디지털 미디어를 통한 한국인 영어학습자들의 교실 밖 영어학습과 정의적 요인의 관계 연구

This study examines the relationship between out-of-class English learning phenomena and affective variables of Korean English learners through digital media. In total, 104 university students participated in the study and filled out the questionnaires developed to measure the participants’ usage of digital media for productive and receptive English learning as well as to measure affective variables (grit, motivation, self-confidence, and anxiety) in English learning. The results from One way ANOVA analysis showed that there are statistical differences among the participants in both receptive and productive English learning through digital media and that there are also statistical differences among the participants in affective variables except for self-confidence. The results from multiple regression analysis revealed that self-confidence is the only significant variable explaining both productive and receptive English learning with digital media whereas motivation has an effect on receptive English learning with digital media. Implications of the findings and suggestions for further studies are presented. (152 words)
디지털미디어 기술을 활용한 교실 밖 L2 영어학습에 대한 자기조절학습능력과 정의적 요인의 관계연구

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of self-regulated learning ability and affective variables in L2 out-of-class English learning using digital media technology, and to analyze the correlation between self-regulated learning ability and affective variables. A total of 79 university students participated in this study and completed questionnaires developed to measure the participants’ use of digital media technology, self-regulated learning ability, and affective variables in L2 out-of-class English learning. As a result of multiple regression analyses, among the domains of self-regulated learning ability, an ability to ‘regulate social connection needs’, and among the affectiv e variables, ‘self-confidence’ were found to be major variables affecting L2 out-of class English learning using digital media technology. There is a need for continuous interest in the study of L2 English learning activities outside the classroom using digital media technology and self-regulated learning ability.
영어 능숙도와 읽기 지문의 종류가 중학교 영어 학습자의 어휘 의미 추론 책략 사용에 미치는 영향

Second language (L2) readers are expected to apply various inferencing strategies when they encounter unfamiliar lexical items while reading. This study investigated the effects of L2 proficiency levels (high vs. low) and text types (expository vs. narrative) on the use of lexical inferencing strategies by 12 Korean middle school students. The participants were asked to translate the two types of texts into their mother tongue while thinking aloud. Detailed analyses of the transcribed think-aloud data and retrospective interview results revealed several important findings, including (1) high proficiency readers used inferencing strategies more actively and successfully than low proficiency readers; (2) high proficiency readers tended to use the flow of the context most frequently, although using other types of clue around the target words was the most successful strategy for them; (3) low proficiency readers heavily relied on their background knowledge to guess unknown words. This strategy, together with the strategy of analyzing morphemes of the target words, was found to be a successful one; (4) using background knowledge in the expository text, and analyzing morphemes of the target words in the narrative text, were found most successful. The findings on the frequencies and the success rates of each strategy type would contribute to better-informed practices in vocabulary instruction.

In this study, we investigated the characteristics of individual farms and their regions that influenced the selection of farming enterprise. This is considered as a prerequisite in the introduction of crop diversification in rice fields which has been reviewed as a solution to the structural problem of rice oversupply in South Korea. It is, in general, necessary to analyze the regional influence as well because farming systems in individual farms are not influenced by the characteristics of individual farms only. They are also influenced by the characteristics of the regions the farms belong to. In this study, the factors influencing the selection of farming by the paddy rice farmers were analyzed using data obtained from the 2015 Agriculture and Forestry Census. Integrating the analytical results from the study, we presented the following policy proposals for the introduction of rice production adjustment system , such as expanding the rental business of agricultural machinery, strengthening information education, establishing the conditions for the wide use of agricultural land, systematizing the supply and demand of agricultural manpower, and preferential support for the organized management body.
