Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quantitative association between the degree of reduction and the position of the blade of the proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) in intertrochanteric hip fractures. Methods: From March 2009 to April 2015, 530 patients treated with PFNA for intertrochanteric hip fractures were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into a valgus reduced group (group 1) and a non-valgus reduced group (group 2), and the “valgus reduced” was defined as valgus reduction over 5°. We compared the calcar referenced tip-apex distance (calTAD) and the area between the blade of PFNA and the medial cortex of the femoral neck between the two groups. Results: The calTAD was measured as 22.5 ± 4.1 mm in group 1 and 24.8 ± 3.8 mm in group 2 (p < 0.05). The area between the blade and the medial femoral neck was measured as 135.5 ± 49.8 mm2 in group 1 and 145.1 ± 54.8 mm2 in group 2 (p = 0.074). The area corrected for the length difference in the femoral neck was 0.55 ± 0.16 in group 1 and 0.79 ± 0.19 in group 2 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Valgus reduction resulted in less calTAD and inferior position of the blade at the femoral neck in the treatment of intertrochanteric hip fractures with PFNA.

<P>Under autotrophic conditions, highly productive biodiesel production was achieved using a semi-continuous culture system in Neochloris oleoabundans. In particular, the flue gas generated by combustion of liquefied natural gas and natural solar radiation were used for cost-effective microalgal culture system. In semi-continuous culture, the greater part (similar to 80 %) of the culture volume containing vegetative cells grown under nitrogen-replete conditions in a first photobioreactor (PBR) was directly transferred to a second PBR and cultured sequentially under nitrogen-deplete conditions for accelerating oil accumulation. As a result, in semi-continuous culture, the productivities of biomass and biodiesel in the cells were increased by 58 % (growth phase) and 51 % (induction phase) compared to the cells in batch culture, respectively. The semi-continuous culture system using two stage photobioreactors is a very efficient strategy to further improve biodiesel production from microalgae under photoautotrophic conditions.</P>

Percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy (PTNB) is one of the essential diagnostic procedures for pulmonary lesions. Its role is increasing in the era of CT screening for lung cancer and precision medicine. The Korean Society of Thoracic Radiology developed the first evidence-based clinical guideline for PTNB in Korea by adapting pre-existing guidelines. The guideline provides 39 recommendations for the following four main domains of 12 key questions: the indications for PTNB, pre-procedural evaluation, procedural technique of PTNB and its accuracy, and management of post-biopsy complications. We hope that these recommendations can improve the diagnostic accuracy and safety of PTNB in clinical practice and promote standardization of the procedure nationwide.

Nanotribological characteristics of hydrophobic surfaces were studied experimentally using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Two kinds of thiolic self-assembled mono layers (SAM) having different spacer chains and their mixture were deposited onto gold-coated mica. where the deposited SAM resulted in the hydrophobic nature. Results showed that the mixed thiolic SAMs resulted in low adhesion and friction in nano-scale contact. It was argued that the water wetting characteristics played a central role on nano-scale adhesion and friction. Also the effect of mixing the thiolic SAMs were discussed on the basis of real area on contact and the stiffness of the SAM layers.

<P>The present work is a further investigation into the effects of the carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and niobium (Nb) contents on then fracture properties of the Type 347 stainless steels at 316oC. 9 heats of systematically designed alloys were examined. Through SEM-EDS, TEM and XRD analyses, two kinds of precipitates, Nb(C,N), CrNbN were identified in the Type 347 steels with a high ratio of wt% N to wt% C, on the other hand only Nb(C,N)s were found in the Type 347 steels with a low ratio of wt% N to wt% C. The tearing moduli were decreased in the range of 52~60% as the carbon content increased from 0.03wt% to 0.05wt%. The tearing moduli were lowered by 52~59% in the alloys with a high nitrogen. It was deduced from the microstructure analysis results that the coarse Nb-rich precipitates control the fracture resistance of the Type 347 as they act as the potential sites for the nucleation of micro-voids.</P>

Genetic variation in the Asian shore crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus was determined from partial mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences of the cytochrome b (Cytb) gene. Samples included 143 crabs from six localities along three coastlines in South Korea. A nucleotide sequence analysis revealed 38 variable sites in a 470-bp sequence, which defined 37 haplotypes. The haplotypes were not associated geographically and had a shallow genealogy. Pairwise FST tests and a two-dimensional scaling analysis revealed no significant genetic differentiation among most of the populations. The low pairwise comparison values, but significant genetic differentiation of a northeastern population from all other populations, might have been influenced by a restriction in gene flow caused by hydrographic conditions such as ocean boundaries. The high haplotype diversity, low nucleotide diversity, and time since H. sanguineus expansion in Korean coastal waters indicate rapid population growth and a recent, sudden expansion in the Late Pleistocene.

The radial artery is generally the preferred access route in coronary angiography and coronary intervention. However, small size, spasm, and anatomical variations concerning the radial artery are major limitations of transradial coronary intervention (TRI). We describe a successful case involving a patient with coronary artery disease who underwent TRI via a well-developed radial recurrent artery branch from the radioulnar alpha loop using a sheathless guiding catheter.
