Phase II study of preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with irinotecan plus S-1 in locally advanced rectal cancer

Background and purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of preoperative radiation therapy combined with S-1 and irinotecan (SI) in LARC. Materials and methods: Patients were considered LARC if they had a T3/T4 lesion or node positive. Weekly doses of 40mg/m<SUP>2</SUP> irinotecan were intravenously administered once per week during weeks 1-5 of radiotherapy. S-1 (70mg/m<SUP>2</SUP>) was given from Monday to Friday in all weeks of radiotherapy. 3-D conformal radiotherapy was given at daily fractions of 1.8Gy for 5days for a total dose of 50.4 (45+5.4)Gy. Surgery was performed 4-6weeks following the completion of chemoradiation. Results: Between June 2006 and November 2007, 43 pts were enrolled. The stage was: cT3 24 patients, cT4 6 patients; 28 patients were cN+. Forty-one patients completed the chemoradiation and 42 patients underwent operation: a low anterior resection was performed in 36 patients, a total colectomy in 1 patient, and an abdominal perineal resection in 5 patients. T downstaging was observed in 50%; 23 N+ patients became N- (55%). The complete pathological response was observed in 9 patients (21%). The 3-year locoregional failure rate, distant failure rate, disease-free survival, and overall survival were 9.5%, 18.6%, 72.1%, and 94.3%, respectively. Only three patients experienced G3 diarrhea; one had G3 sepsis and two had septic shock. Hematological toxicity (G3-G4) was observed in five patients. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the efficacy of preoperative CRT with S-1 and irinotecan with 21% of complete response. However, prompt recognition and management of infection is needed to use it in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer.

health promotion behavior of middle aged men and the relationship among the above factors. Methods: Subjects of the research were 325 middle aged men in Korea. The questionnaires were composed of general characteristics, Health Self Rating Scale, FACES-Ⅲ : Family Adaptability & Cohesion Evaluation Scale Ⅲ, Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile. Data were statistically analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test and Pearson’s correlation. Results: Middle aged men whose perceived economic status are low show lower perceived health status than moderate and high (F=3.364, p=.010). Health promotion behavior in the age 40-44 shows lower level than 60-64 (F=2.984, p=.019). Middle aged men who have Economically dependent adult in the first child show higher level in health promotion behavior than who have Middle & High school student in the first child (F=2.468, p=.045). In the middle aged men, perceived health status and family cohesion show positive correlation (r=.341, p<.01). Perceived health status and health promotion behavior show positive correlation (r=.500, p<.01). Family cohesion and health promotion behavior show posotive correlation (r=.564, p<.01). Conclusions: We analyzed influencing factor and a relationship between perceived health status, family cohesion and health promotion behavior. Accordingly, we can think of applying nursing interventions to the middle aged men considering the general characteristics. Also we can think of applying nursing interventions and educations to help them evaluate their perceived health status and include the support of family members for the health promotion behavior.

Roseovarius halotolerans sp. nov., isolated from deep seawater

<P>A Gram-reaction-negative, non-motile, aerobic bacterium, designated HJ50(T), was isolated from deep seawater of the East Sea, South Korea. Cells were ovoid to rod-shaped (0.5-0.8x1.3-3.0 mum), often with unequal ends, suggesting a budding mode of reproduction. The strain had an absolute requirement for sea salts and tolerated up to 20 % (w/v) sea salts. Propionate, dl-lactate, 2-ketogluconate, 3-hydroxybutyrate and rhamnose were used as growth substrates, but not mannitol, salicin, 4-hydroxybenzoate or acetate. The major fatty acid was summed feature 7 (C(18 : 1)omega7c/omega9t/omega12t) and the DNA G+C content was 59.0+/-0.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that this strain was affiliated with the genus Roseovarius. Similarities between the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain HJ50(T) (1430 nt) and those of type strains of members of the genus Roseovarius were 94.1-96.3 %. DNA-DNA relatedness values between strain HJ50(T) and the type strains of members of the genus Roseovarius were low (1.3-24.6 %). Physiological and biochemical differences support assignment of strain HJ50(T) to the genus Roseovarius as a representative of a novel species. The name Roseovarius halotolerans sp. nov. is proposed, with HJ50(T) (=KCTC 22224(T) =LMG 24468(T)) as the type strain.</P>

Low carbon steel (S20C steel) and SPCC steel sheet have been austenitic nitrided at 700℃ in a closed pit type furnace by changing the flow rate of ammonia gas and heat treating time. When the flow rate of ammonia gas was low, the concentration of residual ammonia appeared low and the hardness value of transformed surface layer was high. The depth of the surface layer, however, was shallow. With increasing the concentration of residual ammonia by raising up the ammonia gas flow, both the depth of the surface layer and the pore depth increased, while the maximum hardness of the surface layer decreased. By introducing a large amount of ammonia gas in a short time, a deep surface layer with minimal pores on the outermost surface was obtained. In this experiment, while maintaining 10~12% of residual ammonia, the flow rate of inlet ammonia gas, 7 liter/min, was introduced at 700℃ for 1 hour. In this condition, the thickness of the surface layer without pores appeared about 60 μm in S20C steel and 30 μm in SPCC steel plate. Injecting additional methane gas (carburizing gas) to this condition played a deteriorating effect due to promoting the formation of vertical pores in the surface layer. For 1^st transformed surface layer for S20C steel, maintaining 10~12% residual ammonia condition via austenitic nitriding process resulted in ε phase with relatively high nitrogen concentration (just below 4.23 wt.%N) among the mixed phases of ε+γ. The ε phase was formed a specific orientation perpendicular to the surface. For 2^nd transformed layer for S20C steel, γ phase was rather dominant (just above 2.63 wt.%N). For SPCC steel sheet, there appeared three phases, γ, α(M) and weak ε phase. The nitrogen concentration would be approximately 2.6 wt.% in these phases condition.

A trap baited with multiple pheromones attracts sympatric hemipteran pests of sweet persimmon

Sympatric hemipterans such as Riptortus pedestris Thunberg (Hemiptera: Alydidae), Plautia stali Scott (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), and Halyomorpha halys Stal (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) are reported as economic pests of persimmon fruits in Korea and Japan. Multi-attractiveness of the aggregation pheromones (AP) of R. pedestris and P. stali mounted on a single sticky trap was evaluated for the sympatric hemipteran pests of persimmon fruit. Four trap types were prepared; traps mounted with R. pedestris AP alone (lure R), P. stali AP alone (lure P), R. pedestris and P. stali AP mixed in a septum (lure R+P), and traps with two parallel lures (lure R/P). R. pedestris was equally captured in traps carrying lures R+P and R/P. P. stali and Gymnosoma rotundatum (Diptera: Tachinidae), a parasitoid of P. stali, were attracted to the traps included P. stali AP lures; P, R+P, and R/P. All traps carrying lure P attracted H. halys and Glaucias subpunctatus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), a pest of Japanese cedar and cypress, with no significant difference from control. This study shows that a single trap baited with pheromones of R. pedestris and P. stali together, mixed, or set in parallel, is effective to attract sympatric hemipteran pests of sweet persimmon, R. pedestris, P. stali, G. subpunctatus, and H. halys, in addition to G. rotundatum. Attracting multispecies simultaneously could be a viable option in managing these sympatric pest species.

Proteomic Analysis Reveals PGAM1 Altering cis-9, trans-11 Conjugated Linoleic Acid Synthesis in Bovine Mammary Gland.

<P>cis-9, trans-11 Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is one of the most extensively studied CLA isomers due to its multiple isomer-specific effects. However, the molecular mechanisms of cis-9,trans-11 CLA synthesis in ruminant mammary gland are still not clearly understood. This process may be mediated, to a certain extent, by trans-11 C18:1 regulated by stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (SCD1) and/or its syntrophic proteins. This study aimed to investigate the effects of TVA on SCD1-mediated cis-9,trans-11 CLA synthesis in MAC-T cells and its potential molecular mechanism. Results showed that trans-11 C18:1 was continually taken up and converted into cis-9,trans-11 CLA in MAC-T cells during the 4-h incubation of 50?μM trans-11 C18:1. SCD1 protein expression increased more than twofold at 2?h (P?<?0.01) and 2.5?h (P?<?0.05) before decreasing to less than half of the normal level at 4?h (P?<?0.05). One up-regulated (RAS guanyl releasing protein 4 isoform 1 [RASGRP4]) and six down-regulated proteins (glucosamine-6-phosphate deaminase 1 [GNPDA1], triosephosphate isomerase [TPI1], phosphoglycerate mutase 1 [PGAM1], heat shock protein beta-1 [HSPB1], annexin A3 [ANXA3], thiopurine S-methyltransferase [TPMT]) were found in MAC-T cells treated with trans-11 C18:1. Of these seven identified proteins, the presence of GNPDA1 and PGAM1 was verified in several models. More trans-11 C18:1 was taken up after PGAM1 knockdown by small interfering RNA (siRNA). In conclusion, our data suggested that PGAM1 may have a negative relationship with SCD1 and seemed to be involved in cis-9, trans-11 CLA synthesis by facilitating the absorption of trans-11 C18:1 in the bovine mammary gland.</P>

Uniformity of the newly opened two experimental fields was evaluated to choosing a good experimentation technique. Field I was proved to be unavailable for the experimental purposes. Regular square or rectangle shape of plots extending north to south is recommended to make experimental plots in Field II. In case that the 10 percent margin of error using the mean value is equivalent to specifying the variance of the mean, five replications are required for four sqm plot, four replications for eight sqm, and three replications for 10 sq m or more.
