Despite the potential importance of the human regulator of calcineurin 1 (RCAN-1) gene in the modulation of cell survival under stress, little is known about its role in death-inducing signal pathways. In this study, we addressed the effects of RCAN1.4 knockdown on cellular susceptibility to apoptosis and the activation of death pathway proteins. Transfection of siRNAs against RCAN1.4 resulted in enhanced Fas- and etoposide-induced apoptosis, which was associated with increased expression and translocation of Bax to mitochondria. Our results suggest that enhanced expression and activation of p53 was responsible for the upregulation of Bax and the increased sensitivity to apoptosis, which could be reversed by p53 knockdown. To explain the observed upregulation of p53, we propose a downregulation of the ubiquitin ligase HDM2, probably translationally. These findings show the importance of appropriate RCAN1.4 expression in the modulation of cell survival and reveal a link between RCAN1.4 and p53.

Background: No study to date has confirmed the possibility of using the sniffing position for performing straight intubation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the head position for intubation with the armoured tube during direct laryngoscopy. Methods: One hundred pediatric patients (males: 61, females: 39, aged 1-15 years) were included in this study. Initially, we tried to intubate the armored endotracheal tube in a straight fashion in every subject by placing the patient in the sniffing position and we recorded whether the procedure was successful. We measured the distance (D: occiput to flat table) and the angle (α: between the occiput-shoulder line and flat table line) at the moment of successful intubation and we also calculated the body mass index (BMI). Results: The armored tube could be intubated in a straight fashion in all patients (82/82, 100%) for a head elevation at the height of 8.19 ± 2.03 cm (4.4-14.2 cm) from the flat table, but we were only successful in 18/100 (18%) patients placed in the sniffing position (P < 0.0001). There were statistically significant differences between head elevation and the sniffing position for the D and the α (P < 0.0001). Conclusions: Elevating the head approximately 8 cm from operating table and simultaneous mandibular advancement via the laryngoscope during direct laryngoscopy makes it possible to perform straight intubation with the armored tube during direct laryngoscopy in pediatric patients with normal airway anatomy. We recommend that our head elevation technique, which goes beyond the sniffing position, might be a good practice for performing pediatric anesthesia with the armoured tube. The reaction rates of 4-X-2,6-dinitrochlorobenzenes (X = NO2, CN, CF3) with Y-substituted benzylamines (Y = p-OCH3,p-CH3, H, p-Cl) in MeOH-MeCN mixtures were measured by conductometry at 25 oC. It was observed that the rate constant increased in the order of X = NO2 > CN > CF3 and in the order of Y = p-OCH3 > p-CH3 > H > p-Cl. When the solvent composition was varied, the rate constant increased in the order of 100% MeOH < 50% (v/v) MeOH-MeCN <100% MeCN. These results may be ascribed to the formation of hydrogen bonds between the alcoholic hydrogen and nitrogen of benzylamines in groud state (GS). We conclude that the reaction takes place via SNAr base on the transition state parameters ρX, ρY, βnuc, and solvent effects.

Vulvar carcinoma is a rare disease that accounts for 5% of gynecologic cancers. Sarcomas of the vulva are extremely rare, and account for only 1% to 3% of all vulvar malignancies. We report of a case of a 26 years woman with a vulva mass. Excision was done and histopathologic result showed rhabdomyosarcoma.
Sex-Gender Differences in Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Because of the sex-gender differences that are shown in a diversity of physiological and psychological factors, it can be speculated that the clinical presentation of symptoms as well as treatment strategies in women and men with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may differ. Studies have revealed that IBS is more common in women than men. As for the IBS subtype, IBS with constipation is significantly more prevalent among women than men. Sex hormones and gender differences may play important roles in the pathophysiology of IBS. However, its pathophysiologic mechanisms still remain largely unknown, and therapeutic implications are limited. Moreover, women IBS patients have been reported to feel more fatigue, depression, anxiety, and lower quality of life than men IBS patients. Furthermore, there has been evidence of differences in the appropriate treatment efficacy to IBS in men and women, although relatively few men are enrolled in most relevant clinical trials. A more sex-gender-oriented approach in the medical care setting could improve understanding of heterogeneous patients suffering from IBS. An individualized and multicomponent approach including sex and gender issues might help improve the treatment of IBS. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2018;24:544-558)

<P>A closed-form expression for the real part of background noise is derived for the power-line channel modeled by Nakagami probability density function. Simulation with various parameters shows the derived expression's validity. The closed-form expression can be of benefit to communication system designers in that it facilitates the design of optimum receiver and its performance evaluation.</P>

The influence of substrate temperature and orientation on the characteristics of Pr07Ca03MnO (PCMO) thin films was evaluated. PCMO thin films were deposited on (111)- and (100)-oriented P3t bottom electrodes by using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique at substrate temperatures ranging from 400℃ to 700℃. The substrate temperature and orientation critically affected the microstructure and the preferred orientation of the deposited films. PCMO films exhibited a strong preferred orientation of (200)/(112) on the Pt (100) substrate, consistent with having rectangular- shaped grains. On the contrary, the PCMO film deposited at 600℃ on Pt (111) had a preferred orientation of (022)/(202) and grains with triangular cross-sections. With increasing the deposition temperature to 700℃, the intensity of the (200)/(112) peak increased because atoms on the PCMO surface diffused to a higher-density plane to minimize the surface energy. The PCMO (200) plane was better for oxygen diffusivity and is believed to have better switching performance. Accordingly, the Pt (100) substrate was considered suitable for PCMO films used in resistance random access memory devices.
