Soil salinity is one of the most serious abiotic stresses limiting the productivity of agricultural crops. To cope with salt stress, plants respond with physiological, developmental and biochemical changes, including the synthesis of a number of proteins and the induction of gene expression. Salicornia herbacea is a halophytic plant that grows in salt marches and on muddy seashores. In order to understand the biochemical and molecular mechanisms of salt tolerance in S. herbacea, we isolated several genes that involved in the salt tolerance by mRNA differential display.Here we report the cloning of a cDNA encoding fructose-1, 6-bisphosphate aldolase, named ShADL, which is 1293 bp long and contains an open reading frame consisted of 359 amino acids with calculated molecular mass of 39 kDa. ShADL protein showed 86% identity with Arabidopsis and 78% with aldolase of common ice plant. Northern blot analysis revealed that the transcript of ShADL gene was increased dramatically depending on the NaCI concentrations.

Nucleophilic addition reactions of benzylamines $(XC_6H_4CH_2NH_2)\;to\;{\beta}$-cyanostilbenes ($YC_6H_4CH=C(CN)C_6H_4$Y’) have been studied in acetonitrile at 30.0 oC. A greater degree of N-$C_{\alpha}$ bond formation (larger ${\beta}_X$) is obtained with a stronger electron-withdrawing substituent in either ${\alpha}-\;(\delta\sigma_Y\;{\gt}\;0)\;or\;{\beta}-ring\;(\delta\sigma_{Y'}\;{\gt}$ 0). A stronger charge development is observed in the TS on $C_{\beta}\;(\rho_{Y'}$= 1.06 for X=Y=H) rather than on $C_{\alpha}\;(\rho_{Y}$ = 0.62 for X=Y’H) indicating the lag in the resonance development into the activating group (CN) on $C_{\beta}$ in the transition state. Similarly, the magnitude of $\rho$$_{XY'}$(−0.72) is greater than $\rho_{XY}$ (−0.66) due to a stronger interaction of the nucleophile with $\beta$-ring than $\alpha$-ring. The positive sign of $\rho_{YY'}$correctly reflects $\pi$ bond cleavage between the two rings in the TS. Relatively large kinetic isotope effects ($k_H/k_D\;{\geq}$ 2.0) involving deuterated nucleophiles ($XC_6H_4CH_2ND_2$) suggest a four-membered cyclic TS in which concurrent N-C$_{\alpha}$ and H(D)-C$_{\beta}$ bond formation occurs.

<P>We have fabricated a tunable external cavity laser (T-ECL) based on a superluminescent diode and a polymeric waveguide Bragg reflector, providing a cost-effective solution for wavelength division multiplexing-passive optical network (WDM-PON) systems. The wavelength of the T-ECL is tuned through 100 GHz-spacing 16 channels by the thermo-optic tuning of the refractive index of the polymer waveguide at a low input power of 70 mW. The maximum output power and the slope efficiency of the uncooled diode at 20 (75) degrees C are 8.83 (3.80) mW and 0.107 (0.061) W/A, respectively. The T-ECL operated successfully in the direct modulation for 1.25 Gbit/s transmissions over 20 km.</P>
Distribution of Airborne Microorganisms in Yellow Sands of Korea

Distribution of airborne microorganisms was determined with two different types of air samplers, the Anderson cascade sampler and the Aerobioscope sampler, in the vicinity of Taejon. The size distribution of particles carrying bacteria and fungi was concurrently measured. The concentration of detected viable airborne particles was greatly varied. It was observed that the number of microbial particles increased in April and October. The most isze o particles carrying bacteria was larger than 4.7 .mu.m in mean aerodiameter, which made up 69.8% of the total particle fraction. About 63.2% of fungi-carrying particles were smaller than 4.7 .mu.m in aerodiameter. The distribution of particles on Yellow Sand Phenomena days was also analyzed. The number of fine particles having mass median aero-diameter from 1.0 to 10.mu.m increased on Yellow Sand Phenomena days to about 6 times that on normal days and the n umber of colony forming unit (CFU/$\textrm{m}^3$) of airborne bacteria also increased by 4.3 times in April. The reuslts from the Anderson sampler showed that the concentration of bacteria increased greatly on the fraction of fine particles ranging from 0.6 $\mu$m to 4.7 $\mu$m in diameter. Unlike the increase in bacterial floraon Yellow Sand Phenomena days, the fungal concentration slightly decreased and showed a normal size distribution parttern. This study suggests that a long-range transmission of bacteria results form bacteria adsorbing onto the fine particles during the Yellow Sand Phenomena.
Capsule endoscopy in small bowel tumors: A multicenter Korean study

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><B>Background and Aim: </B> Capsule endoscopy (CE) has proven to be highly effective at detecting small bowel lesions in a variety of clinical conditions, but studies concerning the practical impact of CE on small bowel tumors are still scarce, especially in the Asian population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic and therapeutic impact of CE in the field of small bowel tumors.</P><P><B>Methods: </B> CE records consecutively pooled from the beginning of use of CE in Korea, October 2001 until April 2008, in 14 centers throughout Korea were reviewed. Clinical information and CE video images of small bowel tumors were analyzed.</P><P><B>Results: </B> A total of 1332 cases undergoing CE were reviewed with all clinical indications. Small bowel tumors were diagnosed with CE in 57 (4.3%) of 1332 patients. The tumors were malignant in 33 cases, and included three adenocarcinomas, eight lymphomas, 20 gastrointestinal stromal tumors, and two metastatic cancers. The most frequent indications for CE in malignant tumors were obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, followed by abdominal pain and weight loss. Thirty of 57 tumors were identified exclusively by CE (diagnostic impact = 30/57), and they were smaller in size (mean, range: 14.3 mm, 2–35 mm) compared to the other tumors detected in radiological studies (48.7 mm, 10–110 mm). Seven patients underwent surgical resection (therapeutic impact = 7/57).</P><P><B>Conclusion: </B> CE effectively identifies small bowel tumors that are undetectable by conventional radiological studies (diagnostic impact = 52.6%) and can critically change the therapeutic course (therapeutic impact = 12.3%).</P>

<P>Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) papain-like protease (PLpro) is a key enzyme that plays an important role in SARS virus replication. The ethanol extract of the seeds of <I>Psoralea corylifolia</I> showed high activity against the SARS-CoV PLpro with an IC<SUB>50</SUB> of value of 15 µg/ml. Due to its potency, subsequent bioactivity-guided fractionation of the ethanol extract led to six aromatic compounds (<B>1-6</B>), which were identified as bavachinin (<B>1</B>), neobavaisoflavone (<B>2</B>), isobavachalcone (<B>3</B>), 4′-O-methylbavachalcone (<B>4</B>), psoralidin (<B>5</B>) and corylifol A (<B>6</B>). All isolated flavonoids (<B>1-6</B>) inhibited PLpro in a dose-dependent manner with IC<SUB>50</SUB> ranging between 4.2 and 38.4 µM. Lineweaver-Burk and Dixon plots and their secondary replots indicated that inhibitors (<B>1-6</B>) were mixed inhibitors of PLpro. The analysis of <I>K</I><SUB>I</SUB> and <I>K</I><SUB>IS</SUB> values proved that the two most promising compounds (<B>3</B> and <B>5</B>) had reversible mixed type I mechanisms.</P>
한국기업의 FDI 의사결정과 투자대상국의 지적재산권 보호에 대한 연구

본 연구는 국내 상장기업의 투자대상국의 지적재산권 보호 수준이 한국기업의 FDI 의사결정에 미치는 영향을 분석하고 이를 바탕으로 지적재산권과 관련한 이론적 정책적 시사점을 제공하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위하여 2001년에서 2004년 사이에 대하여 상장기업의 해외현지법인 자료를 이용하여 FDI 실시여부를 종속변수로 하는 probit 모형을 분석에 이용하였고 분석모형에 지적재산권 보호 지수의 제곱 항과 국가특성 및 모기업특성 변수를 포함시켰다. 분석결과를 보면, 전체 표본에 대한 분석에서 지적재산권 보호 지수와 FDI 발생 확률 사이에 비선형(U자형)의 관계가 있는 것으로 나타나고 있다. 따라서 투자대상국의 지적재산권 보호 수준이 일정한 수준에 도달하기 이전에는 보호 수준이 증가할수록 FDI를 실시할 확률이 감소하지만 그 수준을 지나고 나면 보호 수준 증가에 따라 FDI 실시 확률이 증가한다고 할 수 있다. 이는 일정한 보호 수준 이하의 낮은 지적재산권 보호를 제공하는 개도국에 대해서는 보호 강화에 따라 FDI가 감소하고 일정 수준 이상의 보호를 제공하는 선진국에 대해서는 FDI가 증가하는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 산업별 FDI에 대한 분석결과를 보면, 제조업의 FDI는 외국의 지적재산권 보호와 비선형의 관계를 갖지만 도소매업의 경우는 보호 수준에 큰 영향을 받지 않는 것으로 나타나서 지적재산권 보호는 제조업 FDI의 의사결정에 있어서 더 큰 영향을 주고 있음을 알 수 있었다. In this research, we want to examine the effects of foreign intellectual property rights(IPRs) protection on the foreign direct investment(FDI) decision of Korean listed firms. In empirical analysis, we have adopted probit model with the oversea subsidiaries data during 2001~2004, and included square term of IPRs index in model to check non-linearity. According to the results, first, there is nonlinear relationship(especially U-type) between foreign IPRs protection level and FDI decision of Korean firms. Therefore, strengthening of foreign IPRs protection results in decreasing of probability of FDI up to a certain protection level, but FDI can increase beyond this level. This relationship also means that the higher IPRs protection is, the more FDI in developed countries, but not so in developing countries. Second, the effect of foreign IPRs protection have varied with industries. Specially, there is more evident relationship in manufactures than in sales or distribution industry. From these results, we conclude that the effects of foreign IPRs protection differ with the host countries and industries, and these differences must be considered in Korea policy toward foreign IPRs.
