Plant-specifc SnRK2 (sucrose nonfermenting-1-related protein kinase 2) genes play crucial roles in the coordination of plant growth and development and responses to stress. However, comprehensive studies have not been performed for this gene family in pepper (Capsicum annuum), a very important Solanaceous vegetable worldwide. To fully understand the status of SnRK2s in chili pepper, a total of 9 putative SnRK2 genes (named CaSnRK2.1-2.9) were identifed in pepper in the present study. These genes were located on 7 diferent chromosomes and classifed into three subfamilies based on the phylogenetic tree. Their conserved motif compositions and exon-intron structures were systematically analyzed, and the results strongly supported the classifcation. Furthermore, a total of 81 putative cis-elements were found in the promoter regions, and the cis-elements related to hormone and stress signaling were abundant. Finally, the CaSnRK2 gene expression profles among diferent tissues, especially developing fruit tissue, and under various abiotic stresses were investigated to identify tissuespecifc or stress-responsive candidates. This study was the frst to comprehensively investigate the SnRK2 family in pepper, and the results provide important clues for further functional analyses of fruit development and abiotic stress responses.
Positive Return–Volatility Correlation and Short Sale Constraints: Evidence from the Chinese Market

The market price is a convex function of information when short sales are constrained. Borrowing constraints limit investors to bidding up the price. The two effects imply an asymmetric return–volatility correlation (RVC) when information shifts. We build a model to show that: (i) short selling decreases RVC, while margin trading increases RVC; (ii) RVC increases with disagreement; and (iii) RVC increases with returns. The Chinese stock market is ideal for the empirical test because only certain stocks are eligible for short selling and margin trading in the slow policy adoption process. We obtain evidence to support the theoretical predictions correlation.
Vibration analysis on the rolling element bearing-rotor system of an air blower

Air blowers are widely used in industry. The vibration of the rolling bearing-rotor is a key factor in the blower’s performance because it significantly influences the security and working life of the whole system. In previous research on the vibration characteristics of the air blower, the supporting rolling element bearing was always simplified as a particle on a shaft with radial stiffness and damping coefficient. Such simplification neglects the effects of the bearing structure on the vibration performance of the rotor system. In this paper, a numerical model of the bending stiffness of the tapered roller bearing was established through mechanics and deformation analysis. On the base of the model, a new TMM (transfer matrix method) for bearing-rotor system was established; the new TMM considers the influences of the bearing structure on the vibration of the rotor system. Furthermore, modal analysis on an air blower rotor system was carried out by using the new TMM, and the mode shape, critical speed and unbalance response of the air blower system were obtained. The same blower rotor was also analyzed by FEM to verify the validation of the new TMM, showing that the new method proposed in this paper for vibration characteristics calculation of an air blower is credible.
Effects of rapid thermal annealing on the optical properties of strain-free quantum ring solar cells

<P>Strain-free GaAs/Al<SUB>0.33</SUB>Ga<SUB>0.67</SUB>As quantum rings are fabricated by droplet epitaxy. Both photoresponse and photoluminescence spectra confirm optical transitions in quantum rings, suggesting that droplet epitaxial nanomaterials are applicable to intermediate band solar cells. The effects of post-growth annealing on the quantum ring solar cells are investigated, and the optical properties of the solar cells with and without thermal treatment are characterized by photoluminescence technique. Rapid thermal annealing treatment has resulted in the significant improvement of material quality, which can be served as a standard process for quantum structure solar cells grown by droplet epitaxy.</P>
Root hair‐specific expansins modulate root hair elongation in rice

<P><B>Summary</B></P><P>Root hair growth requires intensive cell‐wall modification. This study demonstrates that root hair‐specific expansin As, a sub‐clade of the cell wall‐loosening expansin proteins, are required for root hair elongation in rice (<I>Oryza sativa</I> L.). We identified a gene encoding <I>EXPA17</I> (<I>OsEXPA17</I>) from a rice mutant with short root hairs. Promoter::reporter transgenic lines exhibited exclusive <I>OsEXPA17</I> expression in root hair cells. The OsEXPA17 mutant protein (OsexpA17) contained a point mutation, causing a change in the amino acid sequence (Gly104→Arg). This amino acid alteration is predicted to disrupt a highly conserved disulfide bond in the mutant. Suppression of <I>OsEXPA17</I> by RNA interference further confirmed requirement for the gene in root hair elongation. Complementation of the <I>OsEXPA17</I> mutant with other root hair EXPAs (OsEXPA30 and Arabidopsis EXPA7) can restore root hair elongation, indicating functional conservation of these root hair EXPAs in monocots and dicots. These results demonstrate that members of the root hair EXPA sub‐clade play a crucial role in root hair cell elongation in Graminaceae.</P>
Identification and Characterization of EDT1 Conferring Drought Tolerance in Rice

Basic Leucine Zipper (bZIP) transcription factors(TFs) play important roles in many processes, especially inabiotic stress response in plants. In this study, we characterizeda new gene EHANCED DROUGHT TOLERANCE 1 (EDT1),member of group E of bZIP transcription factor family inrice. The EDT1 protein contains one bZIP domain, oneputative nuclear localization signal (NLS) and six conservedphosphorylation sites. The expression of EDT1 is suppressedby several abiotic stresses, such as cold, droutht, and salt. Corresponding with expression patterns, several stress-associatedcis-acting elements were found in the EDT1 promoter. Theresults of subcellular localization and transactivation abilityanalyses indicated that EDT1 was localized in the nucleusand functioned as a nuclear protein, with its transactivationactivity primarily located in N-terminal. Transgenic riceoverexpressing EDT1 showed drought tolerance that hasbeen significantly improved. Real-time PCR analysis revealedthat some stress-related genes, such as OsbZIP12, SNAC1,OsLEA3, OsbZIP16, OsbZIP10 and OsABI2 were up-regulatedin EDT1 overexpression lines. These results indicate thatEDT1 plays a positive role in drought tolerance and providesvaluable targets for breeding drought-tolerant rice cultivars.
High Power Gto Thyristors with the New Anode-Shorts Structure

An 1000-A 3000-V gate turn-off thyristor( GTO) with the ringed anode-shorts has been developed. To achieve the low on- state voltage and switching loss, the optimum device design and processing technologies are presented here. It is also confirmed that the device with ringed anode- shorts has a faster decay rates which have strongly effects on the switching loss. As a result, the improved device design gives more reliability than that of symmetrical GTO during the turn-off period.
