        Metastasis associated genomic aberrations in stage II rectal cancer

        Genomic aberrations of rectal carcinoma, especially DNA copy number changes associated with metastasis were largely unclear. We aim to identify the metastasis associated biomarkers in stage II rectal cancer. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded primary tumor tissues of stage II rectal carcinoma were analyzed by array-based comparative genomic hybridization, and genomic aberrations were identified by Genomic Workbench and SAM software. Copy number changes and mRNA expressions were validated by Real-time PCR in an independent rectal cancer samples. The results showed that the most frequent gains in stage II rectal cancer were at 1q21.2-q23.1, 3p21.31, 11q12.2-q23.3, 12q24.11-q24.31, 12q13.11-q14.1 and losses in 18q11.2-q23, 17q21.33-q22, 13q31.1-q31.3, 21q21.1-q21.3, 8p23.3-p23.1 and 4q22.1-q23. Twenty-two amplifications and five homozygous deletions were also identified. We further found that S100A1 (1q21.3-q23.1), MCM7 (7q22.1) and JUND (19p13.11) were amplified and overexpressed in stage II rectal cancer. Interestingly, the genomic aberrations affected 14 signaling pathways including VEGF signaling pathway and fatty acid metabolism. Most importantly, loss of 13q31.1-q34 and gain of 1q44 were associated with distant metastasis. Our results indicated that these metastasis associated genomic changes may be useful to reveal the pathogenesis of rectal cancer metastasis and identify candidate biomarkers.

        A morphological study on autumnal morphs of Aphis glycines (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

        The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is one of the most important pests of soybean. The complex life cycle of A. glycines is characterized as heteroecious and holocyclic, and has seasonal polymorphisms occurring during its life cycle. In the autumn, A. glycines occur as winged and wingless virginoparae in soybeans, as gynoparae and males that migrate from soybeans to Rhamnus spp. and as gynoparae, males and oviparae on Rhamnus spp. In this study, wingless virginoparae, gynoparae, males and oviparae of A. glycines were successfully induced in the laboratory and morphological parameters of these morphs were selected for quantitation. To aid in identification of these A. glycines autumnal morphs, these aphids were imaged by microscope and significant differences in morphological characteristics were found: distal parts of hind leg femurs of gynoparae were grayish black, which were darker than those of winged virginoparae; the 4th instars of gynoparae, males and winged virginoparae differ greatly in dorsal abdomen coloration and covering. Our results provide an important guide for distinguishing adults of gynoparae and winged virginoparae, and for identifying nymphs of gynoparae, males and winged virginoparae.

        Fluorescent Nanoparticles for Observing Primo Vascular System Along Sciatic Nerve

        The primo vascular system was found in the epineurium along the rat sciatic nerve following subcutaneous injection of fluorescent nanoparticles at the Zusanli acupoint (ST-36). Nanoparticles were injected into the primo-vessel near ST-36 and flowed along the sciatic nerve. Fluorescence revealed a structure in the epineurium that was hardly detectable. Images of the isolated sample stained with 4’,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole were captured using confocal microscopy. These images showed the distinctive nuclei distribution and multi-lumen structure of primo-vessels that differentiate them from lymphatic vessels, blood capillaries and nerves. This study demonstrates a new use for nanoparticles in fluorescence reflectance imaging techniques during in vivo imaging of primo-vessels.

        An Efficient Revocable Group Signature Scheme in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

        Although many revocable group signature schemes has been proposed in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), the existing schemes suffer from long computation delay on revocation that they cannot adapt to the dynamic VANETs. Based on Chinese remainder theorem and Schnorr signature algorithm, this paper proposes an efficient revocable group signature scheme in VANETs. In the proposed scheme, it only need to update the corresponding group public key when a member quits the group, and in the meanwhile the key pairs of unchanged group members are not influenced. Furthermore, this scheme can achieve privacy protection by making use of blind certificates. Before joining to the VANETs, users register at local trusted agencies (LTAs) with their ID cards to obtain blind certificates. The blind certificate will be submitted to road-side units (RSUs) to verify the legality of users. Thus, the real identities of users can be protected. In addition, if there is a dispute, users can combine to submit open applications to RSUs against a disputed member. And LTAs can determine the real identity of the disputed member. Moreover, since the key pairs employed by a user are different in different groups, attackers are not able to track the movement of users with the obtained public keys in a group. Furthermore, performance analysis shows that proposed scheme has less computation cost than existing schemes.

        Real-Time Contour-Error Estimation Methods for Three-Dimensional Free-Form Parametric Curves in Contour-Following Tasks

        It is crucial to control the contour error in curved contour-following tasks caused by reasons such as servo delay and external disturbance. Contour-error estimation plays as a precondition for its further control. Existing methods can hardly keep well estimation accuracy for high-speed following of free-form curves with sharp corners, especially for three-dimensional curves. Consequently, this paper presents three high-precision real-time contour-error estimation methods for spatial free-form parametric curved contour following. By generating and updating the backstepping point according to the tangential tracking error, a multiple tangential approximation method is presented first. Then, a spatial circular approximation method is given by means of approximating the actual-position nearby region of the desired contour with a spatial circle. Finally, via modification of the Newton method so as to improve its stability without sacrificing of its fast convergence property, an initial value regeneration-based Newton algorithm is proposed for contour-error estimation. All of the presented methods take both estimation precision and calculation burden into consideration, and possess their own advantages. Using these algorithms, the contour error can be rapidly estimated in vector form with a high accuracy. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and the superiority of the presented algorithms.

        Semi-active control on long-span reticulated steel structures using MR dampers under multi-dimensional earthquake excitations

        This paper focuses on the vibration control of long-span reticulated steel structures under multidimensional earthquake excitation. The control system and strategy are constructed based on Magneto- Rheological (MR) dampers. The LQR and Hrovat controlling algorithm is adopted to determine optimal MR damping force, while the modified Bingham model (MBM) and inverse neural network (INN) is proposed to solve the real-time controlling current. Three typical long-span reticulated structural systems are detailedly analyzed, including the double-layer cylindrical reticulated shell, single-layer spherical reticulated shell, and cable suspended arch-truss structure. Results show that the proposed control strategy can reduce the displacement and acceleration effectively for three typical structural systems. The displacement control effect under the earthquake excitation with different PGA is similar, while for the cable suspended arch-truss, the acceleration control effect increase distinctly with the earthquake excitation intensity. Moreover, for the cable suspended arch-truss, the strand stress variation can also be effectively reduced by the MR dampers, which is very important for this kind of structure to ensure that the cable would not be destroyed or relaxed.

        Cordycepin inhibits chondrocyte hypertrophy of mesenchymal stem cells through PI3K/Bapx1 and Notch signaling pathway

        Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are widely used in cartilage tissue engineering to repair articular cartilage defects. However, hypertrophy of chondrocytes derived from MSCs might hinder the stabilization of hyaline cartilage. Thus, it is very important to find a suitable way to maintain the chondrogenic phenotype of chondrocytes. It has been reported that cordycepin has anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor functions. However, the role of cordycepin in chondrocyte hypertrophy remains unclear. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of cordycepin on chondrogenesis and chondrocyte hypertrophy in MSCs and ATDC5 cells. Cordycepin upregulated chondrogenic markers including Sox9 and collagen type II while down-regulated hypertrophic markers including Runx2 and collagen type X. Further exploration showed that cordycepin promoted chondrogenesis through inhibiting Nrf2 while activating BMP signaling. Besides, cordycepin suppressed chondrocyte hypertrophy through PI3K/Bapx1 pathway and Notch signaling. Our results indicated cordycepin had the potential to maintain chondrocyte phenotype and reconstruct engineered cartilage. [BMB Reports 2016; 49(10): 548-553]

        The security issues related to IPv6 protocol have been focused on by many researchers and engineers. Especially, extension headers of IPv6 protocol provide various functionalities such as IP security, mobile IP, and in principle, it is said to give much more effective network services than the previous protocol, IPv4. In this paper, the cases are surveyed in which fragment header, that is one of many extension headers in IPv6 protocol, is abusedand made to be the sources of threats. Prevention mechanisms are also surveyed to countermeasure the threats.

        Longitudinal anti-cracking analysis for post-tensioned voided slab bridges

        Post-tensioned concrete voided slab girders are widely used in highway bridge constructions. To obtain greater section hollow rate and reduce the self-weight, the plate thickness of slab girders are designed to be small with the adoption of flat anchorage system. Since large prestress is applied to the anchor end section, it was found that longitudinal shear cracks are easy to occur along the voided slab girder. The reason is the existence of great shearing effect at the junction area between web and bottom (top) plate in the anchor end section. This paper focuses on the longitudinal anti-cracking problem at the anchor end of post-tensioned concrete voided slab girders. Two possible models for longitudinal anticracking analysis are proposed. Differential element analysis method is adopted to derive the solving formula of the critical cracking state, and then the practical analysis method for longitudinal anti-cracking is established. The influence of some factors on the longitudinal anti-cracking ability is studied. Results show that the section dimensions (thickness of bottom, web and top plate) and prestress eccentricity on web plate are the main factors that influence the anti-cracking ability. Moreover, the proposed method is applied into three engineering examples to make longitudinal anti-cracking verification for the girders. According to the verification results, the design improvements for these girders are determined.
