Shakespeare 작품에 나타난 신비성 연구 : Hamlet의 'Ghost'를 중심으로 with reference to the Ghost in Hamlet

This paper attempt to uncover the so-called mysticism in Shakespeare's plays. It focuses on interpreting the ghost in Hamlet, a major play of Shakespears. The Ghost in Hamlet is an integral element of the play. bestowing life and substace to it, as well as ensuring lasting theatrical wonder and completeness. Without proper understanding of the Ghost with its multiple meanings, one cannot grasp the full appreciation of Hamlet. This paper wades through major literature and scholarly works to unveil the nature and significance of the ghost as it is cast with undiminished weight in Hamlet. An interpretative perspective is constructed to treat the Ghost as a personified figure, comprehensible in the context of religious beliefs shared by the comtemporary audience of Shakespeare.

세계 주요 도시의 문화적 상징체계에 관한 연구

As a expedient to get a city competitive power among the world competitive countries and to activate the city's economy, the world is striving to hold a city's image not as a center government but center in each city. For this method each city is developing a symbol of a city and actively use it in city branding and marketing. This research investigates each city's symbol development examples and understands city and symbol development and analyze how it is composed about the city's symbol system based on the research, and the result about research about how city development and city symbol has influenced is below. 1. There are several forms of symbols in the world city and a city image is formed by wholly combination and organic relation. 2. The city symbol of the world city is widely used as a city marketing means. 3. City symbol is consisted of symbol distance, cord symbol matter and sysbol meaning and they are in organic matter and form a city relation system and create a materiality and formlessness effect. 세계 경쟁국들 사이에서 도시 경쟁력을 확보하고 도시의 경제를 활성화하기 위한 방편으로 세계는 중앙 정부가 아닌 각 도시를 중심으로 도시 이미지를 구축하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 이를 위한 방법으로 각 도시는 도시의 상징을 개발하고 있으며 그것을 도시 브랜딩과 마케팅에 적극적으로 활용하고 있다. 본 연구는 세계 각 도시의 상징 개발 사례를 조사하고 도시와 상징의 관계를 파악한 후 이를 바탕으로 도시의 상징체계가 어떻게 구성이 되는지를 분석하여 도시 발전에 도시 상징이 미치는 영향에 대해 연구한 것으로 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 세계 도시에는 여러 형태의 상징들이 존재하며 이들의 총체적인 결합과 유기적인 관계에 의해 도시 이미지가 형성된다. 2. 세계 도시는 도시 상징들을 도시 마케팅 수단으로 다양하게 활용하고 있다. 3. 도시 상징은 크게 상징 거리, 핵심 상징물, 상징 의미로 구성되며 이들은 서로 유기적인 관계로서 도시상징체계를 형성하여 유·무형적인 효과를 창출한다.

Tennessee Williams 의 "The Glass Menagerie" 小考 : An Unemotional Interpretation

This study attempts to interprete the characters in the Glass Menagerie, a major play of Tennessee Williams, in light of the illusions that they create and use as refuges to compensate for harsh life. Conflicts between what they are forced to endure in real life and what they entertain in illusions to attain grace and elegance are identified throughout important episodes in the play and illusions are interpreted as passive means to avert the unresolved conflicts they face in life. The interpreation follows a brief introduction to the life of the playwright and the literary importance he attained in the contemporary American literature. Characters are placed in a preconceived paradigm to fit into the nature of the illusions to which they have easy access. The illusions are depicted to serve their emotional hungers and desires to escape from the mean life, over which they have little personal control. The illusions are interpreted as poorely serving their creators and addicts, by virtue of the creeping force they inflicts on the characters, while they exhibit tendency to withdraw from the reality instead of confronting it squarely.

Othello에서의 여성간의 우정

Shakespeare의 작품에서 비교적 흔하게 띄는 요소지만, 비평가들이 별로 다루지 않는 부분이라면 아마도 "우정"이 아닐까한다. 우정은 Shakespeare가 쓴 거의 모든 작품에서 주 주제로 또는 plot전개의 주요 요소로 나타나고 있다. 그러나 비평가들이 지금까지 우정에 대하여 견지하여온 견해는 매우 근시안적이고, 체계성을 결하고 있어 Shakespeare극에서 우정이 지닌 의미를 충분하게 탐색하는 일이 어렵게 되어 있다.

Antigone와 Isabella

기원전 4세기경에 쓰여진 Sophocles의 작품 Antigone에 등장하는 여주인공 Antigone과 1604년경에 쓰여진 Shakespeare의 Measure for Measure의 여주인공 Isabella가 동기애라는 생리적이고 윤리적인 끈에 묶이어 생존의 갈등을 풀어 가는 여러 측면과 태도를 살펴보았따. 그녀들은 숙명처럼 주어진 각기 다른 역사적인 배경과 시대적 상황을 뛰어 넘지 못하는 가운데, 인격적 교류의 직접적인 대상이 되는 주변의 남성인물들과 다양한 정서적, 사회적,윤리적 관계를 형성하고 있다. 이같은 관계를 중심으로 주인공들이 겪는 피하지 못하는 현실세계의 긴장과 갈등을 살펴보고 이것들이 지니는 극적 의미를 검토하여 보았다.

Shakespeare 극에서의 Mother 역할 : Coriolanus의 Volumnia를 중심으로

This paper is an attempt to highlight the masculine trait impersonated in Volumnia in Coriolanus, a later-period Shakespearean tradegy. The masculine personality is interpreted in light of its self-serving and destructive influence brought upon the shaping of the personality of her son Coriolanus and on his eventual downfall as an independent human being. Magnified in the paper is the conflicts displayed by the imposing and assertive mother and her rebellious but dependent son in viewing values in life. Also depicted is the distorted ambition of Volumnia to manipulate her son throughout the entire course of his life to have him serve in her interest. The innate ambition of Volumnia to achieve what is believed to belong to man's world ; honor, power and glory is contrasted with the thwarted response and submission on the part of Coriolanus, which lead into the tragic conclusion of this drama.

Edward Albee의 The Zoo Story에 나타난 현대인의 고립감 : Jerry의 자살의 동기를 중심으로

This paper is an attempt to build up a new outlook to explore the rich metaphors alluding to human alienation and bondage as described in Edward Albee's The Zoo Story. It goes through the characteristic narratives of the play to amplify human alienation as the primary curse of the modern society. The paper gives ample examples to illustrate the complex spectrum of arenation as they relate to human disintegration and social breakdown. The tragic implications of loneliness and alienation of modern men are personified in Jerry, the hero of the play. Through a new interpretative framework he is observed as the terminally bound human being struggling to obtain a break-through toward freedom. His tragic ending is explained in terms of the imposing impersonality of the modern society and the enfeebled and submissive human reaction to the binding and cruel environment. The paper takes heed to human emotion taking precedence of social apparatus in coping with the tragic environment. It also notes of the prevailing scene of human miseries in which one can be more vulnerable to suffering, when emotionally deprived. The paper also notes the important trait of the play giving discredit to personalized and artificial human contacts to restore human relations. The paper tries to trace multiple meanings concealed behind the personal tragedy. It is framed within the social rehabilitation to be build upon common bondage and shared emotion among human beings. In this way, the disconnected relations among men in the modern society are interpreted more as signifying imperfections of the human community than personal maladjustments and limitations. This paper endeavors to set forth the important metaphor of the play; the futile act of the hero to have a solid union with a fellow human being is ironically the very act promising a lead into human salvation. The metaphor became transparent by the tragic end of his self-denial which comes out as not an act of condemnation but an act of new promise to human resurrection.
