<P>To date, most of the luminous quasars known at z similar to 6 have been found to be in maximal accretion with the Eddington ratios, lambda(Edd) similar to 1, suggesting enhanced nuclear activities in the early universe. However, this may not be the whole picture of supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth, since previous studies have not reached faint quasars that are more likely to harbor SMBHs with low lambda(Edd). To gain a better understanding of the accretion activities in quasars in the early universe, we obtained a deep near-infrared (NIR) spectrum of a quasar, IMS J220417.92+011144.8 (hereafter IMS J2204+0112), one of the faintest quasars that has been identified at z similar to 6. From the redshifted C IV lambda 1549 emission line in the NIR spectrum, we find that IMS J2204+0112 harbors a SMBH with a solar mass of about a billion and lambda(Edd) similar to 0.1, but with a large uncertainty in both quantities (0.41 dex). IMS J2204+0112 has one of the lowest Eddington ratios among quasars at z similar to 6, but a common value among quasars at z similar to 2. Its low lambda(Edd) can be explained with two scenarios; the SMBH growth from a stellar-mass black hole through short-duration super-Eddington accretion events or from a massive black hole seed (similar to 10(5) M-circle dot) with Eddington-limited accretion. NIR spectra of more faint quasars are needed to better understand the accretion activities of SMBHs at z similar to 6.</P>

김억은 오뇌의 무도 「베를렌느 詩抄」에서 특정한 경향의 작품만을 선택하여 특정한 방향으로 번역했다. 그는 초기작 중 우울한 몽상과 불안한 내적 상태가 강하게 표현된 시로 번역 대상을 한정했고, 번역을 하면서 감정적 요소와 부정적 정서를 더욱 강화했다. 감탄사의 남용, 감탄형 종결어미의 반복, 슬픔과 눈물을 강조하는 다양한 수법이 이를 위해 동원됐다. 편향된 선택과 번역 방식의 결과는 베를렌느 시세계의 축소와 변형이다. 「베를렌느 詩抄」는 이 시인의 다양한 경향을 전혀 반영하지 않을 뿐 아니라, 감정 중심의 번역으로 원시의 미학을 거의 알아볼 수 없게 만들었다. 그 결과, 독자에게 더 크고 선명하게 다가오는 것은 베를렌느가 아니라 오히려 김억의 세계이다. 그가 주장한 “창작적” 번역론을 충실하게 구현한 사례라고 할 수 있다. 당시 오뇌의 무도가 일으킨 반향을 보면, 김억의 작품 선정과 번역 방식은 크게 성공한 셈이다. 그러나 베를렌느를 소개한다는 측면에서 보면 성공했다고 볼 수 없다. 그가 번역 작업에 “創作的 生命”을 불어넣은 만큼, 베를렌느의 실상은 은폐되었고, 그로 인해 이 프랑스 시인에 대한 객관적이고 폭넓은 이해와 ‘공정한’ 평가는 오히려 지체되었다. Il a limité l’objet de sa traduction aux premiers poèmes de Verlaine, surtout ceux qui expriment avec force des rêves sombres et des états intérieurs anxieux. Ensuite, il a exagéré dans sa traduction tout ce qui relève des sentiments et des émotions négatives. Pour cela, diverses méthodes ont été mobilisées : l abus d exclamations, la répétition du suffixe flexionnel terminatif du mode exclamatif, l’accentuation de la tristesse et des larmes. Ses parti pris de sélection et de traduction provoquent inévitablement la réduction et la déformation du monde poétique de Verlaine : d’une part, les traductions de Kim Eok ne reflètent pas les diverses tendances du poète ; d’autre part, elles rendent son esthétique difficilement reconnaissable. Plus le traducteur introduit sa subjectivité, plus la vérité poétique de Verlaine est occultée : la compréhension globale et objective de son oeuvre, ainsi que son évaluation «juste», s’en trouvent donc retardées.

<B>Objectives</B><P>We investigate possible differences in neural correlates of empathy processing between abstinent methamphetamine (MA) abusers and healthy subjects using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).</P><B>Methods</B><P>Nineteen abstinent MA abusers (mean age of 36.06 years, range 31–52 years) and 19 healthy subjects (mean age of 37.05 years, range 33–42 years) participated in this study. A visual fMRI activation paradigm was used, comprising a series of cartoons, each depicting a short story. There were two categories of stories: empathy (Empathy) and Physical causality (Physical). fMRI images were acquired using a 3.0 T whole-body scanner. All fMRI data were analyzed using MATLAB v. 7.2 and SPM5.</P><B>Results</B><P>Both MA subjects and controls exhibited activation in the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex. Despite this similarity in activation patterns, we found that the two groups differed in the activation of several cortical regions associated with the processing of empathy information. Hypoactivations of the orbitofrontal cortex, temporal poles, and hippocampus in MA abusers relative to healthy subjects suggests that the ability of empathic response could be compromised in abstinent MA abusers (p < 0.05, corrected for a small volume).</P><B>Conclusions</B><P>Functional impairments in the empathic neural network caused by MA may contribute to the misunderstanding of others and to the erosion of social interactions in MA abusers. <P>Motor imagery is a mental rehearsal of simple or complex motor acts without overt body movement. It has been proposed that the association between performance and the mental rehearsal period that precedes the voluntary movement is an important point of difference between highly trained athletes and beginners. We compared the activation maps of elite archers and nonarchers during mental rehearsal of archery to test whether the neural correlates of elite archers were more focused and efficiently organised than those of nonarchers. Brain activation was measured using functional MRI in 18 right-handed elite archers and 18 right-handed nonarchers. During the active functional MRI imagery task, the participants were instructed to mentally rehearse their archery shooting from a first-person perspective. The active imagery condition was tested against the nonmotor imagery task as a control condition. The results showed that the premotor and supplementary motor areas, and the inferior frontal region, basal ganglia and cerebellum, were active in nonarchers, whereas elite archers showed activation primarily in the supplementary motor areas. In particular, our result of higher cerebellar activity in nonarchers indicates the increased participation of the cerebellum in nonarchers when learning an unfamiliar archery task. Therefore, the difference in cerebellar activation between archers and nonarchers provides evidence of the expertise effect in the mental rehearsal of archery. In conclusion, the relative economy in the cortical processes of elite archers could contribute to greater consistency in performing the specific challenge in which they are highly practised.</P>
Characteristics of Ballistic Tansport in Short-Channel MOSFETs

The Si MOSFET is the single most important unit of any digital or analog circuit today. As it is scaled down to the nanometer region, charge carriers (electrons and holes) in the channel are expected to ow with fewer scattering events, leading to ballistic transport. In this work, the characteristics of the quasi-ballistic MOSFET are systematically investigated by taking into account scattering phenomena of the carriers. For a practical viewpoint, a conventional MOSFET structure is exploited. Numerical calculations of potential prole are carried out, in order to understand and quantify the transport as functions of gate and drain voltages under various conditions.

We investigated the (ballistic) current-voltage (I-V ) characteristics in a 100-nm ..-gate AlGaAs/InGaAs Pseudomorphic high-electron-mobility transistor (pHEMT) as a function of temperature for temperatures ranging from 300 K to 10 K and analyzed the transport in terms of carrier backscattering. We observed that the drain current in the linear region dramatically increased below 60 K due to reduced phonon scattering. The critical temperature where the drain current started to rapidly increase shifted to a higher value as the drain voltage was increased. These results are in good agreement with the ballistic transport theory in which low temperatures and high electric fields along the channel lead to enhanced ballistic transport due to a reduction in the backscattering probability. We also carried out self-consistent Schrodinger-Poisson band profile calculations to understand the experimental data.

최근 전자상거래의 활성화와 더불어 기존의 유선인터넷에서 사용하고 있는 전자지갑 (S/W)등 전자상거래 방식에서 Smart Cαrd 나 이동통신 단말기와 같은 독립적인 유/ 무선 단일을 사용하는 전자지불 시스템에 대한 관심이 고조되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 전자지불 시스템에 Bluetooth를 이용하여 안전한 사용자 인증 및 종단간의 보안을 제공 전자화폐의 발행/지불이 가능한 전자지불 시스템의 모델을 제시하고자 한다. 각 단일의 서브셋(subset)으로 Bluetooth 컨트롤 시스템과 이를 이용하는 전자지불 시스템으로서 전자지갑 및 전자화폐 발행기/자동판매기를 구현하여 각각의 보안 통신과 전자화폐의 발행/지불이 가능함을 나타냈다. 구현 결과물은 실제 전자지불 시스템에 적용이 가능할 것으로 보인다.
