We investigated the effect of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodi-benzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) on the expression of synaptic proteins in dissociated E18 rat cortical cells. TCDD (0-50 nM) was added to plating media, and cell viabil-ity and expression of synaptic proteins were assayed on 4 and 7 days in vitro (DIV), respectively. TCDD had no apparent effect on early neurite outgrowth 12 h after plating. However, on 4 DIV, cell viability was re-duced significantly, and neurons often revealed vacu-oles in 20 or 50 nM culture and had limited secondary or higher order dendritic processes in 20 or 50 nM culture. Immunoblot analyses of cell homogenates in-dicated upregulation of NMDA receptor subunits (NR1, NR2A, and NR2B), but downregulation of syn-aptic organizing proteins (PSD-95, densin-180, and septin6 homologue) and a synapse-enriched enzyme (aCaMKII). Changes in the expression of synaptic proteins may be a underlying mechanism for altered synaptic transmission and neuropathy by TCDD.

Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) is a multigene family composed of constitutively expressed members(Hsc70) and stress-inducible members (Hsp70). In the mammalian nervous system, a considerable amount of HSPs is also synthesized under normal conditions suggesting that they play an important role in the metabolism of unstressed cells. In this study we examined the expression of Hsp70 in the synapses of rat cerebellar neurons. Immunohistochemistry using specific antibodies revealed that both Hsp70 and Hsc70 are expressed in the cerebellar tissue, with strongest expression in Purkinje cells followed by granule cells. Neurons in deep cerebellar nuclei were also intensely stained by Hsp70 antibody. Immunocytochemical stainings of cultured cerebellar cells showed that Hsp70 is expressed in both Purkinje and granule cells. The expression was punctate in the soma and along dendritic trees, and the punctae were colocalized with those of PSD95, a postsynaptic marker. Immunoblotting also indicates that Hsp70 is associated with the postsynaptic density fraction. Taken together, our results indicate that the Hsp70 is expressed in cerebellar neurons in normal conditions, and that some are localized in the synapses.

This essay presents a brief historiography of contemporary feminist literary criticism from the perspective of subjectless critique. Believed to be centered around the core concept of female subjectivity, feminist literary criticism is supposed to address issues related with what it means to be a woman, to write as a woman, to be constantly aligned with collective traits of femininity. Nonetheless, the very category of woman has always been contested as it needs to be deconstructed in its essentialist assumptions and to be reconfigured in pursuit of multiplicity, singularity, irreducibility, and, most importantly, difference not just among women but rather within a subject. Such perpetual instability or impossibility of the category of woman, paradoxically enough, enables feminist discourses to remain open to re-negotiation with intersecting axes of subjectivity formation. This essay attempts to examine how the discourse of feminist literary criticism can be decentered through radical intervention with the linear temporality and ceaseless re-significations of feminine difference as well. The structure of the essay consists of the following components. First, feminist literary criticism is contextualized under the rubric of ’critique’ elaborated by Michel Foucault. Then, I revisit Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own to tap into its audacious dismissal of binary gender definition and its nuanced proposal of subjectless writer. Next, drawing on Julia Kristeva’s formulation of literary inscription of feminist temporality, I discuss the ways in which sexual difference can be theorized in relation with subjectless state. The final thesis ’feminism which is not one’ is demonstrated with emphases on disidentifying process of becoming, which requires a critical distance from amenable storytelling of feminist history. The essay concludes with a brief illumination of political reverberations of subjectless critique in this increasingly post-critical times.
Vol.79 No.4
This essay presents a reparative and nuanced re-reading of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre with a focus on fluidity, mobility, and permeability of its protagonist to illuminate the dynamic configuration of feminine subjectivity, never given as a fixed identity, rather enacted through the repetitive imperial performativity. Observing that the distance between domestic space and remote empire is constantly recalibrated in the novel, this essay argues that subjectivity its heroine, forced to be mired in such recalibration, continues to take a risk for drastic disengagement and escape. While resonating with both Gayatri Spivak’s postcolonial critique of the novel’s imperial complicity and Nancy Armstrong’s criticism of domestic ideology, the essay endeavors to contextualize their intersectional critical interests under the rubric of ‘feminization.’ The essay analyzes the ways in which liminality and hybridity are represented relentlessly to unsettle the boundaries of binarism between home and empire, which leads to reevaluate the politics of feminization and its discontents and also helps expanding the discussion on the complex nexus of gender and nation in literary discourse and beyond.
