The prupose of this study was examine the effects of FES on pelvic muscle intensity in urinary incontinence patients and examine how they feel after FES therapy. The subjects were 19 adult women admitted for U.I in a university hospital. The mean age of the sample was 38.43 years(SD=8.20). They had totally 12 times of FES therapy for 6 weeks(2 times per 1 week). Perineometer was used to measure intravaginal pressure and the Urinary Symptom Questionaire was used to investigate the degree of discomfort of the subject at the time of before and after FES therapies. The data were collected from 31 Dec. 1997 to 31 Jan. 1998 and analyzed by Wilcoxon 2-related Sample test with SPSS/PC program. The major findings of the study are as follows: 1. Discomfort related to urinary frequency on pre and post care The mean of discomfort which was caused by urinary frequency during daytime and activity time was the highst before FES (M=2.895, SD=0.671). The mean of discomfort which was caused by uncontrolled urination on coughing, sneezing, exercising was the highest on post care(M=1.684, SD=0.671) Especially, discomfort caused by urinary frequency during day time and activity time was significantly decreased after FES therapy(P<0.1). 2. The mean of discomfort related to sexual life induced by urination problem was the highest before FES therapy(M=1.632, SD=0.761). The mean of discomfort related to pain of displeasure induced by the driness of vagina was the highest(M=1.526, SD=0.871) and discomfort was not improved. 3. Discomfort related to routine activities on pre and post care. Discomfort related to body activity difficulty(e. g : walking, dancing, swim-ming) induced by U.I. was the highest in mean before FES therapy. On post care, discomfort related to body activity difficulty, drinking water frequency and routine life difficulty was the highest in mean. Mostly, on post care, discomfort was decreased in all items. 4. Difference's of discomfort between pre and post care In the difference's of discomfort urinary symptom, routine life, urination activity and sexual activity were significantly different between pre and post care. 5. Difference's of pelvic muscle intensity and time between pre and post FES. In the difference's of pelvic muscle intensity and time intensity P<.01 and time P<.01 were significantly different between pre and post. 6. Satisfaction with urination state on pre and post FES. The most uncomfortable urination symptom was uncontrolled urination before FES therapy. Satisfaction with urination condition was significantly increased P<.01 after FES.
