        NH₃가스 미량첨가 분위기에서의 CO-H₂혼합가스에 의한 과탄화철의 합성

        The synthesis process of iron carbide was proceeded in two stages of reduction of hematite fines by H₂ gas, and carburization of the reduced metal by CO-H₂ gas mixture at 600℃. The surface of reduced iron was pre-treated with an addition of 0.05 vol% NH₃-Ar before carburization. The synthesized iron carbides were comprehensively explored by C/S analyzer (Low C/S determinator), Mossbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy at various reaction times of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 min. By addition of a small amount of NH3 gas, the super iron carbides contained 10 wt% carbon were made, and such addition stabilized iron carbides. It was found that addition of NH3 gas played a major role in the formation of iron carbide without decomposition (Fe₃C→ 3Fe+C) of iron carbides and precipitation of free carbon. From these results, we succeed in synthesis of super iron carbide, Fe_(5)C₂, with a stable single phase without Fe and Fe₃C phases. (Received August 2, 2004)

      • 양식 넙치(Paralichthys olivaceus)에서 발생한 랩도바이러스성 질병의 병리조직학적 특징

        2000년 4월경부터 (수온7-13℃) 우리나라 동해안과 남해안 육상 수조에서 사육되던 넙치에서 체색흑화, 복수저류, 비장종대의 육안적 소견을 보이는 질병이 발생하여 대량폐사를 불러왔다. 병리조직학적 소견으로, 비장과 신장의 조혈조직에서 괴사병변이 주로 나타났다. 비장과 신장의 간질조직에서 괴사소가 관찰되었으며, 임파구, 괴사세포의 침윤이 나타났다. 비장 조직의 전자현미경적 관찰에서 변성혈구 내 세포질에서 탄환형의 바이러스 입자가 관찰되었는데 직경과 길이가 각각 약 50nm, 170nm였다. 이상의 결과로 본 질병은 rhabdovirus에 의한 질병으로 판단되었다. On April of 2000 and February of 2001, a disease characterized by darkening, ascites and enlargement of the spleen occurred in flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, farmed near northern and eastern coasts of Korea. Various degree of necrosis including liquefactive-type was observed mainly in hemopoietic tissue of spleen and kindney. Certain tissue such as branchial soft tissue including epithelium showed a similar necrotic findings. But some tissues such as intentine had several necrotic clusters of wandering cells, being possibly leukocytes. Necrotic evidences of blood cells were evident in various tissues including hemopoietic tissues. Necrobiotic bodies were frequently encountered in blood smear preparations. Bullet type-virious were detected in the spleenic cells. Each virion was about 500 nm in diameter and 170nm in length. From these results, this disease was thought to be a rhabdoviral disease.

        Nanocements produced from mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Biomedical cements are considered promising injectable materials for bone repair and regeneration. Calcium phosphate composition sized with tens of micrometers is currently one of the major powder forms. Here we report a unique cement form made from mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (BGn). The nanopowder could harden in reaction with aqueous solution at powder-to-liquid ratios as low as 0.4–0.5 (<I>vs</I>. 2.0–3.0 for conventional calcium phosphate cement CPC). The cementation mechanism investigated from TEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, and NMR analyses was demonstrated to be the ionic (Si and Ca) dissolution and then reprecipitation to form Si-Ca-(P) based amorphous nano-islands that could network the particles. The nanopowder-derived nanocement exhibited high surface area (78.7 m<SUP>2</SUP>/g); approximately 9 times higher than conventional CPC. The immersion of nanocement in simulated body fluid produced apatite nanocrystallites with ultrafine size of 10 nm (<I>vs.</I> 55 nm in CPC). The ultrafine nanocement adsorbed protein molecules (particularly positive charged proteins) at substantial levels; approximately 160 times higher than CPC. The nanocement released Si and Ca ions continuously over the test period of 2 weeks; the Si release was unique in nanocement whereas the Ca release was in a similar range to that observed in CPC. The release of ions significantly stimulated the responses of cells studied (rMSCs and HUVECs). The viability and osteogenesis of rMSCs were significantly enhanced by the nanocement ionic extracts. Furthermore, the <I>in vitro</I> tubular networking of HUVECs was improved by the nanocement ionic extracts. The <I>in vivo</I> neo-blood vessel formation in CAM model was significantly higher by the nanocement implant when compared with the CPC counterpart, implying the Si ion release might play a significant role in pro-angiogenesis. Furthermore, the early bone forming response of the nanocement, based on the implantation in a rat calvarial bone defect, demonstrated a sign of osteoinductivity along with excellent osteocondution and bone matrix formation. Although more studies remain to confirm the potential of nanocement, some of the intriguing physico-chemical properties and the biological responses reported herein support the promise of the new ‘nanopowder-based nanocement’ for hard tissue repair and regeneration.</P>

        Agastache rugosa Leaf Extract Inhibits the iNOS Expression in ROS 17/2.8 Cells Activated with TNF-α and IL-1β

        It has been suggested that nitric oxide (NO) derived from inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) may act as a mediator of cytokine-induced effects on bone turn-over. NO is also recognized as an important factor in bone remodeling, i.e., participating in osteoblast apoptosis in an arthritic joint. The components of Agastache rugosa are known to have many pharmacological activities. In the present study, we investigated the effects of Agastache rugosa leaf extract (ELAR) on NO production and the iNOS expression in ROS 17/2.8 cells activated by a mixture of inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α and IL-1β. A preincubation with ELAR significantly and concentration-dependently reduced the expression of iNOS protein in ROS 17/2.8 cells activated with the cytokine mixture. Consequently, the NO production was also significantly reduced by ELAR with an IC50 of 0.75 mg/mL. The inhibitory mechanism of iNOS induction by ELAR prevented the activation and translocation of NF-κB (p65) to the nucleus from the cytosol fraction. Furthermore, ELAR concentration-dependently reduced the cellular toxicity induced by sodium nitroprusside, an NO-donor. These results suggest that ELAR may be beneficial in NO-mediated inflammatory conditions such as osteoporosis.

        복합운동과 유산소운동이 뇌졸중 환자의 인지 및 기능적 수행능력에 미치는 영향

        The study was designed to examine the effect of combined training and aerobic training on cognitive function and functional performance(activities of daily living, lower-extremity strength, dynamic balance) in hemiplegic stroke patients. Twenty-five subjects volunteered to participate and were randomized into one of two groups. Twenty subjects completed the study, and the number of subjects in each group was as follows: combined exercise training group(CET: n=10), aerobic exercise training group(AET: n=10). subjects in CET performed stationary cycling(20 min) and resistance exercise(20 min) using Thera-band simultaneously, and subjects in AET performed only aerobic exercise utilizing the stationary bicycle(40 min). Both groups received a conventional physical therapy. in addition, CET and AET practiced exercise on sixty minutes a day, five days a week during six weeks. Results of the present study were as follows: CET and AET were effective at increasing cognition function, dynamic balance(p<.05). only CET was effective at increasing daily activity living(p<.05). daily activity living, dynamic balance of CET was more significantly increased than AET. In conclusion, CET and AET had positive effects on cognitive function and functional performance in hemiplegic patients. in addition, CET was more effective in enhancing daily activity living, dynamic balance than AET. Therefore, resistance exercise as well as aerobic exercise should be included in the treatment for hemiplegic patients later on.

      • Postoperative Radiation for Soft Tissue Sarcoma

        To evaluate the role of radiation and chemotherapy after limb-saving operation in the management of soft tissue sarcoma, the authors analysed retrospectively 33 patients treated in Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Radiation Therapy, Catholic University Medical College, in terms of survival rate, local recurrence and prognostic factors. The sex distribution was 16 males and 17 females. The age distribution ranged from 16 to 81 year old with mean age of 48. The follow-up period ranged from 1 year to 10 years with average of 5.5 years. The histologic diagnoses were 9 liposarcoma(27.2%), 8 MFH(24.2%), 7 unclassifiable(21.2%), 3 rhabdomyosarcoma(9.1%), and 3 fibrosarcoma(9.1%) in orders. While marginal and intralesional margins were gained in 24 patients(72.2%), wide and radical margins were obtained only in 9 patients(27.3%). On postoperative 3 weeks, local irradiation of 5000-7000 cGy was delivered to all patients by shrinking field technique for 5-8 weeks. Of 33 patients, 16(45.5%) patients were recieved adjuvant chemotherapy in combination of adriamycin, cyclophosphamide & vicristine, or VP16 & ifosfamide based on histologic type and obtained surgical margin. The survival rates at 2 years and 5 years were 58% and 37% respectively. Local recurrences occured in 15 patients(45.5%) at average 16 months after operation. In addition, the authors considered surgical margin, presence of local recurrence and tumor size as a significant prognostic factors.

      • A Simple Method for the Detection and Identification of Korean Brown Cattle(Hanwoo) using DHPLC

        Denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography(DHPLC) is used in a wide variety of genetic applications and is an efficient method for detection of mutations involving one or a few nucleotides. We developed a high-throughput DHPLC method for identifying polymorphisms in the MC1R gene that are characteristic of Hanwoo cattle. We compared 10 tissue samples from Hanwoo cattle, 10 samples from Holstein cattle and 10 samples from Hanwoox Holstein crossbred cattle to determine whether DHPLC analysis can be used to distinguish between these genotypes. Samples obtained from Hanwoo cattle had a unique profile of peaks that could be used as a molecular fingerprint for this breed. We also analyzed two hundred samples in a trial in which we were blinded to the genotype of the samples and correctly identified the breed-of-origin of 594 out of 600 sequence variations(99%).
