      • 산개성단 IC4665 내에 있는 변광성 빈도

        The aim of this study was to investigate the variable star frequency in open cluster IC4665. For this, We observed the cluster using 4inch refrator telescope and CCD camera. After that, we searched variable star candidates. If the magnitude change of a star is larger than three times of standard deviation, we identified the star as a variable. we found that the varible star frequency of open cluster IC4665 is about 20%. 본 연구의 목적은 산개성단 IC4665를 CCD 관측을 수행하여 변광성을 찾는 것이다. 이를 위해 4인치 굴절망원경에 CCD 카메라를 연결하여 IC4665를 관측한 다음, 이 성단 내에 포함된 변광성을 찾았다. 성단내 구성원들의 변광성을 찾는 방법은 별의 밝기 변화가 관측의 허용오차보다 3배 이상 벗어난 별들을 변광성으로 판정하였다. 그 결과 측광한 93개의 성단 구성원 별들 중, 19개인 약 20%의 별이 변광성임을 알 수 있었다.

        Bioactivity evaluations of betulin identified from the bark of Betula platyphylla var. japonica for cancer therapy

        Identification of bioactive natural products withanticancer activity as well as alleviating effects onchemotherapy-induced side effects has significant implicationsfor cancer treatment. Betula platyphylla var. japonica, commonly known as Asian white birch, has beenused in Chinese traditional medicine for a variety of purposes. In this study, the medicinal properties of betulinfrom B. platyphylla var. japonica useful for cancer managementwere investigated. LC/MS analysis revealed thatbetulin is a main chemical component of the EtOH extractof B. platyphylla var. japonica bark, and betulin was isolatedfrom EtOH extract using an LC/MS-guided isolationmethod. Its structure was identified with 1H and 13C NMRspectroscopic data and LC/MS analysis and then comparedto the previously reported spectroscopic and physical data. We first verified the cytotoxicity of betulin against threehuman lung adenocarcinoma cell lines, A549, H1264, andCalu-6, with IC50 values ranging from 18.7 to 39.6 lM. Regarding alleviation of side effects associated with anticancerchemotherapy, betulin ameliorated cisplatin-inducedrenal cell damage to 80% of the control value fromthe concentration of 5 lM. In addition, betulin showedanti-gastritis activity against ethanol-induced gastric damagein rats and notably reduced the gastric damage indexcompared to control in a concentration-dependent manner. These findings provide the first experimental evidence forpotential use of B. platyphylla var. japonica as a functionalfood for cancer treatment that simultaneously alleviates theside effects of chemotherapy.

        In Vivo Kinetics and Biodistribution of a HIV-1 DNA Vaccine After Administration in Mice

        In this study we have investigated the pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution of GX-12, amultiple plasmid DNA vaccine for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Plasmid DNA was rapidlydegraded in blood with a half-life of 1.34 min and was no longer detectable at 90 min afterintravenous injection in mice. After intramuscular injection, plasmid DNA concentration in theinjection site rapidly declined to less than 1% of the initial concentration by 90 min post-injection. However, sub-picogram levels (per mg tissue) were occasionally detected for severaldays after injection. The relative proportions of the individual plasmids of GX-12 remained relativelyconstant at the injection site until 90 min post-injection. The concentration of plasmidDNA in tissues other than the injection site peaked at 90 min post-injection and decreased toundetectable levels at 8 h post-injection. The rapid in vivo degradation of GX-12 and absenceof persistence in non-target tissues suggest that the risk of potential gene-related toxicities byGX-12 administration, such as expression in non-target tissues, insertional mutagenesis andgermline transmission, is minimal.
