Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are plasticizer materials widely used in industrial areas to produce plastic products including children’s toys, construction materials, packing materials, and medical devices. PAEs are known as one of the endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) which can induce reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, teratogenicity, mutagenesis, and developmental toxicity. However, there is no information about the effect of exposure of PAEs on real aquatic environments. Measured environmental concentration (MEC) of PAEs is commonly low level in river environments even lower than individual level toxicity concentration. But PAEs concentration in biota is highly magnified. The toxic effect of PAEs in the environment should be considered with the complexity of higher system above the individual level. Ecological effects including change of trophic structure and species population can be simulated by using the AQUATOX model. In this study, ecological effects of PAEs are measured as biomass density change of biota in the Yeongsan river by using 10 years of monitoring data. Furthermore, AQUATOX model simulations for PAEs are evaluated and validated by comparing the tendency of biomass density from AQUATOX model simulation and monitored concentrations of PAEs.
