      • 家兎의 子宮內膜增殖症에 對한 Progesterone의 作用

        Experimentally the author studied-on whether the prolonged injection of a certain dosis of estrogen alone in rabbit can produce the endometrial hyperplasia or not, and how the progesterone does influence on the endometrial hyperplasia. The results were as follows: 1. The typical endometrial hyperplasia was producded by the injection of 10,000 IU. of estrogen for 20 days. 2. Above hyperplastic endometria! growth was suppressed by the injection of 40 mg. of progesterone partially and perfectly by 50 mg. of progesterone. 3. The necrotic changes in above endometrial hyperplasia which were produced by the long period injection of 10.000 I.U. of estrogen, could be caused by injection of 40 mg. of progesterone partially and 50 mg. of it perfectly.

      • Estrogen 大量長期投與가 家兎子宮 및 腎組織의 水分 및 電解質에 미치는 影響

        The author attemted to clarifty the effects of sex hormones on electrolytes in the uterus and kidney of mature female rabbits weighing about 2㎏. Determination of electrolyte level of the uterus, and of the kidney after administration of estrogen 50,000 I. U. daily for two weeks following castration was undertaken. More specifically, the levels of Cl, Na, K, Ca, Mg and water content in the tissues of the organs mentioned above were determined. Difference in electrolytes levels and water content in theses organs was observed. Flame-photometer was used for the determination of Na and K levels, and Schales and Schales method for Cl content, and Kovacs and Tarrnoky's method for Ca and Mg content. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Serum electrolyte level of female rabbits following castration was not affected but the long term administration of estrogen of large doses to the castrated rabbits produced a maked decrease in Ca content. 2. Castration of female rabbits produced a marked increase in Cl and Ca levels and a decrease in Mg level in the uterus. The long term administration of estrogen of large doses to the castrated rabbits showed a marked increase in Na, K, Ca and Mg levels in the uterus. 3. Castration of female rabbits produced a marked decrease in K level in the kidney, wherease the long term administration of estrogen of a large dose to the castrated rabbits produced a marked increase in Cl, Na and K levels. 4. Difference in water content in the kidney and the uterus of female rabbits of normal, castrated, and estrogen-injected groups showed no significant change. 5. Cl content of normal, castrated and estrogen-injected female rabbits was prominently higher in the renal tissue than in the uterine tissue. 6. Na content of normal, castrated and estrogen-injected female rabbits was prominently higher in the renal tissue than in the uterine tissue. 7. K level of normale rabbit was prominently higher in the renal tissue than in the uterine tissue. On the contrary, castration and a long term administration of estrogen of large dose did not affect k level in the rabbits. 8. Ca level of normal and castrated female rabbits showed prominently higher in the renal tissue than in the uterine tissuse. The long term administration of estrogen of large dose produced decrease in the renal tissue than in the uterine tissue. 9. Mg level of normal, castrated aid estrogen-injected female rabbits in the renal tissue showed prominently higher than in the uterine tissue.

      • Neuroprotection in Neonatal Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy

        본 증례는 폐기물 저장탱크에 장기간 보관된 분뇨를 청소하던 4명의 선원이 급성 중독으로 2명은 사망하고 2명은 생존하였다. 다음날 실시한 작업환경 측정결과 황화수소 농도가 150 ppm 이상 측정되어 황화수소 중독에 의한 사고로 판명되었다. 사망자의 사망원인은 황화수소 중독으로 의식을 잃고 쓰러지면서 저장탱크에 고인 물속에 잠겨 기도 확보가 되지 않아 생긴 익사로 추정된다. 생존자는 100% 산소와 지지치료 만으로 회복되었다. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), one of the most poisonous gases, is usually encountered in various occupations as a byproduct. Four crew were collapsed in a waste storage tank while they were cleaning it. Immediately they were rescued, but two crew died and two crew survived. Gas analysis in the waste storage tank showed high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (above 150 ppm) after one day. The causes of death were asphyxiation because their face fell into mixed water with collapsed state, not due to H2S intoxication. The victims completely recovered with supportive care, including 100% normobaric oxygen.

        Decreasing Incidence of Chronic Lung Disease Despite the Gradual Reduction of Postnatal Dexamethasone Use in Very Low Birth Weight Infants

        Dexamethasone has been widely used in very low birth weight infants (VLBWI) weighing less than 1,500 g at birth for the prevention or treatment of chronic lung disease (CLD). Recently, however the use of dexamethasone is being reduced, as its association with abnormal neurodevelopmental outcome is known. On the other hand, there have been persistent concerns about the increased risk of CLD accord-ing to the reduction of postnatal dexamethasone use. Hence, we did a retrospective cohort study to delineate the change in the incidence of CLD according to the reduc-tion of dexamethasone use in VLBWI. The medical records of 559 VLBWI admit-ted to neonatal intensive care unit at Samsung Medical Center between Novem-ber 1994 and December 2002 were reviewed with a focus on the use of postnatal dexamethasone and the incidence of CLD. The use of postnatal dexamethasone has significantly decreased over the study period. Especially, the use of high-dose regimen has markedly decreased. The day when postnatal dexamethasone thera-py was begun has also been significantly delayed. The incidence of CLD has sig-nificantly decreased over the same period. In conclusion, the incidence of CLD has not increased despite the decreased use of postnatal dexamethasone.
