We present the beam test results of a real-sized prototype resistive plate chamber (RPC) for the high- region of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) under a high-radiation environment up to 2 kHz/cm2. Particularly, we emphasize the effects of a linseed oil treatment on the surfaces of bakelite plates for avalanche-mode operation. The improved quality of the bakelite surface due to the linseed oil coating results in a significant reduction in the intrinsic noise rate and the dark current without affecting the muon detection efficiency. At the same time, the noise cluster size is somewhat increased by the linseed oil treatment, especially, under no radiation background.

We present the design and the test results for a real-sized prototype resistive plate chamber by using cosmic-ray muons for the forward region of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In particular, we investigate the effects of adding SF6 to the gas mixture for the avalanche mode operation of a resistive plate chamber. A small fraction of SF6 is very effective in suppressing streamer signals in a resistive plate chamber. The shapes of the muon detection efficiency and the muon cluster size remain similar, but are shifted to higher operating voltage by SF6. The noise cluster rate and size are not influenced by SF6.

We present the beam-test results for a real-size prototype resistive plate chamber (RPC) for the endcap region of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The chamber built with relatively low resistivity bakelite was tested at the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) at CERN under a high photon-flux environment with an effective cluster rate up to about 1.2 kHz/cm2. The characteristics of the present chamber are compatible with the previous results for the muon detection effciency, time resolustion, mean travel time, and rate capability, which were obtained using a higher resistivity bakelite. The present beam-test results ensure that the RPC made of relatively low resistivity bakelite is also suitable for the CMS muon trigger detector. In addition, we study the position resolution of the endcap RPC of the CMS. By using the median position of the cluster strips, the position resolution can be reduced to only half of the strip width.

The CANDU type reactors require on power refuelling by the two remotely controlled fuelling machines. The refuelling operation is carried out along the coolant direction by the drag force of fuel bundles for most channels. However, for about 30% of channels the coolant flow is not sufficiently high enough to carry fuel bundles to the downstream. Therefore, a device, FARE (Flow Assist Ram Extension) device, is used to create an additional drag force to push the fuel bundles along the coolant flow. The FARE device has been causing the channel flow low phenomena of channels due to more than excessive blockage of coolant flow. The flow rate change for the channels is monitored on line for the coolant flow blockage of the channels. This has initiated the investigation of the FAKE device behavior and the cause and remedy for the problem. The analysis revealed that the channel flow low occurs as the insertion of the FARE device into the active core flow and disappears as the removal of the FARE device from it. In order to eliminate the channel flow low phenomena, flow resistance by the FARE device should be reduced. The analysis has revealed that a too much relaxation of flow resistance would make the FARE device unable to push the fuel bundle string, and a too little relaxation would make the FARE device unable to eliminate the channel flow low phenomena. Suggested design changes include more flow holes in the tube.

This paper presents the method of Rate of Loading(ROL) improvement for the Motor Operated Gate Valve operating in high differential pressure condition. The character of ROL and Stem Factor is analyzed. Static test and dynamic test were performed and acquired the diagnosis signal for the valve closing stroke. The result of this study is the modification of stem factor is very important factor for the ROL improvement. In order to obtain the same value of dynamic test thread friction coefficient, stem and stem nut should be combined appropriately.
