Objective-As mental health problems may play an important role in initiating and maintaining cigarette smoking in females and there are an increasing number of female smokers, we evaluated the relationship between smoking status and mental health problems including depression and suicide ideation in women in Korea. Methods-We analyzed the 5-year cumulative data (19 years of age or older, n=32,184) from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) conducted from 2008 to 2012. Logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate associations between cigarette smoking status and mental health parameters while controlling for potentially confounding variables. Results-Among current smokers, females showed higher lifetime prevalence in having a depressive episode, a doctor-diagnosed major depression, a current diagnosis of depression, or receiving treatment for depression in comparison with males. In addition, females were more likely to report on having a depressive episode, suicidal ideation and attempts, and psychiatric counselling within the previous year, as compared to males. Female former smokers showed intermediate characteristics in parameters of mental health status within the previous year, ranking between lifetime non-smokers and the current smokers. Conclusion-Identifying the factors related to mental health status among current smokers can increase opportunities for an early intervention and help reduce the prevalence of smoking and increase smoking cessation rates particularly in females. Developing adaptive coping strategies other than smoking in female youth is potentially important in reducing the initiation of smoking.

Objectives: In March 2023, an alternative school in the Republic of Korea reported 12 cases of shigellosis. This study aims to analyze the epidemiological characteristics in order to determine the cause of the cluster outbreak of shigellosis and to develop prevention strategies.Methods: This study focused on 12 patients with confirmed Shigella infection and investigated their demographics, clinical features, epidemiology, diagnostics, and antimicrobial susceptibility. Following the identification of Shigella, we conducted follow-up rectal smear cultures to manage patients, implementing isolation and control measures.Results: This study investigated the emergence of multidrug-resistant Shigella following missionary activities in Cambodia, documenting a cluster infection within an alternative school in Daejeon, the Republic of Korea. The outbreak affected 56 participants, resulting in the confirmation of 12 cases. The incidence rates varied by gender and occupation, with higher rates among males and teachers. All 12 cases demonstrated multidrug resistance. Challenges included delayed pathogen confirmation and suboptimal adherence to isolation criteria. The incident prompted revisions in the criteria for isolation release, focusing on symptom resolution. The study underscores the necessity for strengthened surveillance, educational initiatives focusing on prevention in endemic areas, and improved oversight of unlicensed educational establishments.Conclusion: Successful response strategies included swift situation assessment, collaborative efforts, effective infection control measures, and modified criteria for isolation release. Continued surveillance of multidrug-resistant strains is recommended, especially in regions with a high prevalence.
QSCCII와 MBTI의 비교분석을 통한 사상체질의 성격유형 연구

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychological characteristics of Sasang Constitutions by MBTI(Myers-Briggs Type Indicator). Methods: This study was carried out on 154(101/53) of Oriental Medical College ar Kyunghee University. After determining the Sasang Constitutions(Soeumin, Soyangin, Taeumin) by QSCC II, the psychological characteristics of each group were analysed by MBTI. Results: 1) The findings show that there are 72.2% of agreement in discriminant analysis by MBTI question item for differentiating among Soeumin, Soyangin and Taeumin. 2) The findings show that there are 57.9% of agreement in discriminant analysis by MBTI score for differentiating among Soeumin, Soyangin and Taeumin. 3) Soeumin group showed more preference for Introversion. 4) Taeumin group showed more preference for Sensing. 5) Soyangin group tended to be Intuition, Perception types. Conclusion: The results show that there are significant relationships between Sasang Constitutions and MBTI psychological types. The findings indicated that MBTI could be useful tool to understand psychological characteristics of Sasang constitutions.

This study was carried out to investigate correlation with food preference of subjects in three constitution groups on the view point of constitutional medicine. The cnstitutions of 124 college students (male 80, female 44) was classified by QSCC II method. Food preference of the subjects was surveyed in accordance with suggested foods for each constitution and was analyzed using Hedonic scale. The distribution of the constitutional revealed that Soeum individuals accounts 53%, followed by ; Soyang 19%, Taeum 28%. For men, sorghum, potatoes, beef, scombroid, oyster, pctopus, codfish, walleye pollack, shrimp, croaker, pineapple, eggplant, leek, pumpkin, toenjang, draft beer, diluted liquor, coffee, cocoa were statistically different in food preference score by sasang constitution(p<0.05). For woman, chicken, pollack roe, a walleye pollack, persimmon, jujube, melon, citron, celery, burdock, vinegar, bean-paste, soup, draft beer, ginseng, honey were statistically different in food preference score by sasang constitution(p<0.05). Association of sasang constitutions and food thought to be harmful or healthy to reach constitution was analyzed. But Food preference score of food thought to be harmful or healthy were not statistically different in score among sasang constitutions. This results suggested that food intake pattern of subjects were associated with sasang constitutional food in parts.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Despite frequent detection of ibuprofen in aquatic environments, the hazards associated with long-term exposure to ibuprofen have seldom been investigated. Ibuprofen is suspected of influencing sex steroid hormones through steroidogenic pathways in both vertebrates and invertebrates. In this study, the effect of ibuprofen on sex hormone balance and the associated mechanisms was investigated <I>in vitro</I> by use of H295R cells. We also conducted chronic toxicity tests using freshwater fish, <I>Oryzias latipes</I>, and two freshwater cladocerans, <I>Daphnia magna</I> and <I>Moina macrocopa</I>, for up to 144 and 21d of exposure, respectively. Ibuprofen exposure increased 17β-estradiol (E2) production and aromatase activity in H295R cells. Testosterone (T) production decreased in a dose-dependent manner. For <I>D. magna</I>, the 48h immobilization EC50 was 51.4mg/L and the 21d reproduction NOEC was <1.23mg/L; for <I>M. macrocopa</I>, the 48h immobilization EC50 was 72.6mg/L and the 7d reproduction NOEC was 25mg/L. For <I>O. latipes</I>, 120d survival NOEC was 0.0001mg/L. In addition, ibuprofen affected several endpoints related to reproduction of the fish, including induction of vitellogenin in male fish, fewer broods per pair, and more eggs per brood. Parental exposure to as low as 0.0001mg/L ibuprofen delayed hatching of eggs even when they were transferred to and cultured in clean water. Delayed hatching is environmentally relevant because this may increase the risk of being predated. For <I>O. latipes</I>, the acute-to-chronic ratio of ibuprofen was estimated to be greater than 1000. Overall, relatively high acute-to-chronic ratio and observation of reproduction damage in medaka fish at environmentally relevant ranges of ibuprofen warrant the need for further studies to elucidate potential ecological consequences of ibuprofen contamination in the aquatic environment.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Gemfibrozil, a lipid-regulating pharmaceutical, has been widely used for treating dyslipidemia in humans and detected frequently in freshwater environments. Since plasma cholesterol is a precursor of steroid hormones, the use of gemfibrozil may influence the sex hormone balances. However, its endocrine toxicity following long-term exposure is not well understood. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of gemfibrozil on sex hormones and reproductive outcomes in a freshwater fish, following a long-term (155 d) exposure. For this purpose, Japanese medaka embryos (F0) were exposed to a series of gemfibrozil concentrations, i.e., 0, 0.04, 0.4, 3.7, and 40 mg/L for 155 d, and reproductive parameters, sex hormones, and associated gene expressions were assessed. For comparison, a short-term exposure (21 d) was performed separately with adult medaka and measured for sex hormones and related gene expressions. Following the 155 d long-term exposure, the fecundity showed a decreasing pattern. In addition, at 3.7 mg/L gemfibrozil, testosterone (T) level in the female fish was significantly decreased, and the hatchability of F1 fish was significantly decreased. The <I>estrogen receptor</I> (<I>er)</I> or <I>vitellogenin</I> (<I>vtg)</I> genes in gonads and liver were up-regulated. However, plasma cholesterol levels did not show significant changes in both sexes. The observations from the short-term (21 d) exposure were different from those of the long-term exposure. Following the short-term exposure, decreased 17β-estradiol (E2), and 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) levels along with decrease plasma cholesterol were observed in the male fish. The hormone disruption following the short-term exposure appears to be associated with the hypocholesterolemic activity of gemfibrozil. Our results show that the mechanisms of gemfibrozil toxicity may depend on the exposure duration. Consequences of long-term exposure to other fibrates in the water environment warrant further investigations.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Exposure to gemfibrozil led to sex hormone and reproduction changes in fish. </LI> <LI> Changes in steroidogenesis and cholesterol levels were different by exposure duration. </LI> <LI> Long-term (155 d) exposure from embryo stage caused weak estrogenic responses. </LI> <LI> Short-term adult exposure caused decreased E2 levels. </LI> </UL> </P>
