        A simplified method for estimating the fundamental period of masonry infilled reinforced concrete frames

        The fundamental period is an important parameter for seismic design and seismic risk assessment of building structures. In this paper, a simplified theoretical method to predict the fundamental period of masonry infilled reinforced concrete (RC) frame is developed based on the basic theory of engineering mechanics. The different configurations of the RC frame as well as masonry walls were taken into account in the developed method. The fundamental period of the infilled structure is calculated according to the integration of the lateral stiffness of the RC frame and masonry walls along the height. A correction coefficient is considered to control the error for the period estimation, and it is determined according to the multiple linear regression analysis. The corrected formula is verified by shaking table tests on two masonry infilled RC frame models, and the errors between the estimated and test period are 2.3% and 23.2%. Finally, a probability-based method is proposed for the corrected formula, and it allows the structural engineers to select an appropriate fundamental period with a certain safety redundancy. The proposed method can be quickly and flexibly used for prediction, and it can be hand-calculated and easily understood. Thus it would be a good choice in determining the fundamental period of RC frames infilled with masonry wall structures in engineering practice instead of the existing methods.

        A Multi-level Perception Security Model Using Virtualization

        Virtualization technology has been widely applied in the area of computer security research that provides a new method for system protection. It has been a hotspot in system security research at present. Virtualization technology brings new risk as well as progress to computer operating system (OS). A multi-level perception security model using virtualization is proposed to deal with the problems of over-simplification of risk models, unreliable assumption of secure virtual machine monitor (VMM) and insufficient integration with virtualization technology in security design. Adopting the enhanced isolation mechanism of address space, the security perception units can be protected from risk environment. Based on parallel perceiving by the secure domain possessing with the same privilege level as VMM, a mechanism is established to ensure the security of VMM. In addition, a special pathway is set up to strengthen the ability of information interaction in the light of making reverse use of the method of covert channel. The evaluation results show that the proposed model is able to obtain the valuable risk information of system while ensuring the integrity of security perception units, and it can effectively identify the abnormal state of target system without significantly increasing the extra overhead.

        Transfusion auxiliary device by patient manual control dressing is proposed. It is realized by one-way rotation ratchet mechanism, which is consistent of slider-crank mechanism and double pawl ratchet mechanism. Dressing change is automatically realized by patient manual control rope. This reduces the labor intensity of the medical staff, shortens the waiting time of the patients. This device has the advantage of low cost, large market space.

        Proportional-Derivative (PD) Controller for Heuristic Rule-based Motorway Coordinated Ramp Meters

        This study proposes a new control method for rule-based motorway coordinated ramp metering. Coordinated ramp metering makes use of the network-wide measurements and allows multiple meters to participate in the control action to prevent or delay the onset of congestion on motorways. An essential component is a controller to dynamically adjust the level of contribution to coordination of each participating meter. The new control method builds on the concept of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller. A comprehensive sensitivity analysis is carried out to formulate the controller structure and coefficients. The final structure takes the form of PD controller with P-term as the main controller and D-term as supplementary to accelerate response speed and to improve the control stability. The PD controller is embedded in a rule-based coordinated ramp metering strategy for performance evaluation. A simulation study demonstrates the effectiveness of the PD controller. The coordinated control improves the mainstream traffic condition by reducing 60% and 8.4% of average traffic delay time over the base case assuming no metering and the local metering control scenario, respectively. The overall traffic travel time also decreased by the coordinated control by 25.1% and 2.0% over the base case and local metering, respectively. The enhanced mainstream traffic flow is achieved by balanced utilization of local meters and on-ramp spaces.

      • hARIP2 is a Putative Growth-promoting Factor Involved in Human Colon Tumorigenesis

        Activin is a multifunctional growth and differentiation factor of the growth factor-beta (TGF-${\beta}$) superfamily, which inhibits the proliferation of colon cancer cells. It induces phosphorylation of intracellular signaling molecules (Smads) by interacting with its type I and type II receptors. Previous studies showed that human activin receptor-interacting protein 2 (hARIP2) can reduce activin signaling by interacting with activin type II receptors; however, the activity of hARIP2 in colon cancer has yet to be detailed. In vitro, overexpression of hARIP2 reduced activin-induced transcriptional activity and enhanced cell proliferation and colony formation in human colon cancer HCT8 cells and SW620 cells. Also, hARIP2 promoted colon cancer cell apoptosis, suggesting that a vital role in the initial stage of colon carcinogenesis. In vivo, immunohistochemistry revealed that hARIP2 was expressed more frequently and much more intensely in malignant colon tissues than in controls. These results indicate that hARIP2 is involved in human colon tumorigenesis and could be a predictive maker for colon carcinoma aggressiveness.

        The USP21/YY1/SNHG16 axis contributes to tumor proliferation, migration, and invasion of non-small-cell lung cancer

        Deubiquitinases (DUBs) and noncoding RNAs have been the subjects of recent extensive studies regarding their roles in lung cancer, but the mechanisms involved are largely unknown. In our study, we used The Cancer Genome Atlas data set and bioinformatics analyses and identified USP21, a DUB, as a potential contributor to oncogenesis in nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We further demonstrated that USP21 was highly expressed in NSCLCs. We then conducted a series of in vitro and in vivo assays to explore the effect of USP21 on NSCLC progression and the underlying mechanism involved. USP21 promoted NSCLC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and in vivo tumor growth by stabilizing a well-known oncogene, Yin Yang-1 (YY1), via mediating its deubiquitination. Furthermore, YY1 transcriptionally regulates the expression of SNHG16. Moreover, StarBase bioinformatics analyses predicted that miR4500 targets SNHG16 and USP21. A series of in vitro experiments indicated that SNHG16 increased the expression of USP21 through miR-4500. In summary, the USP21/YY1/SNHG16 axis plays a role in promoting the progression of NSCLC. Therefore, the USP21/YY1/SNHG16/miR-4500 axis may be a potential therapeutic target in NSCLC treatment.

        Association Between Chilli Food Habits with Iron Status and Insulin Resistance in a Chinese Population

        Some studies have indicated that the consumption of chilli-containing foods can influence iron absorption and affect serum insulin and glucose concentrations, which may help to alleviate diabetes or prediabetes. The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between chilli food habits with iron status and insulin resistance in the Chinese population. Fasting blood samples, anthropometric data, and chilli food habit data collected from 8433 adults (aged 18 to 99), in 2009, as part of the China Health and Nutrition Survey, a large-scale longitudinal, household-based survey in China. Chilli food habits were assessed using chilli food eating frequencies (no eating, sometimes eating, often eating, and usually eating) and chilli food types (a little bit hot, moderately hot, and very hot). Fasting serum ferritin, insulin, and fasting plasma glucose were also measured. The homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was used to estimate insulin resistance. Compared with the chilli-eating group, the no eating group had higher HOMA-IR levels for both men and women (P < .05). There were significant differences in HOMA-IR (P < .05) for both men and women and in ferritin (P < .001) for women according to different chilli food types. However, there was no significant difference in the ferritin level and HOMAIR components for different chilli food eating frequencies in both sex groups. Chilli food habits, especially the different hotness levels of chilli food, were associated with iron status and insulin resistance in the Chinese population. Additional studies are needed to elucidate mechanisms of action and to establish causal inference.

      • An Optimization of CORDIC Algorithm and FPGA Implementation

        ASIC and FPGA ASIC and FPGA are considered to be the ideal platform for special fast calculations because of the hardware structure, and how to achieve computational algorithm by is the hotpot of research. The CORDIC (Coordinate Rotational Digital Computer) can break the basis functions down to operations of shift and addition or subtraction, which can be used to lay the foundation for the realization of complex logic. But the functions selected by traditional CODIC for angle encoding are too complex, which will lead to some problems, such as too much of area consumption and large delay. In this paper, an optimization of CORDIC algorithm are proposed, which reduce the consumption of Adders and comparators, decrease the complexity and delay of the algorithm implement in hardware. The proposed algorithms are modeled in Verilog Hardware Description Language and implemented with FPGA. The simulation results show that the functions of sine and cosine are realized successfully, and the proposed algorithm not only improves the computation speed but also reduces the system hardware resources.

        Sliding Mode Robust Control of Hydraulic Drive Unit of Hydraulic Quadruped Robot

        This paper focuses on the position control of the quadruped robot hydraulic drive unit (HDU). The proposed control strategy has the advantages of excellent output tracking performance, strong robustness, no chattering and low computational complexity. HDU has the characteristics of nonlinearity and parameter uncertainty, coupled with unpredictable external interference, which makes it difficult to achieve precise position control. In this paper, we first establish the mathematical model of the HDU based on the actual parameters and obtain the state space of the system. Through the pole placement, the simplified system can easily achieve the expected control goal. Then, the state equation of the error system is constructed, and the nonlinearity, parameter uncertainty and external interference of the HDU are summarized as the matched and unmatched uncertainties of the system. The integral sliding mode control (ISMC) is used to derive the control law, and the response characteristics of the system when pole placement and state feedback H∞ control are used for the nominal control are compared. It can be concluded that the system with state feedback H∞ control for nominal control has stronger robustness and can resist the unmatched uncertainties. Finally, the control law of the simplified system is used as feedforward and combined with the ISMC of the error system, the output tracking control framework of the HDU is proposed. Simulations and experiments show that the proposed control method has excellent tracking performance and strong robustness.
