      • A stable and highly efficient visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution porous CdS/WO<sub>3</sub>/TiO<sub>2</sub> photocatalysts

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>It is well known that both catalytic efficiency and stability are the two important parameters of photocatalysts for visible-light-driven hydrogen production reactions. However, light-driven hydrogen evolution based applications still suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics due to the lack of high-performance photocatalysts. In this paper, we successfully synthesized a ternary porous CdS/WO<SUB>3</SUB>/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> photocatalyst with high efficiency and stability via two-stage approach. The as-prepared samples are characterized by XRD, FESEM, EDS, TEM, XPS, and UV–Vis, respectively, which illustrated that the CdS and WO<SUB>3</SUB> moieties are in-situ formed inside the porous TiO<SUB>2</SUB>. Particularly, the photocatalytic hydrogen (H<SUB>2</SUB>) evolution rate of such ternary 8% CdS/WO<SUB>3</SUB>/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> (molar ration of CdS:WO<SUB>3</SUB>:TiO<SUB>2</SUB> = 8:8:100) photocatalyst ranges up to 2106 μmol h<SUP>−1</SUP> g<SUP>−1</SUP> under visible-light irradiation, which is higher than that of pure TiO<SUB>2</SUB> and other binary (CdS/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> and WO<SUB>3</SUB>/TiO<SUB>2</SUB>) porous photocatalysts. The superior H<SUB>2</SUB> evolution efficiency can be attributed to the coexistence of CdS and WO<SUB>3</SUB> in porous TiO<SUB>2</SUB> which can promote the interfacial charge transfer and separation as well as extend the light absorption up to the visible range.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Highly efficient and stable photocatalytic activity of CdS/WO<SUB>3</SUB>/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> photocatalysts were synthesized by a two-step method. </LI> <LI> CdS and WO<SUB>3</SUB> inlaid on porous TiO<SUB>2</SUB> can extend the light absorption and enhance photogenerated electron-hole pairs separation. </LI> <LI> The porous structure can provide more reaction active sites and improve photoproduced-electrons and holes transport speed. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical Abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Two new compounds, 2, 3, 5-trimethyl-6-(3-oxobutan-2-yl)-4H-pyran-4-one (1) and (2R)-2, 3-dihydro-7-hydroxy-6, 8-dimethyl-2-[(E)-prop-1-enyl] chromen-4-one (2), together with six known compounds (3-8), were isolated from a deep-sea fungus, identified as Aspergillus sydowi, by a bioassay-guided method. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and the cytotoxicities were evaluated by SRB method.

        Review : Recovery Processes of Organic Acids from Fermentation Broths in the Biomass-Based Industry

        The new movement towards green chemistry and renewable feedstocks makes microbial production of chemicals more competitive. Among the numerous chemicals, organic acids are more attractive targets for process development efforts in the renewable-based biorefinery industry. However, most of the production costs in microbial processes are higher than that in chemical processes, among which over 60% are generated by separation processes. Therefore, the research of separation and purification processes is important for a promising biorefinery industry. This review highlights the progress of recovery processes in the separation and purification of organic acids, including their advantages and disadvantages, current situation, and future prospects in terms of recovery yields and industrial application.

      • Dynamic test and numerical simulation on avoiding the weak-story failure mechanism in structures using LSFDs

        The structural damage or collapse caused by weak-story failure mechanisms poses a great threat to the safety of human life and property under strong earthquakes. Many researchers have attempted to transform this unexpected failure mechanism into the desired overall failure mechanism by installing various energy dissipation devices on unsafe structures. This paper introduced a lattice-shaped friction device (LSFD), which is a friction device with hardening postyielding stiffness, into a steel frame with a weak-story failure mechanism. Then, shaking table tests of a three types of two-story steel frames—a frame with LSFDs, a frame with traditional friction brace dampers (FBDs), and a bare frame—were carried out. The seismic responses of the hardening postyielding stiffness of the LSFD on the weak-story failure mechanism of the frame were emphatically studied. The results showed that there was little difference in the seismic responses between the two damped structures under moderate and weak earthquakes. The distribution of maximum story drift for the structure with LSFDs was more uniform, which effectively suppressed the weak-story failure under strong earthquakes, whereas the structure with FBDs had serious deformation concentrations. The numerical simulation results of the structure with LSFDs in the shaking table test showed that the simplified model results were basically consistent with the experimental results. Hence, this model could be used to analyze the seismic performance of damped structures with LSFDs.

        Highly Efficient Shoot Regeneration from Cotyledonary Nodes of Vegetable Soybean

        풋콩(Glycine max (L.) Merrill) 6개 품종의 자엽절 절편체로부터 thidiazuron(TDZ)과 NAA 농도를 달리한 배지에서 신초의 효율적인 재분화를 조사한 후, 가장 효과가 좋은 생장조절물질 조합으로 배지 종류, 접종방법 및 품종별 신초 재분화율을 조사하였다. 또한 절편체를 배지에 수직 또는 수평으로 치상하는 방법과 B5, 1/2 B5, MS, 1/2 MS, MSB(MS salts + B5 organics) 등의 5가지 기본 배지에 관하여 시험하였다. B5 배지에 1㎎?L<SUP>-1</SUP> TDZ, 0.05㎎?L<SUP>-1</SUP> NAA, 5㎎?L<SUP>-1</SUP> AgNO₃를 첨가한 처리에서 6개 품종의 신초 재분화율이 55.3-88.9%로 높았다. ‘L?ling No. 1’의 경우 수직으로 치상하는 것이 수평으로 치상하는 것보다 신초 재분화율이 37.5% 더 높았다. 따라서 풋콩은 TDZ를 처리한 B5 배지에 자엽절을 수직으로 치상할 때 신초 재분화율이 높았다. To establish a highly efficient system for shoot regeneration in vegetable soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill), explants were obtained from six genotypes and adventitious shoots were regenerated from cotyledonary nodes cultured on medium supplemented with different concentrations of N-phenyl-N′-1, 2, 3-thiadiazol-5-ylurea (thidiazuron TDZ) and 1-naphthylacetic acid (NAA). The most effective combination of plant growth regulators was selected first and then the effects of medium types, inoculation methods and genotypic differences on shoot regeneration were studied. The explants were inserted either vertically or horizontally into the medium and five basal media, including B5, ½ B5, MS, ½ MS, and MSB (MS salts and B5 organics), were tested. The shoot regeneration frequency of the six genotypes ranged from 53.5% to 88.9% and three of them reached 88.9%, 87.5% and 83.3%, respectively, on B5 medium supplemented with 1 ㎎?L<SUP>-1</SUP> TDZ, 0.05 ㎎?L<SUP>-1</SUP> NAA, and 5 ㎎?L<SUP>-1</SUP> AgNO₃. The shoot regeneration frequency of explants cultured on B5 medium was significantly higher than that of the other four basal media. The vertically inserted explants were found to yield a higher shoot regeneration frequency than that of horizontally inserted ones; the maximum difference of regenerating percentages between the two methods was 37.5%. In summary, TDZ was an efficient plant growth regulator for shoot induction. B5 medium and vertically inserted explants promoted shoot regeneration. We believe this highly efficient shoot regeneration system will provide foundation for the further transgenic studies in vegetable soybean.

        Combination of canagliflozin and puerarin alleviates the lipotoxicity to diabetic kidney in mice

        Diabetic kidney disease is one of the most serious complications of diabetes. Although diabetic kidney disease can be effectively controlled through strict blood glucose management and corresponding symptomatic treatment, these therapies cannot reduce its incidence in diabetic patients. The sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and the traditional Chinese herb “Gegen” have been widely used in diabetes-related therapy. However, it remains unclear whether the combined use of these two kinds of medicines contributes to an increased curative effect on diabetic kidney disease. In this study, we examined this issue by evaluating the efficacy of the combination of puerarin, an active ingredient of Gegen, and canagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor for a 12-week intervention using a mouse model of diabetes. The results indicated that the combination of puerarin and canagliflozin was superior to canagliflozin alone in improving the metabolic and renal function parameters of diabetic mice. Our findings suggested that the renoprotective effect of combined puerarin and canagliflozin in diabetic mice was achieved by reducing renal lipid accumulation. This study provides a new strategy for the clinical prevention and treatment of diabetic kidney disease. The puerarin and SGLT2 inhibitor combination therapy at the initial stage of diabetes may effectively delay the occurrence of diabetic kidney injury, and significantly alleviate the burden of renal lipotoxicity

      • Multivariate Analysis of Molecular Indicators for Postoperative Liver Metastasis in Colorectal Cancer Cases

        Aims: To explore the relationship between various molecular makers and liver metastasis of colorectal cancer (CRC). Method: Using immunohistochemistry, protein expression of CEA, nm23, c-met, MMP2, COX-2, VEGF, EGFR, and CD44 was assessed in 80 CRC cases. The Chi-square test and logistic regression were performed to analyze the relationship between these indicators and CRC liver metastasis. Results: There were significant differences in expression of CEA, MMP2, CD44, VEGF and EGFR between the liver metastasis and non metastasis groups (P < 0.05); no significant differences were noted for nm23, c-met, and COX-2 expression. Logistic regression analysis showed that only CEA, VEGF, and EGFR entered into the regression equation, and had significant correlations with CRC liver metastasis (${\alpha}$ inclusion= 0.10, ${\alpha}$ elimination = 0.15, R2 = 0.718). Conclusions: Combination detection of CEA, VEGF, and EGFR may be an effective means to predict CRC liver metastasis. Nm23, c-met, MMP2, COX-2, and CD44, in contrast, are not suitable as prognostic markers.

        New dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins from Panax notoginseng saponins

        Background: Panax notoginseng saponin (PNS) is the extraction from the roots and rhizomes of Panax notoginseng (Burk.) F. H. Chen. PNS is the main bioactive component of Xuesaitong, Xueshuantong, and other Chinese patent medicines, which are all bestselling prescriptions in China to treat cardiocerebrovascular diseases. Notoginsenoside R₁ and ginsenoside Rg₁, Rd, Re, and Rb₁ are the principal effective constituents of PNS, but a systematic research on the rare saponin compositions has not been conducted. Objective: The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic chemical study on PNS and establish the HPLC fingerprint of PNS to provide scientific evidence in quality control. In addition, the cytotoxicity of the new compounds was tested. Methods: Pure saponins from PNS were isolated by means of many chromatographic methods, and their structures were determined by extensive analyses of NMR and HR-ESI-MS studies. The fingerprint was established by HPLC-UV method. The cytotoxicity of the compounds was tested by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5 -diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. Results and Conclusion: Three new triterpenoid saponins (1e3) together with 25 known rare saponins (4 e28) were isolated from PNS, except for the five main compounds (notoginsenoside R₁ and ginsenoside Rg₁, Rd, Re, and Rb₁). In addition, the HPLC fingerprint of PNS was established, and the peaks of the isolated compounds were marked. The study of chemical constituents and fingerprint was useful for the quality control of PNS. The study on antitumor activities showed that new Compound 2 exhibited significant inhibitory activity against the tested cell lines.

      • Quaternion Discrete Tchebichef Moments and Their Applications

        The concept of the quaternion is useful for colour image processing and recognition. This paper introduces quaternion discrete Tchebichef moments (QTM), which use the traditional Tchebichef moments (TM) of each colour channel to describe colour images. A set of invariants that are invariant to translation and scale transformations is introduced for colour object recognition and image classification. A theoretical framework is provided for the recognition of colour face images by combining the proposed quaternion Tchebichef moment functions with the sparse representation classification (SRC) strategy for improving recognition despite partial occlusions. Simulation results on standard colour face databases demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, even when the images include Gaussian or pepper-and-salt noise.
