        초등영어교육과정과 연계한 유아영어교육교재의 분석과 개발방향

        The purpose of this study is to improve the quality of preschool English education textbooks based on the elementary English curriculum. The study reviews the current issues of preschool English education and analyzes previous studies on preschool English education for the purpose of identifying the realities of preschool English textbooks as well as preschool English education in Korea. After reviewing eight preschool English textbooks, the study found many textbook series and their teacher's guidebooks do not contain detailed development criteria such as the number of vocabulary and the limit of sentence length according to different preschool pupil age categories in their developing textbooks. The study indicates many words, expressions, and dialogues included in the preschool textbooks are inappropriate for their levels. The study finally insists that preschool textbook developers should consider detailed criteria in closer connection with elementary school textbooks. Related government organizations as well as publishing companies should have the proper reviewing system for better preschool English education textbooks.

        The aim of this paper is to set up a theoretical basis for and a model of elementary English teacher education focused on pre-service teachers' development of English oral skills. The argument provided throughout this paper is that we need lo teach English and English teaching related subjects in English during the English teacher training courses offered in education universities. In order to suggest a model of elementary English teacher education which exemplifies this argument, this paper has been concerned with looking at the problems our current elementary English teacher education program encounters: examining the English developmental stages as found by ESL children: considering the major types of TESOL programs offered in the major universities in the USA: and building of a model of elementary English teacher education. The suggested model advises how each of content areas (e.g.. grammar. composition, phonology. children's literature) is organized and integrated into English teaching methodology in terms of developing pre-service teachers' English language skills and teaching skills.

        From the viewpoint of economy and efficiency, truncation is a very useful and natural phenomenon. Initial effect and uniqueness are important factors in the formation of truncation. This paper tries to shed light on the data of the truncation of English loanwords in Korean. Until now, the studies on the truncation have mainly focused on apocopes. Even though apocopes are much more prominent than aphaereses, aphaereses should be considered important linguistic materials because there are many examples where aphaereses are used in loanwords and hypocoristics in English and Indonesian. In addition, it shows some types of English loanwords which are called Konglish. The distinction between these two types is crucial, since Konglish gives us a negative and unfavorable impression. After that, this paper shows the history of the truncation of English loanwords and the importation channel of them, whether via Japanese or not. We expect that new truncated words which may be different from the source words will be created by the interaction between economic motivation and our needs. Under this condition the responsibility of the English teachers will be strengthened.

        한국어 화자의 영어 억양의 인지에 관한 연구: 담화 내의 초점을 중심으로

        The present study seeks to investigate focus perception of korean speakers. 38 Korean speakers participated in the experiment and they were asked to identify a focused word after listening to 64 utterances of English speakers. Experimental results reveal that the majority of Korean speakers cannot pinpoint the location of the focus in English utterances. English words with a pitch peak tend to be perceived as focused words by Korean speakers. This is similar to the focus perception pattern in Korean. This result suggests that Korean speakers are affected by the intonation patterns of their L1. The findings of the present study are important both empirically and theoretically. Empirically, they provide the basic perceptual data on intonation patterns of Korean speakers. Theoretically, they present systematic data on how the L1 (Korean) intonation system affects L2 (English) intonation patterns.

          This research was designed as a preliminary study of developing a content-based language instruction for engineering students. It focused on analyzing characteristics and needs of Electronics and Computer Engineering students. For the purpose of this study, I conducted surveys on 289 engineering students and 38 professors and instructors to find out their needs and interests on language and content (subject-matter) learning. I also interviewed 16 technicians to recognize their perception of what language skills and content would benefit for engineering students. The results of the needs analysis and interview strongly suggested the need to adopt a content-based teaching and learning model incorporating communicative English for general and specific purposes in the field of computer engineering to accomplish their real-life tasks in future. This study also led us to some issues on the integration of language and content for engineering students and the cooperation of content specialists and language specialists for a language instruction model, Adjunct Instruction. Some issues were discussed for the application of an Adjunct Instruction for engineering students in EFL contexts.

        한국 노인 학습자의 영어 학습동기와 탈동기

        This exploratory mixed-methods study focused on elderly Korean EFL learners’ English learning motivation and demotivation in a lifelong education institute. For semi-structured interviews, three English teachers and nine elderly female EFL learners were invited. By using a grounded theory approach, these interviews were coded and thematically analyzed. Based on the interview analysis, a follow-up, 5-point Likert-scale questionnaire on EFL learning motivation and demotivation was constructed and administered to 393 elderly learners. The study findings suggest that the elderly Korean learners’ EFL learning motivation showed differences in quality from that of younger school-aged population. Desire to overcome everyday inconveniences and intrinsic motivation were found to be two major motivational factors. In terms of demotivation, the participants felt extreme stress in preparing for the Graduation Equivalency Test and showed a high level of anxiety in the difficulties of learning English. The elderly learners did not show a consistent decrease in their motivation, and the demotivation level decreased in a statistically significant manner as their years of learning increased. The findings imply that different English curricula need to be designed and special care must be taken for the elderly EFL learners. (188 words)

        This study is a case analysis on non-face-to-face communicative English language learning conducted in a university during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study is to draw the direction of effective communicative language learning approaches by investigating the students satisfaction and perceptions of the two online teaching types:Asynchronous pre-recorded ‘Video lecture and synchronous ‘Real-time lecture’. This study used both a questionnaire and interviews to examine perceptions and satisfaction of 114 university students (58 students for Video lecture/56 students for Real-time lecture) taking an online general English conversation program. The results showed that the satisfaction level of students in the Video lecture was more statistically significant than that in the Real-time lecture. The students in the Video lecture perceived that the class is effective in terms of ‘interest in learning’ ‘concentration on learning’ and ‘self-directed learning’. The students in the real-time lecture were satisfied with the teacher-student interaction while they revealed difficulties in dealing with the technological issues with small group online activities. In terms of language learning, the Video lecture was helpful to improve listening, speaking and reading skills while the Real-time lecture was helpful to improve listening and speaking skills. Educational implications of this study are discussed. (200 words)

        The purpose of this study was to explore elementary school teachers’ reflective teaching activities on their English classes. The study focused on how teachers evaluated their lessons, developed the level of reflection and applied reflective skills on their classes. Four teachers participated in the case study. The data including reflection journals, field note, self-evaluation check list on their teaching, individual interviews and group discussion responses were qualitatively analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: First, four different themes which were students’ meaningful learning experience, various learning activities, teachers’ challenges and solutions and students’ guidance were identified. Second, three levels of reflection were identified in different contexts. Third, teachers’ lesson satisfaction with application of reflection was various and mainly affected by student’s participation. The results put forward that elaborate reflection tools would need to design for teachers to view their lessons objectively. Practical support would need according to reflection development cycle. Collaborative reflection would also need in order to share teachers’ teaching experiences and pursue their professional development. This study could have significant implications for teachers and teacher educators concerning effectiveness of reflective teaching, English teachers’ role and teachers’ professional development.         This study aimed to provide an overview of the research on second language learning strategies which has been conducted for about 30 years. Based on the representative researchers’ works in the field of second language learning strategies, such as Rubin (1975, 2005), Stern (1975), Oxford (1990, 1993a, 1996), O’Malley and Chamot (1990), and Chamot (1999, 2005), this study outlined the previous research classifying the characteristics of it as beginning (from the mid-70s to the mid-80s), growing (from the mid-80s to the mid-90s), and maturing (from the mid-90s to now). While the researchers were interested in the differences between good language learners and poor language learners in the beginning period, they made great efforts to create objective tools to classify and assess learners’ language learning strategies in the growing period. In the maturing period, they tried to triangulate various methods to understand learners’ use of learning strategies, as well as to teach what strategies to use and how to use them appropriately for a given task in a more individualized way. Descriptions and discussions of respective periods are given, as are further potential research directions.
