MOA-2011-BLG-293Lb: A TEST OF PURE SURVEY MICROLENSING PLANET DETECTIONS
Yee, J. C.,Shvartzvald, Y.,Gal-Yam, A.,Bond, I. A.,Udalski, A.,Kozłowski, S.,Han, C.,Gould, A.,Skowron, J.,Suzuki, D.,Abe, F.,Bennett, D. P.,Botzler, C. S.,Chote, P.,Freeman, M.,Fukui, A.,Furusawa, K. IOP Publishing 2012 The Astrophysical journal Vol.755 No.2

Because of the development of large-format, wide-field cameras, microlensing surveys are now able to monitor millions of stars with sufficient cadence to detect planets. These new discoveries will span the full range of significance levels including planetary signals too small to be distinguished from the noise. At present, we do not understand where the threshold is for detecting planets. MOA-2011-BLG-293Lb is the first planet to be published from the new surveys, and it also has substantial follow-up observations. This planet is robustly detected in survey+follow-up data (Delta chi(2) similar to 5400). The planet/host mass ratio is q = (5.3 similar to 0.2) x 10(-3). The best-fit projected separation is s = 0.548 +/- 0.005 Einstein radii. However, due to the s <-> s(-1) degeneracy, projected separations of s-1 are only marginally disfavored at Delta chi(2) = 3. A Bayesian estimate of the host mass gives M-L = 0.43(-0.17)(+0.27) M-circle dot, with a sharp upper limit of M-L < 1.2 M-circle dot from upper limits on the lens flux. Hence, the planet mass is m(p) = 2.4(-0.9)(+1.5) M-Jup, and the physical projected separation is either r(perpendicular to) similar or equal to 1.0 AU or r(perpendicular to) similar or equal to 3.4 AU. We show that survey data alone predict this solution and are able to characterize the planet, but the Delta chi(2) is much smaller (Delta chi(2) similar to 500) than with the follow-up data. The Delta chi(2) for the survey data alone is smaller than for any other securely detected planet. This event suggests a means to probe the detection threshold, by analyzing a large sample of events like MOA-2011-BLG-293, which have both follow-up data and high-cadence survey data, to provide a guide for the interpretation of pure survey microlensing data.

Interference Effect betweenϕandΛ(1520)Production Channels in theγp→K+K−pReaction near Threshold

The phi-Lambda(1520) interference effect in the gamma p -> K(+)K(-)p reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between phi and Lambda(1520) production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when K+K- pairs are observed at forward angles but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the root s = 2.1 GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for phi photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange, or rescattering processes via other hyperon states.

We compare the CO (J = 1-0) and HI emission in the Large Magellanic Cloud in three dimensions, i.e., including a velocity axis in addition to the two spatial axes, with the aim of elucidating the physical connection between giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and their surrounding Hi gas. The CO J = 1-0 data set is from the second NANTEN CO survey and the HI data set is from the merged Australia Telescope Compact Array ( ATCA) and Parkes Telescope surveys. The major findings of our analysis are as follows: (1) GMCs are associated with an envelope of HI emission, (2) in GMCs [average CO intensity] proportional to [ average Hi intensity](1.1 +/- 0.1), and (3) the HI intensity tends to increase with the star formation activity within GMCs, from Type I to Type III. An analysis of the HI envelopes associated with GMCs shows that their average line width is 14 km s(-1) and the mean density in the envelope is 10 cm(-3). We argue that the HI envelopes are gravitationally bound by GMCs. These findings are consistent with a continual increase in the mass of GMCs via HI accretion at an accretion rate of 0.05 M-circle dot yr(-1) over a timescale of 10 Myr. The growth of GMCs is terminated via dissipative ionization and/or stellar-wind disruption in the final stage of GMC evolution.

We report the measurement of the gamma p -> K+Lambda and gamma p -> K+Sigma(0) reactions at SPring-8. The differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries are measured at forward K+ production angles using linearly polarized tagged-photon beams in the range of E-gamma = 1.5-3.0 GeV. With increasing photon energy, the cross sections for both gamma p -> K+Lambda and gamma p -> K+Sigma(0) reactions decrease slowly. Distinct narrow structures in the production cross section have not been found at E gamma = 1.5-3.0 GeV. The forward peaking in the angular distributions of cross sections, a characteristic feature of t-channel exchange, is observed for the production of Lambda in the whole observed energy range. A lack of similar feature for Sigma(0) production reflects a less dominant role of t-channel contribution in this channel. The photon-beam asymmetries remain positive for both reactions, suggesting the dominance of K* exchange in the t channel. These asymmetries increase gradually with the photon energy, and have a maximum value of +0.6 for both reactions. Comparison with theoretical predictions based on the Regge trajectory in the t channel and the contributions of nucleon resonances indicates the major role of t-channel contributions as well as non-negligible effects of nucleon resonances in accounting for the reaction mechanism of hyperon photoproduction in this photon energy regime.

Differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries for the (gamma) over right arrowp -> pi(+) n reaction have been measured for 0.6 < cos theta(pi) < 1 and E-gamma = 1.5-2.95 GeV at SPring-8/LEPS. The cross sections monotonically decrease as the photon beam energy increases for 0.6 < cos theta(pi) < 0.9. However, the energy dependence of the cross sections for 0.9 < cos theta(pi) < 1 and E-gamma = 1.5-2.2 GeV (W = 1.9-2.2 GeV) is different, which may be due to a nucleon or Delta resonance. The present cross sections agree well with the previous cross sections measured by other groups and show forward peaking, suggesting significant t-channel contributions in this kinematical region. The asymmetries are found to be positive, which can be explained by rho exchange in the t channel. Large positive asymmetries in the small-vertical bar t vertical bar region, where the rho-exchange contribution becomes small, could be explained by introducing p-exchange interference with the s channel.

Differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries for the gamma(->)p -> Pi(-)Delta(++)(1232) reaction have been measured for 0.7 < cos Theta(c.m.)(Pi) < 1 and E-gamma= 1.5-2.95 GeV at SPring-8/LEPS. The first-ever high statistics cross-section data are obtained in this kinematical region, and the asymmetry data for 1.5 < E-gamma(GeV) < 2.8 are obtained for the first time. This reaction has a unique feature for studying the production mechanisms of a pure uu quark pair in the final state from the proton. Although there is no distinct peak structure in the cross sections, a non-negligible excess over the theoretical predictions is observed at E-gamma= 1.5-1.8 GeV. The asymmetries are found to be negative in most of the present kinematical regions, suggesting the dominance of n exchange in the t channel. The negative asymmetries at forward meson production angles are different from the asymmetries previously measured for the photoproduction reactions producing a dd(-) or an ss quark pair in the final state. Advanced theoretical models introducing nucleon resonances and additional unnatural-parity exchanges are needed to reproduce the present data.

Trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been reported to inhibit the adipocyte differentiation of preadipocytes in non-ruminant animals (mice, rat, and human). However, the effects of trans-10, cis-12 CLA have not been clear in ruminants. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of trans-10, cis-12 CLA on adipocyte differentiation of ovine preadipocytes. Differentiation of these preadipocytes was facilitated by treatment with trans-10, cis-12 CLA. Trans-10, cis-12 CLA increased the number and size of oil red O-stainable lipid drops as well as the levels of GPDH activity. PPAR-$\gamma{2}$ and adipophilin mRNA, adipogenic marker genes, were increased by treatment with trans-10, cis-12 CLA. This result was different from that observed with 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, a clonal cell line derived from rodents. Furthermore, trans-10, cis-12 CLA alone induced the adipocyte differentiation of ovine preadipocytes in differentiation-induction medium without troglitazone. These results suggest that CLA is an inducer and regulator in adipocyte differentiation of ovine preadipocytes, with species differences between ovine and rodent preadipocytes.
USING ORBITAL EFFECTS TO BREAK THE CLOSE/WIDE DEGENERACY IN BINARY-LENS MICROLENSING EVENTS
Shin, I.-G.,Sumi, T.,Udalski, A.,Choi, J. Y.,Han, C.,Gould, A.,Abe, F.,Bennett, D. P.,Bond, I. A.,Botzler, C. S.,Chote, P.,Freeman, M.,Fukui, A.,Furusawa, K.,Harris, P.,Itow, Y.,Ling, C. H.,Masuda, K. IOP Publishing 2013 The Astrophysical journal Vol.764 No.1

Microlensing can provide an important tool to study binaries, especially those composed of faint or dark objects. However, accurate analysis of binary-lens light curves is often hampered by the well-known degeneracy between close (s < 1) and wide (s > 1) binaries, which can be very severe due to an intrinsic symmetry in the lens equation. Here, s is the normalized projected binary separation. In this paper, we propose a method that can resolve the close/wide degeneracy using the effect of a lens orbital motion on lensing light curves. The method is based on the fact that the orbital effect tends to be important for close binaries while it is negligible for wide binaries. We demonstrate the usefulness of the method by applying it to an actually observed binary-lens event MOA-2011-BLG-040/OGLE-2011-BLG-0001, which suffers from severe close/wide degeneracy. From this, we are able to uniquely specify that the lens is composed of K- and M-type dwarfs located similar to 3.5 kpc from the Earth.
