      • 십이지장 궤양 환자와 만성 위염 환자의 염증 분포의 차이 및 H. pylori 집락도와 염증도의 상관관계

        An inflammatory difference between the gastric antrum, body and fundus was studied in 39 H.pylroi positive duodenal ulcer and 29 H. pylori chronic gastritis patients. Also we studied correlation of H. pylori colony count and inflammatory severity. Patients with newly diagnosed duodenal ulcer and chronic gastritis were endoscoped and two biopsy secimens each taken from the antrum, body and fundus. Although intestinal metaplasia in antrum and inflammatory activity in fundus were more severe in chronic gastritis patients. another inflammatory difference was equally likely to be found between two groups. There was no definite histological inflammatory difference between duodenal ulcer and chronic gastritis patients. A positive correlation was found between the number of H. pylori and the severity of inflammation.

      • 상황버섯(Phellinus linteus)으로부터 Ergosterol의 분리

        상황버섯을 80% MeOH 용액으로 추출하고, 추출물을 EtOAc, n-BuOH 및 물로 분배, 추출하였다. 이 중 EtOAc 분획을 silica gel 및 octadecylsilica gel(ODS) column chromatography로 정제하여 1종의 sterol 화합물을 분리하였다. 화합물의 화학구조는 NMR, MS 및 IR 등의 스펙트럼 데이터를 해석하여, ergosta-7,22E-diene-3β,5α,6β-triol(cerevisterol, 1)로 동정하였다. 이 화합물은 상황버섯에서 처음 분리 보고 되었다. Phellinus linteus was extracted with 80% aqueous MeOH, and the concentrated extract was partitioned with EtOAc, n-BuOH and H_(2)O. The repeated silica gel and ODS column chromatographies of the EtOAc fraction led to the isolation of one sterol. From the result of spectral data including NMR, MS and IR, the chemical structure of the sterol was determined as ergosta-7,22E-diene-3β,5α,6β-triol (cerevisterol, 1). Compound 1 was isolated from the Phellinus linteus for the first time in this study.

      • 쓰가루 單一品種 果園을 위한 꽃사과 受粉樹 利用에 관한 硏究

        Crabapples potentially useful as pollenizers in single-cultivar 'Tsugaru' orchard was evaluated for their flowering times and pollen germination(%). Their efficiency in the setting of fruits following controlled pollinations on 'Tsugaru' at private orchard in Sang ju was also examined. The obtained results are as follows, (1) Flowering times of Malus spp. 'Almey' and Malus spp. `Pioneer X' were from April 30 to May 1 and had the same flowering time of 'Tsugaru'. (2) Pollen germination(%) of crabapples using as pollenizers of 'Tsugaru' was over 90% of Malus spp. 'Almey' and Malus spp. 'Pioneer X' respectively. (3) Percentages of fruit setting in 'Tsugaru' crossed with Malus spp. 'Almey' and with 'Pioneer X' showed 99.3% respectively. (4) There was no statistically significant difference in the fruit skin color, fruit diameter (cm), fruit. height (cm), fruitt index, fruit weight(g), soluble solid(˚BX), acidity(pH), fruit hardness (kg/㎠), and seed numbers of 'Tsugaru' crossed with 'Pioneer X' and 'Almey'. (5) On the bases of flowering times, pollen germination, efficient fruit set, promising of fruit skin solour, and no statistically significant difference in fruit quality, Malus spp. 'Almey' and 'Pioneer X' are promising as pollenizers for single-cultivar 'Tsugaru' orchard.

      • 揷木用土 및 Peat plug利用이 만생종 왜철쭉의 揷木에 미치는 영향에 관한 硏究

        This study was carried out to propagate Rhododendron Satsuki hybrid `Bemi-Kirishima' through soft-wood cuttings in the closed mist room in connection to different concentrations of IBA, cutting media, Peat plug. The results were as follows: For the time of cutting, there were noticeable differences in the cutting on June 21 and July 8. Out of cutting media tested, the media prepared by mixing 50% vermiculite and 50 perlite(v/v ) on the treatment of IBA 1000ppm gave 100% rooting and the longest root length. Rooting of plants in the Peat plug was 93.5% and they uniform root length. In addition, Peat plug provided more space for cutting than cutting basket. It was possible that we got good cuttings and therby mass propagation through Peat plug.

      • 미국 및 캐나다 地域에서 栽培, 販賣되고 있는 무궁화 品種에 關한 硏究

        This sutdy was carried out to examine the present distribution and status of Hibiscus cultivars by analyzing the US and Canadian market. The obtained results are summerized as follow : 1. At present, a total of 28 cultivars of Hibiscus are on the market. Among these, twenty four are diploids and four are triploids. The hottest cultivars in the market is a triploid `Diana' sold by 21 different companies. It is followed by 'Ardens' and 'Jeanne d'Arc', following `Red Heart', `Blue Bird', 'Woodbridg e', and 'Helene'. 2. As a conservation or display purpose, several cultivars are ketp in three different arboretums in the US. These include 5 cultivars, `Blue Bird', `Celestial Blue', `Collie Mullens', 'Lucy', and `Ruber Plena', in Arnold Arboretum, and one each, 'Variegatus', at the USDA national arboretum and, `Banner' at Morton arboretum in Chicago. 3. The avarage price for triploid cultivars is $6.00 for each seedling. The recently developed cultivars like 'Helene' and 'Minerva' cost $16.00 per seedling possibly due to their plant patent right. Other cultivars produced by cuttings cost $2.00 to $ 3.00 per seedling. 4. In Canada, there are nine cultivars on the market; being diploids and one triploid, `Diana'. 5. As for the distribution of different cultivars by climatic zone, twelve cultivars are being grown in temperate area like Ohio and Iowa. However, many other cultivars are being cultivated in wamer Southern state like Galifornia. Five cultivars are reported to grow in the relatively cool area like Wisconsin and Minnesota. Even in cold area like Canada, 5 cultivars such as `Anemonaeflorus'(2n), `Ardens'(2n), 'Jeanne d'Arc'(2n), and `Luky'(2n), and 'Paeoniflorus'(2n) at Ontario and there is colder than Hamkyung Do in north Korea.

      • Dietary fat-associated osteoarthritic chondrocytes gain resistance to lipotoxicity through PKCK2/STAMP2/FSP27

        <▼1><P>Free fatty acids (FFAs), which are elevated with metabolic syndrome, are considered the principal offender exerting lipotoxicity. Few previous studies have reported a causal relationship between FFAs and osteoarthritis pathogenesis. However, the molecular mechanism by which FFAs exert lipotoxicity and induce osteoarthritis remains largely unknown. We here observed that oleate at the usual clinical range does not exert lipotoxicity while oleate at high pathological ranges exerted lipotoxicity through apoptosis in articular chondrocytes. By investigating the differential effect of oleate at toxic and nontoxic concentrations, we revealed that lipid droplet (LD) accumulation confers articular chondrocytes, the resistance to lipotoxicity. Using high fat diet-induced osteoarthritis models and articular chondrocytes treated with oleate alone or oleate plus palmitate, we demonstrated that articular chondrocytes gain resistance to lipotoxicity through protein kinase casein kinase 2 (PKCK2)—six-transmembrane protein of prostate 2 (STAMP2)—and fat-specific protein 27 (FSP27)-mediated LD accumulation. We further observed that the exertion of FFAs-induced lipotoxicity was correlated with the increased concentration of cellular FFAs freed from LDs, whether FFAs are saturated or not. In conclusion, PKCK2/STAMP2/FSP27-mediated sequestration of FFAs in LD rescues osteoarthritic chondrocytes. PKCK2/STAMP2/FSP27 should be considered for interventions against metabolic OA.</P></▼1><▼2><P><B>Oil droplets protect cartilage from toxic fatty acids</B></P><P>Cartilage tissue deals with the stress of exposure to free fatty acids by sequestering the toxic molecules into sub-cellular oil droplets. Young Hyun Yoo from Dong-A University College of Medicine in Busan, South Korea, and coworkers exposed rat cartilage cells to increasing levels of a fatty acid called oleate, a by-product of fat metabolism, and observed that the accumulation of oil droplets conferred resistance to oleate-induced toxicity. In these rat cells and in experiments involving mouse models of osteoarthritis fed a high-fat diet, the researchers then identified three of the protective proteins needed for cartilage tissue to properly quarantine fatty acids into oil droplets. Those proteins — and their connected regulatory networks — could now serve as drug targets for treating metabolic syndrome-associated osteoarthritis.</P></▼2>

      • 칸디다의 항진균제 감수성 시험과 sterol 정량 분석법에 의한 fluconazole 최소억제 농도 비교

        Background : For yeast antifungal susceptibility testing, the broth microdilution method approved by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standard (NCCLS) is available. But some isolates do not give a clear-cut end point and exhibit a "trailing" growth effect, making interpretation of test results difficult. Recently, to overcome this ambiguity, the method of ergosterol content quantitation was developed. Method : We investigated the susceptibility range of antifungal agents (fluconazole, 5-flucytosine, amphotericin B) for 228 clinical Candida isolates (62% C. albicans) with the NCCLS M27-A method. And isolates that exhibited trailing growth for fluconazole were retested with sterol quantitation method (SQM). Result : Among the 228 Candida isolates, 7 (5%) isolates showed trailing growth. The 5 C. albicans and 2 C. tropicalis isolates with trailing growth effects against fluconazole in the broth microdilution were redetermined to susceptible by SQM and the result was consistant with E-test. Conclusion : With the comparison of broth microdilution method, E-test and SQM, it was confirmed that SQM is useful for MIC determination of "trailing" growth Candida isolates.

        Promotion of formyl peptide receptor 1-mediated neutrophil chemotactic migration by antimicrobial peptides isolated from the centipede Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans

        We investigated the effects of two antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) isolated from Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans on neutrophil activity. Stimulation of mouse neutrophils with the two AMPs elicited chemotactic migration of the cells in a pertussis toxin-sensitive manner. The two AMPs also stimulated activation of ERK and Akt, which contribute to chemotactic migration of neutrophils. We found that AMP-stimulated neutrophil chemotaxis was blocked by a formyl peptide receptor (FPR) 1 antagonist (cyclosporin H); moreover the two AMPs stimulated the chemotactic migration of FPR1- expressing RBL-2H3 cells but not of vector-expressing RBL- 2H3 cells. We also found that the two AMPs stimulate neutrophil migration in vivo, and that this effect is blocked in FPR1-deficient mice. Taken together, our results suggest that the two AMPs stimulate neutrophils, leading to chemotactic migration through FPR1, and the two AMPs will be useful for the study of FPR1 signaling and neutrophil activation.       • Children's Mental Health in the Area Affected by the Hebei Spirit Oil Spill Accident

        Objectives Children are one of the most vulnerable populations to the impact of disasters. We aimed to examine children's mental health in the area affected by the Hebei Spirit oil spill accident on December 7, 2007. Methods A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted using the Korean versions of the Children's Depression Inventory and State Anxiety Inventory for Children on 1,362 children attending elementary schools in the affected area. The information on distances between the nearest contaminated coastline to the child's residential house or attending school were obtained using a web-based map by inputting two address points. The symptom risks of depression and state anxiety were estimated by multiple logistic regression analyses adjusted for age, gender, and other covariates. Results Children with the closest distance (in the fourth quartile) to the school from the contaminated coastline showed a significantly higher symptom risk of depression compared to those with the farthest distance (first quartile)(odds ratio, 2.73; 95% confidence interval, 1.40-5.33), while there was no significant association between anxiety symptoms and distance. Conclusions Children, a vulnerable population for mental health impact by the oil spill accident, should be included in mental health programs in the community along with their family as victims of the disaster.
