        Advances in sarcopenia: mechanisms, therapeutic targets, and intervention strategies

        Sarcopenia is a multifactorial condition characterized by loss of muscle mass. It poses signifi cant health risks in older adultsworldwide. Both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches are reported to address this disease. Certain dietarypatterns, such as adequate energy intake and essential amino acids, have shown positive outcomes in preserving musclefunction. Various medications, including myostatin inhibitors, growth hormones, and activin type II receptor inhibitors, havebeen evaluated for their eff ectiveness in managing sarcopenia. However, it is important to consider the variable effi cacy andpotential side eff ects associated with these treatments. There are currently no drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administrationfor sarcopenia. The ongoing research aims to develop more eff ective strategies in the future. Our review of researchon disease mechanisms and drug development will be a valuable contribution to future research endeavors.

        무심쌍태아 1례

        Acardiac twinning affects 1 in 100 monozygotic twin pregnancies and 1 in 35,000 pregnancies overall. This condition is characterized by the absence or rudimentary development of fetal heart, and associated with various anomaly. The presence of an acardiac twin requires the normal (or pump) twin to provide circulation for itself, as well as the acardiac sibling. The acardiac malformations are uniformly fatal in the affected twin, and mortality in the co-twin is as high as 55%. The principal perinatal problems associated with acardiac twinning are pump-twin congestive heart failure, maternal hydramnios, and preterm delivery. We recently experienced a case of acardius anceps associated with a normal male infant, so present with a brief review of the literature.

        재생간 세포분획에서 Malondialdehyde 치

        Backgroud/Aims: Oxygen free radicals can be defined as oxygen molecules or molecular fragments that have an unpaired electron. They are formed in all living organisms during physiological and pathophysiological metabolism, and cause cell and tissue damages due to their high chemical reactivity. They can react with macromolecules including lipid, protein and DNA. Peroxidation of lipids exposed to oxygen free radicals is responsible for the damages of cells and tissues in vivo, which may cause cancer, inflammatory disease and liver disease. During the regeneration of the liver, there might be some alterations for metabolism of oxygen free radicals, which causes damage to regenerating liver. To know the degree of damage by oxygen free radicals in cell organelles of regenerating liver, hepatectomy was performed to the Sprgue-Dawley rats. Methods: From the regenerating liver obtained at day 3 after hepatectomy homogenate, mitochondria, microsome, cytosol, nuclei and plasma membrane were obtained as samples by sucrose linear density gradient centrifuger. Then, their malondialdehyde levels were measured by thiobarbituric acid assay. Results: The level of malondialdehyde level were increased in the homogenate, mitochondria, microsome and cytosol of the regenerating liver than in those of the original liver. Conclusions: These results suggest that mitochondria and microsome are susceptible to the oxygen free radicals in the regenerating liver. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2002;39:284-288)

        흰쥐 재생간에서 활성 산소 대사

        Background/Aims: To know the metabolism of oxygen free radicals in the regenerating liver, the 70% (median and left lateral lobes) partial hepatectomy was performed in the Sprague-Dawley rats. Methods: The original livers were obtained immediately after the partial hepatectomy, while the regenerating livers were obtained at 3 days after the partial hepatectomy. The levels of xanthine oxidase, superoxide anion, antioxidant enzymes, hydrogen peroxide, and malondialdehyde were measured. RT-PCR for superoxide dismutase was also performed. Results: Compared to the original livers, the regenerating liver showed higher levels of xanthine oxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase superoxide production, and malondialdehyde and lower level of hydrogen peroxide. RT- PCR did not show any significant change. Conclusions: The results suggest that malondialdehyde level is increased by xanthine oxidase via the increased production of superoxide anion. Superoxide dismutase activity is induced by the increase of superoxide anion. The increase of catalase and glutathione peroxidase levels causes the depletion of hydrogen peroxide level in the regenerating liver. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2002; 40: 255-262)

        외상성 손상으로 인한 응급수술환자에서 APACHE II score의 임상적 의의

        Emergency operations for trauma victims have had the high incidence because the traffic accidents have been increased gradually on developing atomobile vehicles. However, we do not have the standard method in evaluating the patients health status and determining the prognosis of treatment. The aim of this article is to evaluate the prognostic value of the APACHE II scoring system in the patients underwent emergency operations for surgical trauma$quot;$quot;$quot;$quot;. We reviewed clinical charts of 209 patients who were underwent emergency operations for surgical trauma from January 1990 to December 1992 in Chosun University Hospital. 1) The age of the patients ranged from 4 to 89 years and peak age group was 25-34(66 case: 32%). 2) Single organ injuries were 132 cases and two or more than two organ injuries were 77 cases. The most common injured site was small bowel and the next sites were liver and spleen in order. 3) APACHE II score distribution was 0-29. The most patients were distributed from 0 to 5 score and mean score was 5.69+5.37. 4) The patients with higher APACHE II score had higher mortality rate than lower scored patients, namely, the patients over 21 score had 90% mortality rate but those under 5 score showed no mortality(P$lt;0.001). 5) APACHE II scores at postoperative 1st week were significantly lower than the preop- erative APACHE II scores in the survived patients(5.69$gt;5.11 vs 3.10+5.13) 6) The degree and site of the injury were closed relation to the prognosis. Multiple organ or duodenal and / or pancreatic injury showed the higher mortality rate than single organ or small bowel injury respectively(P$lt;0.05). Regardless of degree and site of injury, the trauma patients with high APACHE II score had higher mortality rate than lower scored patients. In conclusion, authors proved the usefulness of APACHE II scoring system in measuring the severity and predicting the prognosis of the injured patients.

        한국무용 스텝 운동이 척추 후만증 청소년의 보행 자세안정화와 골반 움직임에 미치는 영향

        본 연구는 척추 후만증 청소년을 대상으로 한국무용 스텝 운동 프로그램 전과 후에 보행 자세안정화와 골반움직임에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위하여 수행된 연구이다. 본 연구는 K지역 A소재 A중학교 2학년 학생 48명을 대상으로 비 운동 대조그룹(NEG; Non-Exercise group/ n=16), 주 3회 이하 한국무용 스텝 운동그룹(DEG: Deficient Exercise group/ n=16), 주 3회 이상 한국무용 스텝 운동그룹(OEG: Over Exercise group(n=16)으로 선정하여 12주간 한국무용 스텝 운동을 진행하였다. 본 연구 수행을 통해 얻어진 자료는 SPSS 24.0 통계프로그램을 이용하여 반복측정이원변량분석을 실시하였다. 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국무용 스텝 운동에 따른 척추 후만증 청소년의 보행 자세안정화을 분석한 결과 보장(Left, Right), 활보장(Left, Right), 신체움직임에서 OEG가 DEG와 NEG에 비해 통계적으로 유의하게 향상되었다. 둘째, 한국무용 스텝 운동에 따른 척추 후만증 청소년의 골반움직임을 분석한 결과 신전과 굴곡, 내전, 외전, 회전에서 OEG와 DEG가 NEG에 비해 통계적으로 유의하게 향상되었다. This study was to investigate the korea traditional dance movement step exercise on gait performance stabilization and pelvis movement in kyphosis adolescents. The participants were divided into three groups: non exercise group (NEG/ n=16) and deficient exercise group (DEG/ n=16) and over exercise group (OEG/ n=16). The korea traditional dance movement step exercise program for 12 weeks. The results of this study were as follows: First, As for the gait performance stabilization, there were significantly increased in step length left and right, Stride length left and right, body motional quotients in OEG compared with DEG and NEG after 12 weeks. Second, As for the pelvis movement, there were significantly increased in extension and flexion, inversion and eversion in OEG compared with DEG and NEG after 12 weeks. As conclusions, this study confirmed that the korea traditional dance movement step exercise could improve the gait performance stabilization and pelvis movement in kyphosis adolescents.
