldom in downstream water systems. Mountain streams within Wolchulsan National Park flow into a reservoir and when characteristics of mountain streams from forests and rainfall that flow into mountain streams through forest ecosystems were studied, results of measuring its changes are as follows. Monthly changes of pH were low between April and August and higher starting October, and the EC was measured higher in the winter and the spring and tended to be low starting April. The EC on the 19th of May and the 23rd of October and the concentration of floating materials and COD_(Mn) were observed to be higher due to the influence of rainfall on the 19th of May and the 22nd of October, and it was judged that the washing out of dried deposits attached to the water pipe and the leaching of woods were influenced by rainfall. It is considered that real-time monitoring of water quality for a long time and water quality conditions during and after rainfall should be examined for ensuring basic data of water quality and evaluating characteristics and seasonableness of mountain streams, which may be greatly changed by artificial influence in the future.
