Vol.17 No.2

The GFSK Transceiver of 400 MHz ISM band for data communication is designed and fabricated. To reduce the occupied bandwidth of transmitted signal, the GFSK modulation is selected. The measured results of fabricated transceiver show the data rate of 2,400 bps at 8.5 kHz bandwidth, frequency deviation of less than ${\pm}3\;kHz$, sensitivity of -107 dBm at SINAD of 20 dB, BER of less than $1.8{\times}10^{-3}$ at -110 dBm input power. The fabricated transceiver is satisfied with the regulation of radio wave and has the good performance.

『베니스의 상인』(The Merchant of Venice)에 나타난 이원론의 해체

Vol.- No.29

The main conflict of The Merchant of Venice is one between a Jew, Shylock and a Christian Antonio. This conflict ends in a triumph of Antonio and a defeat of a Jew Shylock. Shylock is deprived of his daughter, money and even his religious identity because he is turned out to be one who tries to kill an innocent Christian Antonio. Because of the tragedy of Shylock, an argument in defining this drama as a comedy has been consistent, which is different from a traditional comedy even though it ends in happy marriages of three couples of lovers. In some criticisms, Shakespeare has been criticized as a defender of anti-Judaism or as a defender of anti-Christianism. That is because in the drama Shylock is presented as a sort of devil who seeks to kill a Christian, Antonio who transgressed against his bond with the Jew, and at the same time the Christian Antonio is depicted as a merciless person who scorned Jews and their commercial activities in Venice. Shakespeare provides Shylock with enough reason to have a desire to revenge against the Christians. Meanwhile Shakespeare also presents Antonio as a Christ figure who shows self-less love towards his friend to extent that he risks his life to have his friend get married to a beautiful wealthy woman. In one aspect Shakespeare shows anti-Judaism through the villain Shylock and an good Christian Antonio, however, in other respect he shows anti-Christianity through presenting the egoist Christian Bassanio, Antonio and Portia. This essay focused on the ambivalent aspects of two sides and discussed Shakespeare's attempt of destroying boundaries of good and evil in this drama. Consequently, from an objective viewpoint there is no absolute good and absolute evil. As shown in the dialogue between Bassanio and Portia in the last scene of the drama, while they are talking about the viewpoint of day and night, according to the place where they are now, the day and the night is oppositely determined. Judgement results in the way of distinguish things according to viewer's stance and his environment and that is the way dualism may have conflicts. Shakespeare shows his extraordinary insight through which he demolishes the boundaries between Judaism and Christianism and good and evil. Ultimately he suggests that overcoming the dualism may be the wisest way to overcome the tragedy of life.

Vol.51 No.3

The Merchant of Venice has a contrasting structure with a number of juxtaposed and contrasting elements in it. Shakespeare leads us to see the duplicity and the dualistic viewpoint of human beings through the contrasting attitudes of a Jew and a Christian. One of the most distinguished contrasting things in the juxtaposed and contrasting elements of Venice and Belmont is the value of the visible things and the invisible things. Venice could be considered a center of commercial trades, while Belmont as a center of romantic love. In Venice, poor Bassanio wants to go to Belmont to woo the rich heiress Portia and to do so he borrows money from his friend Antonio. Antonio doesn’t have cash to afford the needs of Bassanio so he borrows the money from the Jew, Shylock. Antonio shows extreme friendship by risking his own life, while the Jew Shylock wants to have his daughter, Jessica, back as dead with his lost bags of ducats and precious stones. In Venice, the value of visible things is focused on the job of usurer and a bond that Shylock maintains to the end against a Christian, Antonio. In Belmont, suitors come from all over the world to court Portia according to the will of her dead father. It states that who chooses the right casket can marry Portia. One of the suitors, Bassanio chooses the visibly most invaluable lead casket which holds the most valuable picture of Portia. In Venice, Shylock is sentenced to lose all his possessions instead of succeeding in taking the vengeance he desires while in Belmont Bassanio succeeds in marrying Portia and receiving happy news of Antonio’s recovery of his wealth. In Venice the usurer Shylock could not keep his wealth or the daughter that he has tried hard to keep, while in Belmont Bassanio gets the fortune without effort or virtue. Portia is supposed to follow her father’s will but she lets Bassanio get a hint to choose the right casket by her own will. These contrasting elements deliver the message that life depends not only on one’s own will but also on Fortune. The drama ends with the ado about rings that Bassanio and Gratiano gave to the disguised lawyer and the clerk, Portia and Nerrisa. Through this final scene we get the writer’s message that the law or the ring is the only sign of justice or love, not the substantial entity itself. Real value is invisible justice and love, not the mere sign of justice, the law and sign of love, the ring. As mentioned above, the theme ideas of The Merchant of Venice are revealed effectively through the juxtaposed and contrast elements of Venice and Belmont.

A Vol.33 No.8

In the manufacturing process of HDD, ball swaging method is commonly used to joint the Head Gimbal Assembly(HGA) with the arm of the actuator. The hub on the HGA is placed into the hole of the actuator arm, and the hub and arm is bonded by the pressure of steel ball. The pressure for plastic deformation on the baseplate causes the undesirable deformation on HGA, such as tilting, flying height change of head. After obtaining the key parameters that have large sensitivity on the swaging process, the optimal shape of baseplate is proposed to increase the static performance during swaging process. Contribution of the proposed design for the swaging performance is verified by contact simulation with elasto-plastic deformation.

Vol.59 No.1

This essay is focused on a common theme, a wish for returning to Wholeness of the heroes of Hamlet, Othello and The Winter’s Tale. The internalized fear of the female sexuality is illustrated by the anger and jealousy of heroes’ contaminated women in Shakespeare’s works. Hamlet’s excessive fury about the seemingly contaminated mother projects his strong shadowy wish for re-owning holy Life Source, Wholeness. Othello’s love for Desdemona began from Desdemona’s maternal pity for Othello’s predicaments. From the first, Othello pursued the special maternal love of Desdemona, which should be constant and clean forever. The excessive suspicion against Desdemona projects the fear of betrayal of the female sexuality, the Life Force, which can be kept in safety only by ceasing through murder. Leontes, the hero of The Winter’s Tale abused his innocent wife and daughter misbelieving that his wife cheated on him. After 16 years of painful repentance he recovers his wife, Hermione, who has been kept in a stone statue and daughter, Perdita, a symbol of Natural Life Force. All three heroes projected their fear about female sexuality on the infidelity of women. Their underlying fearfulness for the possibility of contamination of the pure Source, Mother, is projected on their wish for returning to the pure Wholeness. While Hamlet and Othello have tragic outcomes, Leontes ends up re-owning his home. This conclusion implies that Being with the ultimate Wholeness could come from overcoming the internalized fearfulness about female sexuality.(Daejeon University)

Vol.41 No.1

Measure for Measure has been criticized as an inferior play mainly because the characters have no consistency in their personalities and behaviors. This play, however, can be understood wholly when we see it through the mirror structure. Both Angelo and Isabella, like legalists who follow strict rules of conduct, may seem righteous. But Measure for Measure warns against the subtle dangers of legalism. Measure for Measure has a structure like the parable of the unmerciful servant from the bible, who refuses to forgive a debtor even after his own lord has had much more mercy on himself. Though Angelo may seem righteous, he himself has same lust for women and has sinned as Claudio, whom he wants to judge. Isabella may seem innocent and virtuous, but she has the same cold and inhumane characteristics that Angelo has. The Duke may seem holy and generous, he also turns out to have a lust for women as Angelo and Claudio, which is the main source of sins. All the characters mirror themselves unto the others, but they can not find themselves in the mirrors of others. The main fault of characters is that they do not see themselves rather than that they are conscious hypocrites. This drama tells us that any man may not judge any other while he himself has sins which have to be judged by God. The role of Law is not only to punish the sinners but also to reflect what the sin is. As one should reflect himself in the mirror in order to clean the dirty parts of his face, we have to see ourselves in the mirrors, which personify others. Shakespeare suggests that 'seeing correctly' is the first step to being righteous and keeping social order and moral order in this world.
