The purpose of this research is to obtain the data for quality control of recycled aggregates product and use by examine the correlations among physical properties of recycled aggregate made of crushed waste concrete. For this purpose, we tested the physical properties of 7 recycled coarse aggregates and 10 recycled fine aggregates according to Korea Standards. As a result, we proposed the correlation equations for physical properties of recycled aggregates. Although the correlations among physical properties of recycled fine aggregates and recycled coarse aggregates showed some quantitative differences, this research revealed their similar tendencies.

Background/Aims: First-line therapies against Helicobacter pylori, including proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) plus two antibiotics, may fail in up to 20% of patients. ``Rescue`` therapy is usually needed for patients who failed the first-line treatment. This study evaluated the eradication rate of bismuth-containing quadruple rescue therapy over a 1- or 2-week period. Methods: We prospectively investigated 169 patients with a persistent H. pylori infection after the first-line triple therapy, which was administered from October 2008 to March 2010. The patients were randomized to receive a 1- or 2-week quadruple rescue therapy (pantoprazole 40 mg b.i.d., tripotassium dicitrate bismuthate 300 mg q.i.d., metronidazole 500 mg t.i.d., and tetracycline 500 mg q.i.d.). After the ``rescue`` therapy, the eradication rate, compliance, and adverse events were evaluated. Results: The 1-week group achieved 83.5% (71/85) and 87.7% (71/81) eradication rates in the intention to treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) analyses, respectively. The 2-week group obtained 87.7% (72/84) and 88.9% (72/81) eradication rate in the ITT and PP analyses, respectively. There was no significant difference in the eradication rate, patient compliance or rate of adverse events between the two groups. Conclusions: One-week bismuth-containing quadruple therapy can be as effective as a 2-week therapy after the failure of the first-line eradication therapy. (Gut Liver 2012;6:434-439)

High-frequency bistatic sea surface scattering channels according to sea state were measured at an experimental site of Geoje bay in April 2020, and compared with predictions based on scattering theory. A linear frequency-modulated signal with a center frequency of 128 kHz and a bandwidth of 32 kHz was used for the acoustic measurements. Sea surface wavenumber spectrum was calculated from surface roughness data measured by a wave buoy, and bistatic scattering cross-section of Small Slope Approximation (SSA) based on the wavenumber spectrum was estimated. In addition, scattering from near-surface bubbles using wind speed measured during experiments was considered. Surface scattering channel intensity impulse responses were simulated using the scattering cross-section and the simulation results were compared and analyzed with the field data.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Development of materials highly resistant to harsh conditions (including ultra-high temperature) has been a crucial issue for the development of next-generation hyper velocity vehicles. HfC-SiC ceramics have been attractive as suitable candidates for these applications owing to their extraordinarily high melting temperatures. Here, HfC-SiC ceramics with ultra-fine grains, prepared via reactive spark plasma sintering, were tested under an oxyacetylene torch flame for relatively long exposure times (5–30 min). The oxidation behaviors of the samples were carefully characterized by microstructural analysis. Although porous structures were formed due to the generation and escape of gas phases, the mixture of oxidized species composed of HfO2 granules and melted SiO2 phase, acted as an excellent barrier under the condition of severe high-temperature oxidation.</P>

Objectives:This study was aimed to investigate the changes in metabolic syndrome (MetS) status and long-term impact of its components over a 10-year period in severe mental illness (SMI) patients in a national mental hospital. Methods:A total of 93 patients (schizophrenia=88, bipolar disorder=5) who met the diagnosis of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition, text revision (DSM-IV-TR) and participated in the MetS study in 2011 were included. MetS was defined by revised National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III (revised NCEP-ATP-III) guidelines. Results:The prevalence of MetS was significantly increased from 40.9% in 2011 to 60.2% in 2020. There were significant differences in admission status and hospitalization months, compared to the groups with and without MetS. Upon reviewing the changes over a decade, systolic blood pressure (SBP) was a significant factor in the group without MetS. In the group with MetS, SBP, waist circumference, and BMI (body mass index) were significant factors. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that hospitalization during follow-up periods [odds ratio (OR)=0.969, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.948-0.991] and BMI (OR=1.426, 95% CI: 1.196-1.701) were significantly associated with MetS in subjects. Conclusion:The prevalence of MetS in patients with SMI significantly increased over time. The admission status and hospitalization were also confirmed to be the significant values of MetS.

Currently, endoscopic endonasal reduction and transcaruncular reduction are frequently used as surgical treatments for medial orbital wall fractures. However, these 2 surgical techniques have not been comprehensively compared using objective criteria. Therefore, the results of these 2 techniques were compared retrospectively using 8 objective criteria in patients with medial orbital wall fracture. This study included 48 medial orbital wall fracture patients treated from June 1993 to July 2006: 29 had endoscopic endonasal reduction and 19 had transcaruncular reduction. Computed tomographic scans, double vision field testing for diplopia using Goldmann perimetry, and Hertel exophthalmometer (Richmond Products, Albuquerque, NM) were done pre- and postsurgery. The average follow-up period was 70.8 months. Among patients with pure medial orbital wall fractures, the average reduction rate was 89.2% for the endoscopic endonasal reduction group and 90.7% for the transcaruncular reduction group. One case in the endoscopic endonasal reduction group had a more than 2-mm enophthalmos after surgery. The diplopia correction rate was 1.8% in the endoscopic endonasal reduction group and 2.7% in the transcaruncular reduction group. None of the above differences was statistically significant. However, among patients with pure medial orbital wall fractures compared with the transcaruncular reduction group, the average operation time, the average hospital stay, and the average cost were significantly greater in the endoscopic endonasal reduction group. The 2 surgical methods had a similar effectiveness; however, transcaruncular reduction seemed to be more advantageous with respect to the operation time, the length of hospital stay, and cost.

The objective of this study was carried out to assess genetic diversity of Korean local accessions of wild pear using morphological traits and microsatellite markers. Assessment of 14 phenotypic traits showed high variation among wild pear accessions. These parameters were not applicable genetic diversity analysis of wild pear collection due to quantitatively inherit and their expression is affected by environmental factors. Microsatellite markers were used to evaluate the genetic similarity of 62 accessions. Among 50 tested SSR markers, 16 primer pairs were selected to profile genetic diversity on the basis of high level polymorphism. These microsatellite markers showed 1 or 2 discrete amplified fragment for all of the accessions. The sixteen microsatellite loci amplified 278 alleles, with 10 to 27 alleles (average 17.385) per locus. The mean of observed heterozygosity and polymorphism information content were 0.776 and 0.836, respectively. The Jaccard’s similarity coefficient ranged from 0.09 to 1.00. Two major groups were produced from all the accessions by UPGMA cluster analysis. Fifty five accessions could be discriminated except for 2 pairs. These results would be provided useful information about valuable genetic resources though assessment of genetic diversity and relationship in local pear accessions.
