Background: Glycyrrhiza uralensis Radix (GR) is a crude drugs used in Asian countries that has been reported to prevent the progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. The present study examined whether GR and its active compounds, glycyrrhizic acid (GA) and isoliquiritigenin (IL), exerted protective effects on $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative damage in C6 glial cells. Methods and Results: We exposed C6 glial cells to hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) for 24 h and investigated the cellular response to GR and its active compounds by evaluating cell viability, reactivie oxygen species (ROS) production, and apoptosis-related protein expression. GR successfully mitigated the reduced cell viability and ROS production induced by $H_2O_2$ in C6 glial cells, IL and GA significantly increased the cell viability and decreased ROS production. In addition, IL and GA down-regulated apoptotic Baxdependent caspase-3 activation, but each compound exerted different mechanisms, i.e., IL dose-dependently decreased ROS production and, GA up-regulated anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 expression. Conclusions: These results demonstrated that GR and its active components, IL and GA, exhibit potential for use as natural neurodegenerative agents for the modulation of apoptosis in C6 glial cells.

Background and Objectives: Subacute necrotizing lymphadenitis or Kikuchi's disease has now become recognized in many parts of the world as a well-defined clinicopathologic entity. It typically affects cervical lymph nodes of young women, and subsides spontaneously within a few months without recurrences. The purpose of this study is to report the clinicopathologic finding, radiologic finding and many laboratory tests to elaborate the criteria that are useful in distinguishing this entity from inflammatory disease, granulomatous disease, lymphoma, malignant disease. Material and Methods: Authors evaluated 22 patients, who were diagnosed as subacute necrotizing lymphadenitis on excisional biopsy or fine needle aspiration cytology with retrospective chart review. Results: The patient population consisted of 21 women and 1 men. The mean age was 25 years old(range 17 to 42 years). All patient had palpable neck mass and associated fever, headache, weight loss, otalgia, diarrhea, night sweating. and associated disorder is dermatitis, hepatitis B, SLE, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, albinism et al. The multiple bilateral involvement of cervical lymph node was 20 cases(91%) and multiple unilateral 18 cases(82%), multiple bilateral 2 cases(9%). Solitary involvement was 2 cases(9%), mean size of involved lymph node was 2.0cm. In laboratory tests, leukopenia 17 cases(72%), elevated ESR 12 cases(54%), elevated GOT, GPT 3 cases(13%). In CT finding, lymph nodes enhanced in homogeneous fashion, and there was no evidence of central necrosis. Conclusion: Subacute necrotizing lymphadenitis, Kikuchi's disease may be easily confused clinically, pathologically, radiologically with malignant lymphoma, inflammatory disease, granulomatous disease. We should consider open biopsy of lymph node in the patient which had unilateral multiple cervical lymph node and in laboratory tests, were leukopenia, elevated ESR, especially in young women. otherwise, result of fine needle aspiration biopsy is nonspecific, excisional biopsy is recommended in order to differentiate other disease.

Objective: Little is known about factors influencing of hippocampal metabolism (HM) in mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Our objective was to determine whether HM in patients with amnestic MCI (aMCI) is decreased than non-amnestic MCI (naMCI). Methods: Overall, 32 MCI patients underwent 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography. They were characterized as aMCI (n=18) or naMCI (n=14) according to comprehensive neuropsychological criteria. Analysis of variances were used to assess differences on HM between aMCI and naMCI after controlling age, sex, education and Korean version of Mini Mental Status Examination. Results: We found that HM was more decreased in aMCI than naMCI. This result was not changed after controlling hippocampal volume. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that aMCI is associated with decreased HM in MCI.

N/A Background: Epidural anesthesia is now accepted as a popular technique for pain relief and anesthesia. However, accidental dural puncture may occur during placement of the epidural needle. This study was undertaken to evaluate difference of the epidural depth between parturients and non-parturients. Method: Eighty non-parturients receiving epidural anesthesia were assigned to group I, and eighty parturients whose body weight had not yet increased over 15 kg from pregnancy were assigned to group II. With patients in lateral decubitus position, 18 guage Tuohy needle was punctured by approaching at L interspace. Epidural space was identified using loss-of-resistance to air technique. Result: Epidural depth was 4.18 cm and 4.25 cm in group I and group II respectively. There was no significant statistical difference in body mass index(BMI) and ponderal index(PI) (p < 0.05), nor in epidural depth between the two groups. Conclusion: Epidural. needle need not be placed deeper in parturients than in nonparturients

무선 네트워크에서 기반시설이 필요 없는 MANET(Mobile Ad Hoc Networks)과 이동 노드의 이동성을 보장하기 위해 제안된 Mobile IP를 통합하려는 시도에 대한 연구가 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 노드들의 이동성 서비스를 지원하기 위해 통합 망에서 애드 혹 네트워크의 이동 노드들의 정보를 유지하기 위한 메커니즘인 MAAM과 AMAAM에서 이동노드들의 패킷 전송에 필요한 에너지와 패킷 수신에 필요한 에너지 소모량을 비교함으로서 제어패킷으로 인한 에너지 소모량을 비교 분석한다. 성능 평가는 NS-2를 이용하여 시뮬레이션 하였다.

무선 통신 기술의 발달로 인터넷 환경이 점차 유무선 통합 환경으로 바뀌어 가고 있다. 이에 따라 Mobile IP와 MANET(Mobile Ad Hoc Networks)을 통합하려는 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있다 . 또한 유무선 통합망에서 이동노드들을 관리하기 위한 기법으로 AMAAM(Aggregation based Mobility Agent Advertisement Mechanism)이 제안되었다. AMAAM은 에이전트 광고메시지에 대한 응답으로 등록메시지를 에이전트에게 전달하는데 이 과정에서 중간노드가 취합(aggregation)하여 에이전트에게 전달하는 메커니즘으로 중간 노드가 일정 대기시간(Wait-time) 동안 기다리면서 등록메시지를 취합하게 된다. 하지만, 이동노드들의 이동으로 인해 빈번한 네트워크 변화가 발생하게 된다. 또한 중간 노드들이 등록메시지를 취합하기 위해 대기하는 시간은 에이전트와의 거리 즉, 홉수에 따라 달라진다. 본 논문에서는 홉수에 따른 최적의 대기시간을 구하기 위해 NS2 시뮬레이션을 이용해 응답메시지수와 에너지 잔존량으로 그 성능을 평가한다.

유비쿼터스 환경에 가장 적합한 통신 기술로 고려되고 있는 IEEE 802.15 표준은 WPAN(Wireless Personal Area Network) 즉, 비교적 짧은 거리에서 휴대하여 이동할 수 있는 장치들이 주위의 다른 장치들과 통신이 가능하도록 만든 무선 네트워크 통신 표준이다. 그 중에서 IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee 기술은 하나의 PAN(Personal Area Network) 영역에서만 동작을 하고, 이웃한 PAN과의 동작을 고려하지 않고 설계되었다. 따라서 유비쿼터스 환경을 고려해 볼 때 이웃한 PAN 영역사이의 원활한 통신이 이루어지지 않는 문제점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 이웃한 PAN영역사이의 원활한 통신을 위한 기법을 제시하기 위해 WPAN의 문제점을 분석하고, NS-2 시뮬레이션을 통해 WPAN에서 PAN 영역에 따른 트래픽 Load와 에너지 효율을 비교 분석한다.
